The abominations of the nations. Deuteronomy. 12 For all that do these things are an divide the coafts of thy land (which abomination unto the LORD: and be the LORD thy God giveth thee to inhe cafe of thefe abominations, the LoRrit) into three parts, that every flayer may flee thither.

4 And this is the cafe of the flayer which fhall fice thither, that he may live: Whofokilleth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time paft,

17 And the LORD faid unto me, They have well spoken that which they have Spoken.

18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth, and he fhall fpeak unto them all that 1 fhall command him.

19 And it fhall come to pass, that whofoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

20 But the prophet which hall pre-" fume to fpeak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that thall fpeak in the name of other gods, even that prophet fhall die.

21 And if thou fay in thine heart, How fhall we know the word which the LORD hath not froken?

22 When a prophet fpeaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follownot nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not fpoken, but the prophet hath spoken it prefumptuoufly: thou shalt not be afraid of him. CHAP. XIX.

Hen the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whofe land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou fucceedeft them, and dwelleft in their cities, and in their houses;

2 Thou fhalt feparate three cities for thee in the midft of thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to pofrefs it,

3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and

6 Left the avenger of the blood purfue the flayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and flay him, whereas he was not wor thy of death, in as much as he hated him not in time paft.

7 Wherefore I command thee, faying, Thou fhalt separate three cities for thee.

8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coaft (as he hath fworn unto thy fathers) and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fa thers;

9 (If thou fhalt keep all thefe commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways) then fhalt thou add three cities mo for thee, befide these three:

10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and fo blood be upon thee.

11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rife up against him, and smite him mortally, that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:

12 Then the elders of his city fhall fend and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

13 Thine eye fhall not pity him, but thou fhalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Ifrael, that it may go well with thee.

14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbours land-mark, which they of old time have, fet in thine inheritance which thou fhalt inherit, in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to poffefs it.

15 One witness shall not rife up againft a man for any iniquity, or for any fin, in any fin that he finneth : at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the

16 If a falfe witnefs rife up agianft any man to teftifie against him that which is wrong:

17 Then both the men between whom the controverfie is, fhall ftand before the LORD, before the priests, and the judges which fhall be in thofe days.

18 And the judges fhall make diligent inquifition: and behold, if the witnefs be a falfe witnefs, and hath teftified falfly against his brother:

19 Then fhall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: fo fhalt thou put the evil away from among you.

20 And thofe which remain fhall hear, and fear, and fhall henceforth commit no more any fuch evil among

Hen thou goeft out to battle against thine enemies, and feeft horfes and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 2 And it fhall be when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the prieft fhall approach, and speak unto the people,

3 And fhall fay unto them, Hear, O Ifrael, you approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them.

4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you againft your enemies, to fave you.

What cities must be destroyed. betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his houfe, left he die in battle, and another man take her.

8 And the officers fhall fpeak further unto the people, and they fhall fay, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his houfe, left his brethrens heart faint as well as his heart.

9 And it fhall be when the officers have made an end of fpeaking unto the people, that they fhall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

10 When thou comeft nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

11 And it shall be, if it make thee an fwer of peace, and open unto thee, then it fhall be that all the people that is found therein, fhall be tributaries unto thee, and they fhall ferve thee.

12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt befiege it.

13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou fhalt fmite every male thereof with the edge of the fword.

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the fpoil thereof, fhalt thou take unto thy felf: and thou fhalt eat the fpoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

15 Thus fhalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these na tions.

16 But of the cities of thefe people which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, chou fhalt fave alive nothing that breathech:

17 But thou shalt utterly deftroy them, namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebufites, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:

18 That they teach you not to do af5And the officers fhall fpeak unto ter all their abominations, which they the people, faying, What man is there have done unto their gods, fo fhould ye that hach built a new houfe, and hath fin against the LORD your God. not dedicated it? let him go and return 19 When thou fhalt befiege a city to his houfe, left he die in the battle, and a long time, in making war against it to another man dedicate it." take it, thou shalt not deftroy the trees thereof by forcing an ax against them: for thou mayft eat of them, and thou halt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is mans life) to employ them in the fiege.

6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of t? let him alle go and return unto his houfe, left he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.

CHA P. XXI.

The expiation of an uncertain murder, 15 The firft-born is not to be difinherited upon private affection. 18 A stubborn Son is to be ftoned to death.

F one be found flain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to poffefs it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath flain him:

2 Then thy elders and thy judges fhall come forth, and they fhall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is flain.

