LETTER FROM A GODMOTHER. MY DEAR LITTLE GODCHILD_Though

ber you very well, and love you very much; and if you will ask your dear mama, she will tell you why I call yon my godchild. Mama will tell you, that when you were a little baby, I made a great many promises for you to God. God has promised to make you his own good, happy little child ; and after you have done all I promised you should do to please him, he will take you to live with him for ever in his nice place, called hea. ven. God sent his own dear son Jesus Christ down to this world, on purpose to invite you and many other children, and old people too, to come and live with him in heaven, as soon as every thing is ready. Now Jesus Christ had a great deal of trouble and pain

before he died ; but he loved you so well, he did not mind his pain, so he could only make you happy, and get you for God's own dear child. Jesus Christ is now gone back again to heaven, to make all ready for you. Ask mama to tell you all the pain and sorrow he had before he went. Now papa and mama, and your godfathers and godmothers, are to help together tn get you ready, to go and live with this kind Saviour.

How do you think we are to get you ready? By teaching you how you are to become a good little child, such an one as Jesus will love and like to bring to God to live with him for ever. I do not know when I shall see you again, but I remember you very well, when you were a pretty baby in my arms at church; and when I prayed to God to make you his own child ; and I pray too now, very osten, though we are so far off from each other. All God's children have new hearts; they love God, and do as their papa, and mama, and nurses bid them. All God's chil. dren are kind to their brothers and sisters they love to hear God's book read, which tells them about their best friend, Jesus, and heaven. I should be so glad to hear that you are like one of God's children ; and though you are such a tiny body you cannot write yet, I wish you would ask mama to write and tell godmama, what you think about these things. If mama will write to me what you tell her, and say you liked to hear my letter read to you, I will write again. So good bye, my little darling, and believe me Your affectionate, praying Godmother.

DAVID AND GOLIATH. There is something very delightful in a winter's evening spent in the bosom of an affectionate family.

When the curtains were let down, and a cheerful fire enlivened the party, Mr. S said to his beloved children; “ Come now, my dears, and let us talk a little about David and Goliath."

Each of the children drew nearer to their dear papa with great delight.

“David was a shepherd,” said Mr. S “and we are indebted to thisruraloccupation, for many beautiful descriptions, in the Psalms, of the pastoral life.”

“ Jesus,” said Edward, “ calls himself the good Shepherd, and believers his sheep; does he not papa ?"

"He does, my dear; and may we all be ever found among the sheep of his pasture !”

“You know what enemies the Philistines were to the children of Israel ?”

“Yes, papa," said Emma; “ there was a frightful giant, who dared to defy the armies

of Israel. Oh ! how terrified I should have been to have seen him."

“ Young David,” replied Mr. S-,“being sent by his aged father to enquire after his brethren, arrived just as the host was going forth to fight, and shouted for the battle. Whilst he was talking with his brethren, behold there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name. At the sight of him all the men of Israel fled and were sore afraid. No wonder then, if my Emma would have been terrified. Great promises were made hy Saul to the man who should hwe courage to fight with and kill the giant. But where was this bold soldier to be found ? David, though but a youth, listened to the proposal. His heart began to glow with holy zeal for God, and to burn with desire to rescue his nation from their distress. His brother Eliah was very angry, and unkindly said ; 'why camest thou down hither ? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness ? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down, that thou mightest see the battle.' David with much simplicity answered ; 'what have I now done? Is there not a cause ?' When Saul heard of David's enquiries, he sent for him. And David said to Sanl; 'let no man's heart fail

because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. Saul said to David, thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him ; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.' And David said unto Saul; thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock; and I went out after him, and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and smote him and slew him. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them; and the Lord will deliver me out of his hand, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.' Saul said unto David; "go- and the Lord be with thee.'

“Wbat could move David," said Charles, to runsuch a risk of losing his life ?"

" It was God, who, in infinite mercy, filled the heart of David with faith and courage. He designed David to be the king of Israel, and this great event paved the way to his future advancement.' David took five smooth stones out of the brook, which he put into his shepherd's bag; and with his staff and sling, he drew near the Philistine. The proud giant was quite enraged, when he saw a ruddy youth approach to combat him. He said unto David ; 'am I a dog, that thou Gomest to me with staves ?' And the Phi.
