CHAP. VIII.

The religious manner of reading and hearing the law.

AND all the people gathered themselves to gether as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they fpake unto Ezra the fcribe to bring the book of the law of Mofes, which the LORD had commanded to israel.

2 And Fzra the priest brought the law be fore the congregation both of men and wo. men, and all that could hear with underftanding, upon the first day of the feventh

month.

3 And he read therein before the #treet that was before the water gate; from the murning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

4 And Ezra the fcribe food upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpole; and befide him flood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maafeiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mithael, and Malchiah, and Hathum, and Hathbadana, Zechariah, and Methullam.

5 And Ezra opened the book in the fight

reading and bearing the law,

tha, and Ezra the priest the fcribe, and th Levites that taught the people, faid unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

10 Then he faid unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the fweet, and fend por tions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LOKD: neither be ye forry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

11 So the Levites filled all the people, fay. ing, Hoid your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved.

12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to fend portions, and to make great mirth, because they had under. tood the words that were declared unto them.

13 And on the fecond day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests and the Levites, unto Ezra the fcribe, even to underftand the words of the law.

14 And they found written in the law, which the LORD had commanded by Mofes, that the children of Ifrael fhould dwell in booths in the fcaft of the feventh month:

15 And that they thould publish and pro claim in all their cities, and in Jerufalem,

faying, Go forth into the mount, and tech olive branches, and pine branches, and myr. tle branches, and palm branches, and branch. es of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his houfe, and in their courts, and in the courts of the houfe of God, and in the street of the water gate, and the street of the gate of Ephraim.

17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and fat under the booths; for fince the days of Jefhua the fon of Nun unto that day had not the children of Ifrael done fo. And there was very great gladnefs.

18 Alfo day by day, from the first day unto the laft day, he read in the book of the law of God: and they kept the feaft feven days, and on the eighth day was a folemn affembly, ac. cording unto the manner.

Chap. Ix. 5 Then the Levites, Jeshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hathabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebani ah, and Pethahiah, faid, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and bleffed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all bleffing and praife.

So didit thou get thee a name, is this day.

II And thou didst divide the fea before them, fo that they went through the midst of the fea on the dry land: and their perfecutors thou threweft into the deeps, as a ftone into the mighty waters.

12 Moreover, thou leddeft them in the day by a cloudy pillar, and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go.

13 Thou cameft down alfo upen mount Sinai, and pakett with them from heaven, and gaveit them right judgments, and true laws, good ftatutes and commandments:

14 And madeft known unto them thy holy fahbath, and commanded them precepts, ftatutes, and laws, by the hand of Moles thy fervant:

17 And refufed to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, flow to anger, and of great kindness, and forfooket them not.

18 Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and faid, This is thy god that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;

19 Yet thou, in thy manifold merries, forfookeft them not in the wilderne the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to thew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

21 Yea, forty years didft thou fuftain them in the wilderness, fo that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet fwelled not.

22 Moreover, thou gaveft them kingdoms and nations, and didit divide them into corners: fo they poffeffed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bathan.

23 Their children alfo multiplied thou as the ftars of heaven, and broughteft them into the land, concerning which thou hadft promifed to their fathers, that they thould go in to poffefs it.

24 So the children went in and poffeffed the land, and thou fubduedft before them the inha bitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gaven them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

25 And they took trong cities, and a fat Tand, and poffeffed houfes full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees ja abundances fo they did eat and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themfelves in thy great goodness.

26 Nevertheless, they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and flew thy prophets, which teflified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.

27 Therefore thou deliveredft them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them; and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardeft them from heaven; and according to thy masifold mercies thou gaveft them faviours, who faved them out of the hand of their enemies.

28 But after they had reft, they did evil again before thee: therefore lefteft thou them in the hand of their enemies, fo that they hat the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardett them from heaven, and many times did thou deliver them, according to thy mercies;

29 And teftifiedft against them that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law; yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto jugommandments, but finned against the (which if a man do, he thall live in then,) and withdrew the shoulder, und hard. ened their neck, and would not heir:

30 Yet many years didft thon forbear them, and teftifiedit against them by thy Spirit in thy prophets; yet would they not give ear: there. fore gaveit thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.

31 Nevertheless, for thy great mercies'fake thou didit not utterly confume them, nor forfake them; for thou art a gracious and merci. ful God.

32 Now therefore, our God, the great. the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepett Covenant and mercy, let not all the trou ble feem little before thee that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priefts, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, fince the time of the kings of Affyria unto this day.
