CHAP. I

1 Why Titus was left in Crete, 6 Howminifters foould be qualified. 10 Of evil doers." PAUL Cervant of God, and an apostle of Jefus Chrift, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness:

But hath in due times manifefted his

word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

4 To Titus, mine own fon after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and the Lord Jefus Chrift our Saviour.

5 For this caufe left I thee in Crete, that thou fhouldeft fet in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

6 If any be blameless, the hufband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of riot, or unruly.

7 For a bishop muft be blamelefs, as the fteward of God; not felf-willed, not foon angry, not given to wine, no ftriker, not given to filthy lucre;

8 But a lover of hofpitality, a loverofgood men, fober, juit, holy, temperate;

9 Holding faft the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by found doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainfayers.

IO For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, fpécially they of the circumcifion

11 Whofe mouths must be ftopped, who ubvert whole houfes, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's fake.

12 One of themselves, even a prophet of heir own, faid, The Cretians are alway liars, vil beafts, flow bellies.

13 This witnefs is true. Wherefore rebuke them tharply, that they may be found in the aith;

14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the ruth.

2 That the aged men be fober, grave, tem. perate, found in faith, in charity, in patience.

3 The aged women likewife, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not falfe accufers, not given to much wine, teachersof good things;

4 That they may teach the young vomen to be fober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

To be difcreet, chatie, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own hufbands, that the word of God be not blafphemed.

6 Young men likewife exhort to be fober minded.

7 In all things fhewing thyfelfa pattern of good works: in doctrine bewing uncorrupt. nefs, gravity, fincerity,

8 Sound fpeech that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be athamed, having no evil thing to fay of you.

9 Exbort fervants to be obedient unto their own mafters, and to please them well in all things; not anfwering again:

10 Not purloining, but fhewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

11 For the grace of God that bringeth falvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodlinefs and worldly lufts, we fhould live foberly, righteously, and godly, in this prefent world;

13 Looking for that bleffed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jefus Chrift;

The Epiftle of PAUL the Apoftle to the HEBREWS.

CHAP. I.

1 Chrift, in thefe laft times coming to us from
the Father, 4 is preferred before angels,
both in perfon and office.
GD, who at funny times and in divers
manners fpake in time paft unto the fa-
thers by the prophets,

2 Hath in thefe last days fpoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom alfo he made the worlds;

3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the exprefs image of his perfon, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our fins, fat down on the right hand of the Majefty on high;

T 4 Being made fo much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

5 For unto which of the angels faid he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

6 And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he faith, And let all the angels of God worthip him.

7 And of the angels he faith, Who maketh his angels fpirits, and his miniiters a flame of fire.

8 But unto the Son, he faith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a fceptre of righteoufnefs is the fceptre of thy Kingdom. 9 Thou hart loved righteoufnefs, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladnefs above thy fellows.

to And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning haft laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the works of thine hands.

11 They fhall perish; but thou remaineft: and they all thall wax old as doth a garment, 12 And as a vesture fhalt thou fold them up, d they fhall be changed: but thou art the ame, and thy years thall not fail.

13 But to which of the angels faid he at ny time, sit on my right hand, until I make hine enemies thy footitool?

14 Are they not all miniftering spirits, fent orth to miniiter for them who ihall be heirs of falvation?

CHA P. II.

We ought to be obedient unto Chrift Fefus, s and that because he vouchsafed to take our nature upon him.

Herefore ought to

more

ing, What is man, that thou art mindful of hin? or the fon of man, that thou visitest him?

7 Thou madeft him a little lower than the

angels; thou crownedit him with glory and honour, and didft fet him over the works of thy hands:

8Thou haft put all things in fubjection un der his feet. For in that he put all in fubjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we fee not yet all things put under him.

9 But we fee Jefus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the futtering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God thould tatte death for every man.

10 For it became him, tor whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bring ing many fons unto glory, to make the captain of their falvation perfect through fufferings.

11 For both he that fanctifieth and they who are fanctified are all of one: for which cafe he is not ashamed to call them bre thren,

12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I fing praise unto thee.

13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold 1 and the children which God hath given me.

14 For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he alfo himself likewife took part of the fame; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime fubject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the feed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the fins of the people.

18 For, in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to fuccour them that are tempted.

CHA P. III.

