1. They faftened the Crofs in the Ground. The Cross was an erect Piece of Wood, at the upper End whereof there was a tranfverfe Beam, and in the middle another Piece ftanding out; ἐφ ̓ ᾧ ἐποχῶνται οι σαυρόμενοι. Juftin. M.

2. They raised up his Body, and placed it upon that middle Piece, Numb. xxi. 9. John

4. At the Top of the erect Beam they fixed the Title, This is Jefus the King of the Jews, Luke xxiii. 38.

5. As he hung there, they gave him Wine and Myrrh to drink, Mark xv. 23. to stupifie him; but he would not have it.

How that Chrift died for our Sins, according to the Scriptures, and that he was buried:

Hrift, according to the Scriptures, was to die: For this was,

1. Typified. Ifaac, as the Type, was commanded to be offered up, Gen. xxii. 2. and tho' God afterwards accepted of a Ram prefent instead of him, ver. 13. yet that fhewed the Antitype was to die, Heb. xi. 19. the Pafchal Lamb' was to be killed, Exod. xii. 6. 1 Cor. v. 7. Heb. xiii. II, 12. Revel, iii. 8.

2. Foretold by Prophecies, Ifa. liii. 7, 8, 9. II. Jefus Chrift did accordingly die, as it is recorded by all Four Evangelifts, and the Apostles. Concerning whofe Death, obferve,

1. It was not only a painful and shameful, but likewife an accurfed Death, Deut. xxi. 23. Gal. iii. 13.

2. Yet he underwent it willingly, and with hearty Obedience to God, Phil. ii. 8. as appears, in that he cried with a loud Voice, and then gave up the Ghoft, Luke xxiii. 46.

3. Although his Soul was feparated from his Body, and fo he was truly dead, yet neither were feparated from his divine Perfon.

III. It was only for our Sins that he died. 1. Death is the Wages only of Sin, Rom. vi. 23. 2. Chrift had no Sin of his own to die for, John viii. 46. 1 Pet. il. 22.

3. Hence, as it was only for Sin he died, Ifa. liii. 10. fo it was only for our Sins, Rom. iv- 25. to fatisfy God's Juftice for them, 1 John ii. 2. that fo our Sins might be pardoned, Heb. ix. 22. Eph. i. 7. Col. i. 14. and fo we reconciled to God, Rom. v. 10. Col. i. 21, 22.

USE.

1. Behold here the infinite Love of God , i John iv. 10.

2. Oft meditate upon Christ as dying for your Sins.

3. Put your whole Truft and Confidence on him, Gal. ii. 20.

He was buried. Concerning which obferve, 1. Although by the Roman Laws, he that was Crucified was to be exposed to the Fowls of the Air, and not buried, yet God fo ordered it in his Providence, that Chrift was buried, Deut. xxi. 22, 23. John xix. 31.

2. He was buried by Two honourable Perfons, Fofeph, Matt. xxvii. 57. Luke xxiii. 5o. and Nicodemus, John xix. 39, 40. cap. iii. 1. and fo the Prophecy fulfilled, Ifa. liii. 9.

3. He was laid in a new Tomb, dug out of a Rock, Matt. xxvii. 6.
