JEREMIAH. refused to be comforted for her children, becaufe they were not.

16 Thus faith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work fhall be rewarded, faith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

17 And there is hope in thine end, faith the Lo, that thy children shall come again to their own border.

18 I have furely heard Ephraim be. moaning himself thus; Thou hait chaftifed me, and I was chaftifed, as a bullock unaccuftomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I fhall he turned; for thou art the LORD my God.

19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was inftructed, I fmote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

20 Is Ephraim my dear fon? Is he a pleafant child! For fince I fpake against him I do earnestly remember him till: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will furely have mercy upon him, faith

the LORD.

21 Set thee up waymarks, make thee high heaps: fet thine heart toward the highway, even the way which thou went eit: turn again, O virgin of Ifrael, turn a gain to these thy cities.

22 How long wilt thou go about, O thou backfliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compafs a man.

23 Thus faith the LORD of hosts, the God of Ifrael; As yet they shall use this fpeech in the land of Judah and in the cities thereof, when I shall bring again their captivity, The LORD bless thee, O habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.

24 And there fhall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities thereof together, huf bandmen, and they that go forth with flocks. 25 For I have fatiated the weary foul, and I have replenished every forrowful foul.

26 Upon this I awaked, and beheld; my fleep was fweet unto me.

and

27 Behold, the days come, faith the Logp, that I will fow the houfe of Ifrael and the houfe of Judan with the feed of man, and with the feed of beat.

28 And it shall come to pafs, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to deftroy, and to afflict; fo will i watch over them, to build, and to plant, faith the LORD.

20 In thofe days they fhall fay no more, The fathers have eaten a four grape, and the children's teeth are fet on edge.

30 But every one thall die for his own ini. quity every man that eateth the four grape, his teeth thall be fet on edge.

31 Behold, the days come, faith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the houfe of Ifrael, and with the house of Judah : 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that 1 took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, faith the Lopo:

33 But this shall be the covenant that I will

Jeremiah's imprisonment. make with the house of Ifrael; After those days, faith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, faying, Know the LORD for they shall ali know me from the leaft of them unto the greatest of them, faith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their fin no more.

35 Thus faith the LORD, which giveth the fun for a light by day, and the ordinan ces of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the fea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hos is his name:

36 If thofe ordinances depart from before me, faith the LORD, then the feed of Ifrael alfo fhall ceafe from being a nation before me for ever.

37 Thus faith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth fearched out beneath, I will also catt off all the feed of Ifrael for all that they have done, faith the LORD.

38 Behold, the days come, faith the Logp. that the city thall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.

39 And the measuring line thall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb, and thall compafs about to Goath.

40 And the whole valley of the dead be dies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horfe gate toward the eaft, bull be holy un. to the LORD; it thall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.

CHAP. XXXII.

1 Jeremiah's imprisonment: 16 his complaint to God. 26 The captivity confirmed." 36 4 promife of a gracious return.

THE word that came to Jeremiah from

the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.

2 For then the king of Babylon's army be fieged Jerufalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was thut up in the court of the prifon, which was in the king of Judah's house.

3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, faying, Wherefore doit thou prophely, and fay, Thus faith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;

4 And Zedekiah king of Judah fhall not efcape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but thall furely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and thall fpeak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes thall behold his eyes;

3 And he hall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I vifit him, faith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye thall not profper?

6 And Jeremiah faid, The word of the LORD came unto me, faying,

7 Behold, Hanameel the fon of Shallum thine uncle fhall come unto thee, faying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it..

8 So Hanamce! inine uncle's fon came to me in the court of the prifon, according

the word of the LORD, and faid unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyfelf. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD.

9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle's fon, that was in Anathoth, and weigh ed him the money, even seventeen hekels of filver.

10 And Ifubfcribed the evidence, and fealed it, and took witneffes, and weighed him the money in the balances.

II So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was fealed according to the law and curtom, and that which was open.