Chrift is more worthy than Mofes : 7 therefore if we believe not in him, we fail be more worthy of punishment than bardbearted Ifrael.

I earnest heed to the things which we Herefore, holy brethren, partakers of

ave heard, left at any time we should let sem lip.

10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and faid, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. 11 So I fware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my reft.)

12 Take heed, brethren, left there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To-day; left any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of fin.

14 For we are made partakers of Chrift, if we hold the beginning of our confidence Bedrant unto the end;

15 While it is faid, To-day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

16 For fome, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit, not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

By But with whom was he grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had finned, whofe carcaffes fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom fware he that they should not enter into his reft, but to them that belleved not?

19 So we fee that they could not enter in becaufe of unbelief.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as
well as unto them: but the word preached
did not profit them, not being mixed with
faith in them that heard it

3 For we which have believed do enter into reit, as he faid, As I have fworn in my wrath, if they fhall enter into my reft; although the works were finished from the foundation of the world

4 For he fpake in a certain place of the feventh day on this wife, And God did reft the Seventh day from all his works.

5 And in this place again, If they fhall enter into my reft.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that fome muft enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief.

7(Again, he limiteth a certain day, faying in David, To-day, after fo long a time; as it is faid, To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if Jefus had given them reft,then would he not afterward have fpoken of another day. 9 There remaineth therefore a reft to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his reft, he alfo hath ceafed from his own works, as God did from his.)

Danger of apoftaly.

CHAP. VI.

Chap. vi, vil.

He exhorteth not to fall back from the faith, 11 but to be fieadfaft, 12 diligent and patient to wait upon God.

Herefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Chrift, let us go on unto perfecion; not laying again the foundation of reentance from dead works, and of faith to vard God,

2 Of the doctrine of baptifms, and of layng cn of hands, and of refurrection of the Head, and of eternal judgment.

3 And this will we do, if God permit.

4 For it is imposible for those who were once enlightened, and have tafted of the heaenly gift, and were made partakers of the Moly Ghott,

5 And have tafted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6 If they thall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; feeing they crucify o themfelves the Son of God afreth, and put bim to an open shame.

7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dreffed, receiveth bletfing from God:

8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto curting; whole end is to be burned.

9 But, beloved, we are perfuaded better things of you, and things that accompany falvation, though we thus fpeak.

10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have thewed towards his name, in that ye have ministered to the faints, and do minitter.

II And we defire that every one of you do thew the fame diligence to the full affurance of hope unto the end:

12 That ye be not flothful, but wollowers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could fwear by no greater, he fware by himself.

14 Saying, Surely bleffing I will blefs thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

15 And fo, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16 For men verily fwear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to thew unto the heirs of promife the immutability of his counfel, confirmed it by an oath; 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impoffible for God to lie, we might have a ftrong confolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope fet before us.

ty Which hope we have as an anchor of the foul, both fure and steadfaft, and which entereth into that within the veil :

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jefus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec.

[blocks in formation]

Melchifedec and Chriff. part of all; firft being by interpretation King of righteoufnefs, and after that alfo King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

3 Without father, without mother, with out defcent, haying neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

4 Now confider how great this man was unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the fpoils.

5 And verily they that are of the fons of Levi, who receive the office of the priefthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

6 But he whofe defcent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promifes.

7 And without all contradiction the lefs is bleffed of the better.

8 And here men that die receive tithes but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witneffed that he liveth.

9 And as I may fo fay, Levi alfo, who re ceiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchifedee met him.

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,)what further need was there that another prieft fhould rife after the order of Melchifedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of neceffity a change alfo of the law.

13 For he of whom thefe things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

14 For it is evident that our Lord fprang out of Juda; of which tribe Mofes ipake nothing concerning priesthood.

15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the fimilitude of Melchifedec there arif. eth another prieft,

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec.

18 For there is verily a difannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

20 And in as much as not without an oath · he was made priest:

21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that faid unto him,The Lord fware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec;)

22 By fo much was Jefus made a furety of a better teftament.

23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not futtered to continue by reafon of death:

24 But this man because he continuethever hath an unchangeable priesthood.

25 Wherefore he is able alfo to fave them to the uttermoft that come unto God by him, (eeing he ever liveth to make intercettion for them.

26 For fuch an high grieft became us, zuha
