203 Forty eight cities given

the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bafhan out of the tribe of Manaffeh.

9 Thefe were the cities appointed for all the children of Ifrael, and for the Eranger that fojourneth among them, that whofoever killeth any perfon at unawares might flee thither, and not die. by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he ftood before the congregation. CHAP XXI.

1 Eight and forty cities given by lot out of the other tribes unto the Levites 43 God gave the land and reft to the Ifraelites. THEN came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleizar the prieft, and unto Joshua the fon of Nur, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Ifrael;

2 And they fpake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan faying, he LORD commanded by the hand of Mofes to give us cities to dwell in, with the fuburbs thereof for our cattle.

3 And the children of Ifrael gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, thefe cities and their fuburbs.

13 Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest, Hebron with her fuburbs, to be a city of refuge for the flayer; and Libnah with her fuburbs,

14 And Jattir with her fuburbs, and Eshtemoa with her fuburbs,

15 And Holan with her fuburbs, and Debir with her fuburbs,

16 And Ain with her fuburbs, and Juttah with her fuburbs, and Beththemesh with her fuburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.

17 And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with her fuburbs, Geba with her fuburbs,

18 Anathoth with her fuburbs, and Almon with her fuburbs: four cities.

19, All the cities of the children of Aaron the priest, were thirteen cities with their fuburbs.

20 And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim.

4 And the lot came out for the families 21 For they gave them Shechem with of the Kohathites: and the children of her fuburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a Aaron the priest, which were of the Le-city of refuge for the flayer; and Gezer vites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah.with her fuburbs,

7 The children of Merari by their families bad out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

8 And the children of Ifrael gave by lot unto the Levites thefe cities with their fuburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Mofes.

9 And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, thefe cities which are bere mentioned by name. 10 Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: for their's was the first lot.

11 And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the fuburbs thereof round about it.

12 But the fields of the city, and the

29 Jarmuth with her fuburbs, Engannim with her fuburbs; four cities.

30 And out of the tribe of Aher, Mithal with her fuburbs, Abdom withi her fuburbs.

31 Helkath with her fuburbs, and Rehob with her fuburbs; four cities.

32 And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedifh in Galilee with her fuburbs, to be a city of refuge for the flayer; and Hammothdor with her fuburbs, and Kartan with her fuburbs; three cities:

41 All the cities of the Levites within the poffeffion of the children of Ifrael were forty and eight cities with fuburbs.

42 Thefe cities were every one their fuburbs round about them: were all these cities.

8 And he fpake unto them, faying, Re turn with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with filver, and with gold, and with brafs, and with iron, and with very much raiment : divide the fpoll of your enemies with your brethren.

9 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad and the half tribe of their Manaffeh, returned and departed from the children of Ifrael out of Shiloh, which with is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the thus country of Gilead, to the land of their poffeffion, whereof they were poffeffed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Mofes.

43 And the LORD gave unto Ifrael all the land which he fware to give unto their fathers; and they poffeffed it, and dwelt therein.

44 And the LORD gave them reft round about, according to all that he fware unto their fathers; and there ftocd not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.

45 There failed not aught of any good thing which the LORD had fpoken unto the house of Ifrael: all came to país. CHAP. XXII.

2 And faid unto them, Ye have kept all that Mofes the fervant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:

3 Ye have not left your brethren thefe many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.

10 And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manaffeh, built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to fee to.

11 ¶ And the children of Ifrael heard fay, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manalleh, have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the paffage of the children of Ifrael.

12 And when the children of Ifrael heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Ifrael gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war a gainst them.

13 And the children of Ifrael fent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manaffeh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the fon of Eleazar the priest,

16 Thus faith the whole congregation when they should fo fay to us, or to our of the LORD, What trefpafs is this that generations in time to come, that we ye have committed against the God of If-may fay again, Behold the pattern of the rael, to turn away this day from follow-altar of the LORD, which our fathers ing the LORD, in that ye have builded aade, not for burnt offerings, nor for you an altar, that ye might rebel this facrifices; but it is a witness between us day against the LORD? and you.

17 Is the iniquity of Peor toolittle for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD,

29 God forbid that we fhould rebel` against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for facrifices, befide the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.