12 And I gave the evidence of the purchafe unto Baruch the fon of Neriah, the fon of Maafeiah, in the fight of Hanameel mine uncle's for, and in the prefence of the witneffes that fubfcribed the book of the purchafe, before all the Jews that fat in the court of the prifon.

13¶ And 1 charged Baruch before them, faying,

14 Thus faith the LORD of hosts, the God of Ifrael; Take thefe evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is fealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen veffel, that they may continue many days.

15 For thus faith the LORD of hosts, the God of Ifrael; Houfes and fields and vineyards fhall be poffeffea again in this land.

16¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the fon of Neriah, I prayed unto the LORD, faying,

17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou haft made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

18 Thou thewest loving kindness unto thoufands, and recompenfeft the iniquity of the fathers into the bofom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hofts, is his name,

19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the fons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

20 Which haft fet figns and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in If rael, and among other men; and haft made thee a name, as at this day;

21 And haft brought forth thy people Ifrael out of the land of Egypt with figns, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with aftretched out arm, and with great terror; 22 And haft given them this land, which thou didft (wear to their fathers to give them, a land flowing with milk and honey:

23 And they came in, and poffeffed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedit them to do: therefore thou haft caufed all this evil to come upon them:

24 Behold the mounts, they are come unto she city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans that fight against it, because of the fword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hatt spoken is come to pafs; and, behold, thou leeft it.

Y

His prayer in prifon.

25 And thou haft faid unto me, O Lord GoD, Buy thee the field for money, and take witneles; for the city is given into the hand of: he Chaldeans.

26 Then came the word of the LG D un o Jeremiah, faying,

27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

28 Therefore thus faith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he thall take it.

29 And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, hall come and fet fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whole roofs they have offered incenfe unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.

30 For the children of Ifrael and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Ifrael have only provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, faith the LORD.

31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,

32 Because of all the evil of the children of Ifrael and of the children of Judah, which they have done to proveke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerufalem.

33 And they have turned unto me the back and not the face though I taught them, ri fing up early and teaching them, yet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.

34 But they fet their abominations in the houfe, which is called by my name, to de file it.

35 And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the fon of Hinnom, to caufe their fons and their daughters to pafs through the fire unto Molech; which I com. manded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination to caufe Judah to fin.

36 And now therefore thus faith the LORD, the God of Ifrael, concerning this city, whereof ye fay, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, by the fword, and by the famine, and by the peftilence;

37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell fafely:

38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:

39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:

40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not d part from me.

41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do the n good, and I will plant them in this land affuredly with my whole heart, and with my whole foul.

42 For thus faith the LORD; Like as I have

i

God's promise to his people.

JEREMIAH. brought all this great evil upon this people, fo will I bring upon them all the good that I have promifed them.

43 And fields fhall be bought in this land, whereof ye lay, It is defolate without man or beaft; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

44 Men fhall buy fields for money, and subfcribe evidences, and feal them, and take wit neffes in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerufalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and In the cities or the valley, and in the cities of the fouth; for I will caufe their captivity to return, faith the LORD.

Morreremiah the fecond time, while he was yer thut up in the court of the prifon, faying,

Oreover the word of the LORD came

2 Thus faith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name.

3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and thew thee great and mighty things, which thou knoweit not.

4 For thus faith the LORD, the God of Ifrael, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the fword;

s They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have flain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whofe wickedness I have hid my face from this city.

6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.

7 And I will caufe the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Ifrael to return, and will build them as at the first.

8 And I will cleanfe them from all their iniquity, whereby they have finned against me; ard I will pardon all their iniquities, where. by they have finned, and whereby they have tranfgreffed against me.

9 And it shall be to me a name of joy, 2 praife and an honour before all the na. tions of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they fhall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the profperity that I procure unto it.

10 Thus faith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye fay shall be defolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerufalem, that are defolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,

The Branch of righteousness.

