it shall come to pass, that as I thought to do unto them, so will I do unto you. 341 And the LORD spake unto Moses, 2 saying, Command the children of

And for the western border, ye shall have the great sea and the border 'thereof' : I this shall be your west border.

And the LORD spake unto Moses, 17 saying, These are the names of the men which shall divide the land unto you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for 19) inheritance. And these are the

And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward (5 a thousand cubits round about. And

ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. And the LORD spake unto Moses, 10 saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye pass over Jordan into the land of 11) Canaan, then ye shall appoint you

that every one that killeth any person 16 unwittingly may flee thither. But if he 'smotel him with an instrument of iron, so that he died', he is a 'manslayer: the manslayer shall surely 17 be put to death. And if he 'smotel him with a stone in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he 'died', he is a 'manslayer: the manslayer shall 18) surely be put to death. Or if he Ismote him with a weapon of wood in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died', he is a 'manslayer": the manslayer shall surely be put to 19) death. The 'avenger' of blood shall himself 'put' the 'manslayer to death': when he meeteth him, he shall 'put' 20 him to death'. And if he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died'; (21 or in enmity 'smotel him with his hand, that he died': he that smote him shall surely be put to death; he is a manslayer: the avenger of blood shall put the manslayer to 22 death', when he meeteth him. °But

if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or 'hurled upon him any thing 23 without lying in wait, or with any stone, whereby a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, 'so' that he died', and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm: 24 then the congregation shall judge between the 'smiter and the lavenger of blood according to these judge(25) ments: and the congregation shall

deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall dwell therein untill the death of the high priest, which (26) was anointed with the holy oil.

But

if the manslayer shall at any time Igo beyond the border of his city of (27) refuge, whither he 'fleeth'; and the

avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer; he shall not be guilty of (28) blood: because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the 'man

361 And the heads of the fathers' houses of the 'family' of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers' houses of (2 the children of Israel: and they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our 3 brother unto his daughters. °And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong': so shall it

be taken away from the lot of our in4 heritance. And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance be added' unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our 5 fathers. And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph 'speaketh right'. 6 This is the thing which the LORD doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their (7) father shall they marry. So shall Ino inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for the children of Israel shall cleave every one to the inheritance of the 8 tribe of his fathers. And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers. 9) So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; 'for the tribes of the children of Israel shall cleave every one to his own 10 inheritance. °Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daugh11 ters of Zelophehad: for Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father's (12 brothers' sons. They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

THE FIFTH BOOK OF MOSES, COMMONLY CALLED

DEUTERONOMY.

THESE be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel "beyond1 Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabahover against Suph', between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, 2 and Dizahab. It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea. 3 °And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them; 4) after he had 'smitten' Sihon the king

of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which 5 dwelt in Ashtaroth', at Edrei: beyond Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, say6 ing, The LORD our God spake unto

us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt (7 long enough in this mountain': °turn you, and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the Arabah, in the hill country', and in the lowland', and in the South, and by the sea shore', the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, 'as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 Behold, I have set the land before you go in and possess the land which the LORD Sware unto your fathers, 'to' Abraham, 'to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after 9 them. And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear 10 you myself alone: the LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, lyel are this day as the stars of heaven 11 for multitude. The LORD, 'the' God of your fathers, make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you! 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and 13 your strife? Take 'you' wise men,

and understanding, and known, laccording to your tribes, and I will 14 make them heads over you. And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us 15 to do. So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains "of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, 'accord16 ing to your tribes. And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the stranger that is 17 with him. Ye shall not respect persons in judgement; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye1 shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgement is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you 'ye shall bring 18 unto me, and I will hear it. And

I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

19 And we journeyed from Horeb,

land went through all that great and terrible wilderness which 'yel saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh20 barnea. And I said unto you, Ye

are come unto the hill country' of the Amorites, which the LORD our God 21 giveth unto us. Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of thy fathers, hath 'spoken' unto thee; fear not, neither be dis22) mayed'. °And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, 'Let us send men before us, that they 'may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and 'the' cities 23 Junto which we shall come. ° And the thing pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one 'man for

24 every tribe: and they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and 'spied 25 it out. And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God giveth unto us. Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD 27 your God: and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. Whither are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fenced up to heaven and moreover we have seen 29 the sons of the 'Anakim there. "Then

I said unto you, Dread not, neither be 30 afraid of them. The LORD your God who goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your 31 eyes; and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came 'unto this place. 2 Yet in this thing ye did not believe 3) the LORD your God, who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by 34 day. And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see the good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children: because he hath 31 wholly followed the LORD. Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go (38 in thither: Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage thou' him; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. °Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which 'this day have no knowledge of good for evil, they shall go

1 Or, for all this thing

in thither, and unto them will I give 40 it, and they shall possess it. But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the Il way to the Red Sea. Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and 2were forward to go up 42 into the mountain. And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your 43 enemies. So I spake unto you, and 1ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up 44 into the mountain. And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, 45 even unto Hormah. And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD hearkened not to your voice, 46 nor gave car unto you. So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

21

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as the LORD spake unto me and we compassed mount Seir 2 many days. And the LORD spake 3 unto me, saying, Ye have compassed

this mountain long enough: turn you 4 northward. And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you take ye good heed unto yourselves there5 fore: contend not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot Ito tread on: because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a posses6 sion. Ye shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for 7 money, that ye may drink. For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand he hath known' thy walking through this great wilderness these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; 8 thou hast lacked nothing. So we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir,
