IBOTSON AND PALMER, PRINTERS, SAVOY STREET, STRAND.

TO THE RIGHT REVEREND,

CHARLES RICHARD,

LORD BISHOP OF WINCHESTER.

MY LORD,

THERE are two reasons which have influenced me to request your Lordship's permission to preface this volume with a Dedication to you. First, because I have the satisfaction of serving a chapel within your Lordship's jurisdiction; and, secondly, because I trust there is nothing in the doctrines endeavoured to be enforced in the following Discourses, at variance with the views of scriptural truth, which a bishop of our church may be expected to entertain.

I speak, my Lord, in an especial manner, of those vital doctrines of the Christian scheme, which have been the support of sinners in all ages; which have cheered the martyr at the stake, and sustained the dying Christian upon his bed in the extremity of human suffering.

With respect to your Lordship personally, I am satisfied that I shall best consult your wishes by merely expressing my earnest hope, that the providence of God may watch over your steps, and strengthen your hands, and lead you forand that he will

so lengthen your days, that you may preside, for very many years, as a faithful shepherd over the extensive and most important diocese of Winchester.

I am, my Lord, with great respect, your Lordship's most faithful servant,

London, May 1, 1830.

F. G. CROSSMAN.

PREFACE.

THE only apology I think it necessary to offer for bringing this course of Sermons before the public, is the importance of the subjects which they profess to examine. They are published, with only a few verbal alterations, as they were preached; and on this ground, it may be fairly presumed, that they will obtain a larger share of consideration amongst those who heard them, than many Discourses of a superior character, which have not the same local circumstances to recommend them; and on the

supposition that they may be read by many of that congregation, for whose benefit they were written, I have chosen to retain the familiar mode of address which I customarily adopt in the pulpit.