13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the fouth, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerufalem, and in the ci ties of Judah, thall the Hocks pafs again un. der the hands of him that telleth them, faith the LORD.

14 Behold, the days come, faith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which i have promifed unto the house of Ifrael and to the oufe of Judah.

15 In those days, and at that time, will I caufe the Branch of righteoufnefs to grow up unto David; and he thall execute judg ment and righteoufnefs in the land.

16 In thofe days fhall Judah be faved, and Jerufalem thall dwell fafely and this is the name wherewith the fhall be called, The LORD our righteoufnefs.

17 For thus faith the LORD; David shall never want a man to fit upon the throne of the house or Ifrael;

18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offer ings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do facrifice continually.

19 And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, faying,

20 Thus faith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their feafon;

21 Then may alfo my covenant be broken with David my fervant, that he should not have a fon to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

22 As the hoft of heaven cannot be num, bered, neither the fand of the fea measured: fo will I multiply the feed of David my fer vant, and the Levites that minifter unto me.

23 Moreover the word of the LORD camg to Jeremiah, faying,

24 Confidereit thou not what this people have spoken, faying, The two families which the LORD hath chofen, he hath even caft them off? Thus they have despised my peo ple, that they should be no more a nation before them.

25 Thus faith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;

26 Then will I caft away the feed of Ja cob, and David my fervant, fo that I will not take any of his feed to be rulers over the feed of Abraham, Maac, and Jacob: for I will caufe their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

Jeremiah prophefieth

Chap. xxxv. his hand; and thine eyes fhall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he fhall fpeak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou fhalt go to Babylon.

4 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus faith the LORD of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword:

5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, fo fhall they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, Jaying, Ah lord? for I have pronounced the word, faith the LORD.

6 Then Jeremiah the prophet fpake all thefe words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerufalem,

7 When the king of Babylon's army fought againt Jerufalem, and againft all the cities of Judah that were left, againit Lachith, and against Azekah: for thefe defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.

8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the peo ple which were at Jerufalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;

That every man should let his manfer

vant, and every man his maidfervant, being au Hebrew or an Hebrewefs, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.

10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one thould let his manfer vant, and every one his maidfervant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.

II But afterward they turned, and caufed the fervants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into fubjection for fervants and for hand. maids.

12 Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

13 Thus faith the LORD, the God of Ifrael; I made ovenant with your fathers in the day tha brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, faying,

14 At the end of feven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been fold unto thee; and when he hath ferved thee fix years, thou shalt let him go tree from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear

15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my fight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant, before me in the house which is called by my name:

16 But ye turned, and polluted my name, and caufed every man his fervant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had fet at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into fubjection, to be unto you for fervants and for handmaids.

17 Therefore thus faith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, faith the LORD, to the fword, to the peftilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the king. doms of the earth.

18 And I will give the men that have

the captivity of Zedekiah. tranfgreffed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and paffed between the parts thereof,

19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerufalem, the eunuchs, and the pries, and all the people or the land, which paired between the parts of the calf;

20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that feek their life: and their dead bodies thall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beafts of the earth.

21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that feek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.

22 Behold, I will command, faith the LORD, and cause them to return to this city; and they thall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a defolation without an inhabitant.

CHAP. XXXV.

1 By be obedience of the Rechabites 12 the
the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim the
Jews' disobedience is condemned.
HE word which came to Jeremiah from

fon of Jofiah king of Judah, faying,

2 Go unto the houfe of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the houfe of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

3 Then I took Jaazaniah the fon of Jere. miah, the fon of Habaziniah, and his bre thren, and all his fons, and the whole houfe of the Rechabites;

4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the fons of Hanan, the fon of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maafeiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:

5 And I fet before the fons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I faid unto them, Drink ye wine.

6 But they faid, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the fon of Rechab our father commanded us, faying, Ye thall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your fons for ever: 7 Neither hall ye build houfe, nor fow feed, nor plant vineyard, nor have a but all your days ye thall dwell in ter, that ye may live many days in the land where ye be frangers.