3 And it fhall be that the city which is next unto the flain man, even the elders of that city fhall take an heifer which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke.

4 And the elders of that city fhall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor fown, and fhall ftrike off the heifers neck there in the valley.

5. And the priests the fons of Levi shall come near, (for them the LORD thy God hath chofen to minifter unto him, and to blefs in the name of the LORD) and by their word fhall every controverfie and every ftroke be tried.

6 And all the elders of that city that are next unto the flain man, fhall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley.

7 And they fhall answer and fay, Our hands have not fhed this blood, neither have our eyes feen it.

8 Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Ifrael, whom thou haft redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Ifraels charge. And the blood Thall be forgiven them.

9 So fhalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou fhalt do that which is right in the fight of the LORD.

10 When thou goeft forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou haft taken them captive,

i And feeft among the captives a beautiful woman, and hafta defire unto her, that thou wouldst have her to thy wife:

12 Then thou shalt bring her home to

13 And the fhall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in chine houfe, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that, thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and the fhall be thy wife.

14 And it fhall be if thou have no delight in her, then thou falt let her go whither fhe will, but thou shalt not fell her at all for money, thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou haft humbled her.

15 If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firft-born fon be hers that was hated:

16 Then it shall be, when he maketh his fons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the fon of the beloved, firft-born, before the fon of the hated, which is indeed the firft-born:

17 But he fhall acknowledge the fon of the hated for the firft-born, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his ftrength, the right of the firft-born is his.

18 If a man have a ftubborn and rebellious fon, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that when they have chaftened him, will not hearken unto them:

19 Then fhall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place:

20 And they fhall fay unto the elders of his city, This our fon is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

21 And all the men of his city fhall ftone him with ftones, shat he die: fo fhalt thou put evil away from among you, and all Ifrael fhall hear, and fear.

22 And if a nian have committed a fin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:

23 His body fhall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou fhalt in any wild bury him that day (for he that is hangcd, is accurfed God) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

2 And if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, or if thou know him not, then thou fhalt bring it unto thine own houfe, and it fhall be with thee until thy brother feek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.

3 In like manner fhalt thou do with his afs, and fo fhalt thou do with his raiment,and with all loft things of thy brothers, which he hath loft, and thou haft found, fhalt thou do likewife: thou mayft not hide thy felf.

4 Thou shalt not fee thy brothers afs, or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thy felf from them: thou shalt fure-20 But if this thing be true, and the ly help him to lift them up again. tokens of virginity be not found for the damfel:

5 The woman, fhall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither fhall a man put on a womans garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God. silt no

6If a birds neft chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam fitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young.

7 But thou shalt in any wife let the dam go, and take the young to thee, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayft prolong zhy days.

8 When thou buildeft a new houfe, then thoufhalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine houfe, if any man fall from thence, 9Thou shalt not fow thy vineyard with divers feeds: left the fruit of thy feed which thou haft fown, and the fruit of thy vineyard be defiled.

23 If a damfel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her

24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall ftone them with ftones that they dies the damfel, because the cried not, being in the city, and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbours wife: fo thou shalt put away evil from among you.

25 But if a man find a betrodied damfel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her, fhall die

12 Thou shalt make thee fringes26 But unto the damfel chou shalt do upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou covereft thy felf 2. 13 If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her,

nothing, there is in the damfel no fin worthy of death for as when a man rifeth against his neighbour, and flayeth him, even fo this matter.

27 For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damfel cried, and there was none to fave her.

4. Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and be caufe they hired against thee Balaam the fon of Beor of Pethor of Mefopotamia, to curfe thee.

5 Nevertheless, the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam but the LORD thy God turned the curfe into a bleffing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

6 Thou shalt not feek their peace, nor their profperity all thy days for ever. 7Thoufhalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother: thou shalt not-abhor an Egyptian, because thou waft a tranger in his land.

18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog into the houfe of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God,

25 When thou comeft into the ftandco-ing-corn of thy neighbours, then thou mayft pluck the cars with thine hand : but thou shalt not move a fickle unto thy neighbours ftanding-corn.

11 But it fhall be when evening meth on, he fhall wash himself with water: and when the fun is down, he fhall come into the camp again.

12 Thou shalt have a place allo without the camp, whither thou fhalt go forth abroad.

13 And thou fhalt have a paddle upon thy weapon: and it fhall be when thou wilt cafe thy felf abroad, thou fhalt dig therewith, and fhalt turn back, and cower that which cometh from thee,
