37 with her suburbs, °Kedemoth with her

suburbs, and Mephaath with her sub38 urbs ; four cities. °And out of the

tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, 'thel city of refuge for

the 'manslayer', and Mahanaim with 39 her suburbs ; °Heshbon with her sub

urbs, Jazer with her suburbs ; four (10 cities in all. All these were the

cities lof the children of Merari laccording to their families, leven the resti of the families of the Levites;

land! their lot iwas' twelve cities. 11 All the cities of the Levites lin the

midst of the possession of the chil

dren of Israel were forty and eight 42 cities with their suburbs. "These

cities were every one with their suburbs round about them : thus lit was

with all these cities. 13 Sol the LORD gave unto Israel all

the land which he sware to give unto

their fathers; and they possessed it, 44 and dwelt therein. "And the LORD

gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers : and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the

LORD delivered all their enemies into 45 their hand. "There failed not aught

of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel :

all came to pass. 22 1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites,

and the Gadites, and the half tribe of 2 Manasseh, °and said unto them, Ye

have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and

have 'hearkened unto my voice in all 3 that I commanded you : °ye have not

left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge

of the commandment of the Lord (1 your God. And now the LORD your

God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he ispake unto! them : therefore now "turn' ye, and get 'you' unto your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of

the Lord gave you 'beyond' Jordan. 5 Only: take diligent heed to do the

commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord Icommanded' you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your

6 soul. So Joshua blessed them, and

sent them away: and they went unto their tents.

Now to the one half tribe of Manasseh Moses had given linheritance! in Bashan : but unto the other half gave Joshua among their brethren

beyond! Jordan westward. Moreoveri when Joshua sent them away

unto their tents, he blessed them, (8 °and spake unto them, saying, Return

with much 'wealth unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment: divide the spoil of your enemies

with your brethren. 9 And the children of Reuben and the

children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, accord

ing to the commandment of the * 10 Lord by the hand of Moses. And

when they came unto the region about' Jordan, that list in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe

of Manasseh built there an altar by 11 Jordan, a great altar to see to. "And

the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about' Jordan, 'on the side

that pertaineth to the children of 12) Israel. And when the children of

Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh,

to go up against them to war. 13 And the children of Israel sent unto

the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead,

Phinehas the son of Eleazar the 14) priest; °and with him ten princes,

ione prince of a fathers' house 'for each of the tribes of Israel ; and Ithey were every: one of them

head of their fathers' houses' among 15 the thousands of Israel. And they

came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the

land of Gilead, and they spake with 16 them, saying, "Thus saith the whole

congregation of the Lord, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that ye have builded you

an altar, toi rebel this day against 17 the LORD ? 'Is the iniquity of Peor

too little for us, from which we have! not cleansed lourselves unto' this day,

although there 'camel a plague "upon (18 the congregation of the Lord, Othat

ye must turn away this day from following the Lord? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to-day against the LORD, that to-morrow he will be wroth with

the whole congregation of Israel. 19 ° Howbeit!, if the land of your posses

sion be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the Lord's tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us : but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in build

ing you an altar 'besidesi the altar of 20 the LORD our God. Did not Achan

the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell lupon' all the congregation of Israel ? and that man perished not alone in

his iniquity. 21 Then the children of Reuben and

the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and ispakel

unto the heads of the Ithousands of * 22 Israel, "?The Lord, 'thel God of gods,

the Lord, the God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in 'trespass!

against the LORD, (save Ithou' us not 23 this day,) °that we have built us an

altar to turn away! from following the LORD; or if to offer thereon burnt offering or 'meal! offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings

thereon, let the Lord himself require 24 it ; "and if we have not rather lout of

carefulness! done this, and of purposel, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have 'ye to do

with the Lord, 'thel God of Israel ? 25 °for the Lord hath made Jordan a

border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no 'portion' in the Lord: so

shall
your

children make our children 26 cease from fearing the Lord. "There

fore we said, Let us now prepare to

build us an altar, not for burnt offer. 27 ing, nor for sacrifice: obut it 'shall' be

a witness between us and you, and between! our generations after us, that we may! do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in

time to come, Ye have no 'portion' in (28 the Lord. "Therefore said we, It

shall be, when they so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we 'shalli say, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt 'offering',

nor for isacrificel; but it is a witness 29 between us and you. "God forbid

that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn 'away! this day from following the Lord, to build an altar for burnt offering!, for 'meal offering', or for 'sacrificel, besides the altar of the Lord our God that is

before his tabernacle. 30 And when Phinehas the priest, and

the princes of the congregation, leven thel heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of

Manasseh spake, it pleased them 31) 'well!. °And Phinehas the son of

Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we knowl that the Lord is in the midst of us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now have ye de

livered the children of Israel out of 32 the hand of the LORD. 'And Phine

has the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of

Israel, and brought them word again. 33 °And the thing pleased the children

of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and 'spake no more of going! up against them to warı, to destroy the land wherein the children

of Reuben and the children of! Gad 31 dwelt. And the children of Reuben

days, when the Lord had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies

good heed therefore unto yourselves,

that ye love the LORD your God. (12 °Else if ye do in any wise go back,

and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and make marriages with them,

and go in unto them, and they to you: (13) oknow for a certainty that the LORD

your God will no more drive these nations from out lof your sight'; but

they shall be 'a snarel and 'a trap! unto you, and 'a scourgel in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye per

ish from off this good land which the (14 LORD your God hath given you. °And,

behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth : and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come

to pass unto you, not one thing hath 15 failed thereof. °Andi it shall come

to pass, that as all the good things are come upon you loft which the LORD your God ispake untol you, so shall the Lord bring upon you all

the evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land

your transgression! nor your sins. 20 'If ye forsake the LORD, and serve

strange gods, then he will turn and

do you levil', and consume you, after 21 that he hath done you good. And

the people said unto Joshua, Nay; 22 but we will serve the Lord. And

Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve

him. And they said, We are wit23 nesses.

"Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart

unto the LORD, 'thel God of Israel. 24 °And the people said unto Joshua,

The LORD our God will we serve, and

Puntol his voice will we hearken!. 25 °So Joshua made a covenant with the

people that day, and set them a statute

and an ordinance in Shechem. 26 And Joshua wrote these words in

the book of the law of God; and hel took a great stone, and set it up there

under 'the oak that was by the sanct27 uary of the LORD. And Joshua said

unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness lagainst us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be

And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun,

the servant of the Lord, died, being (30 an hundred and ten years old. And

they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on

the north of the mountain of Gaash. (31 °And Israel served the Lord all the

days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that foutlived' Joshua, and had known all the lworkl of the

Lord, that he had 'wrought! for Israel. 32 °And the bones of Joseph, which the

children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in "thel parcel of ground 8which Jacob