8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the fon of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, cur fons, nor our daughters;

9 Nor to build houfes for us to dwell in? neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor feed: 10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jo nadab our father commanded us.

11 But it came to pass, when Nebuchad rezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we faid, Come, and let us go to Jerufalem for fear of the army of the Chal deans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: fo we dwell at Jerufalem.

Iz Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, faying,

of Ifrael; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerufalem, Will ye not receive inftruction to hearken to my words faith the LORD.

14 The words of Jonadab the fon of Rechab, that he commanded his fons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father's commandment notwithstanding I have spo ken unto you, rifing early and fpeaking: but ye hearkened not unto me.

15 I have fent alfo unto you all my fervants the prophets, rifing up carly and fending them, faying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to ferve them, and ye hall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.

16 Because the fons of Jonadab the fon of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me: 17 Therefore thus faith the LORD God of hots, the God of Ifrael; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerufalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have Ipoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.

18 And Jeremiah faid unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus faith the LORD of hots, the God of Ifrael; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:

19 Therefore thus faith the LORD of hofts the God of Ifrael: Jonadab the fon of Rechab fhall not wana man to ftand before me for ever.

CHAP. XXXVI.

1 Baruch writeth Jeremiah's prophecy. 20 Jehoiakim burneth the roll, &c.

A ND it came to pafs in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the fon of Jonah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, faying,

2 Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have fpcken unto thee against Ifrael, and againft Judah, and again! 1 the nations, from the day Ifpake unto e, from the days of Jofiah, even unto this day.

3 It may be that the houfe of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their fin.

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the fon of Neriah and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had fpoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.

5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, fayiog, I am thut up; I cannot go into the houfe of the LORD:

6 Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou haft written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house upon the fafting day: and alfo thou shalt read them in the cars of all Judah that come out of their cities.

It may be they will present their fuppli

Jeremiah's prophecy.

cation before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced againft this people.

8 And Baruch the fon of Neriah did a cording to all that Jeremiah the prophet com manded him, reading in the book the word of the LORD in the LORD's house.

9 And it came to país in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the fon of Jofiah king of Judah, In the ninth month, that they proclaimeda faft before the LORD to all the people in je rufalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerufalem.

10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of jeremiah in the houfe of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the fon of Shaphan the fcribe in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD's houfe, in the ears of all the people.

11 When Michaiah the fon of Gemariah, the fan of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD.

12 Then he went down into the king's house into the fcribe's chamber, and io, all the prin ces fat there, even Elishama the fcribe, and Delaiah the fon of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the fon of Achbor, and Gemariah the fon of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the fon of Hananiah, and all the princes.

13 Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.

14 Therefore all the princes fent Jehudi the fon of Nethaniah, the fon of shelemiah, the fon of Cufhi, unto Baruch, faying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou haft read in the ears of the people, and come. So Ba ruch the fon of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.

15 And they faid unto him, Sit down now and read it in our ears, So Baruch read itia

their ears.

16 Now it came to pafs, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid, both one and other, and faid Baruch, We will furely tell the king of all thefe words.

17 And they asked Baruch, faying, Tell us now, How didft thou write all thefe words at his mouth?

18 Then Baruch answered them, He prenounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.

19 Then faid the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be.

20. And they went in to the king inte the court, but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elihama the fcribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.

21 So the king fent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama th fcribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in th ears of the king, and in the ears of all th princes which flood befide the king.

22 Now the king fat in the winterhou in the ninth month: and there was a fire o the hearth burning before him.

23 And it came to pafs, that when Jehu had read three or four leaves, he cut it wit the penknife, and caft it into the fire th was on the hearth, until all the roll was co fumed in the fire that was on the hearth. 24 Yet they were not afraid, nor rent th