18 But that'ye muff turn away this day from following the LORD? And it will be, feeing ye rebel today against the LORD, that tomorrow he will be wroth 30 And when Phinehas the priest, and with the whole-congregation of Ifrael. the princes of the congregation, and heads of the thousands of Ifrael, which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad,and the children of Manafsch, spake, it pleafed thein.

19 Notwithstanding, if the land of your poffellion be unclean, then pafs ye over unto the land of the poffeffion of the LORD, wherein the LORD's tabernacle dwelleth, and take poffeffion among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar befide the altar of the LORD our God.

20 Did not Achan the fon of Zerah commit a trefpafs in the accurfed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Ifrael? And that man perished not alone in his iniquity.

21 Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, and the half tribe of Manaffeh, anfwered, and faid unto the heads of the thousands of Ifrael,

31 And Phinehas the fon of Eleazar the priest faid unto the children of Reu ben, and to the children of Gad, and toy the children of Manaffeh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, be caufe ye have not committed this trefpafs against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Ifrael out of the hand of the LORD.

25 For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you. ye children. of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: fo fhall your chldren make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

26 Therefore we faid, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for facrifice:

again.

38 And the thing pleafed the children of Ifrael; and the children of Ifrael bleffs ed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

31 And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it Ball be a witnefs between us that the LORD is God.

CHAP. XXIII. ofbua's exportation before his death, 3 by former benefits, by promises, 11. and by threatenings. » AND it came to pass a long time afterthat the LORD had given reft unto Ifrael from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and ft ricken in age.

2 And Joshua called for all Ifrael, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges. and for their officers, and faid unto them, I am old and stricken in age:

27 But that it may be a witnefs between us and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the fervice of the Loap before him with our burnt offer- 3 And ye have feen all that the LORD ings, and with our facrifices, and with our your God hath done unto all these nations peace offerings: that your children may because of you; for the LORD your God not fay to our children in time to come, is he that hath fought for you. Ye have no part in the LORD.

4 Behold, I have divided unto you by 28. Therefore faid we, that it shall be, flot these nations that remain, to be an

inheritance.

inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great fea wehward.

5 And the LORD your God he fhall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your fight; and ye hall poffefs their land as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.

6 Beye therefore very courageous to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Mofes, that ye turn 2¶And Johua faid unto all the people, not afide therefrom to the right hand or reThus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, Your the left: fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor : and they ferved other gods.

7 That yecome not among thefe nations, thefe that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor caufe to fwear by them, neither ferve them, nor bow yourselves unto them;

8 But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day."

9 For the LORD hath driven out from Before you great nations,and ftrong; but as for you, no man hath been able to ftand before you unto this day.

3 And I took your father Abraham from the other fide of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his feed, and gave him Ísaac.

16 When ye have tranfgrefled the cov. enant of the LoaD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and ferv. ed other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then hall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye fhall perif quickly from off the good land which he Lath given unto you.

14¶ Now therefore fear the LORD,and ferve him in fincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers ferved on the other fide of the flood, and in Egypt; and ferve ye the LORD.

15 And if it feem evil unto you to ferve the LORD, choofe ye this day whom ye will ferve; whether the gods which your fathers ferved that were on the other fide of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites in whofe land ye dwell but as for me and my houfe, we will ferve the LORD. 16 And the people anfwered and faid, God forbid that we should forfake the LORD to ferve other gods;

17 For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did thofe great figns in our fight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we paffed:

24 And the people faid unto Joshuà, he LORD our God will we ferve, and his voice will we obey.

25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and fet them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

26 And Joshua wrote thefe words in the book of the law of God, and took a great ftone, and fer it up there under an oak, that was by the fanctuary of the LORD.

27 And Joshua faid unto all the people, Behold this ftone thall be a witnefs unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he fpake unto us it thall be therefore a witness unto you, left, ye deny your God.

28 So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.

29 And it came to país after thefe things, that Jofhua the fon of Nun, the fervant of the LORD, died, being an hun-dred and ten years old.

20 If ye forfake the LORD and ferve frange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and confume you, after that he hath done you good.

21 And the people faid unto Joshua, Nay; but we will ferve the LORD.

S1 And Ifrael ferved the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Ifrael.

32 And the bones of Jofeph, which the childrenof Ifrael brought upout of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the fons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for an hundred pieces of filver and it became the inheritance of the children of Jofeph.

22 And Jofua faid unto the people, Ye are witneffes against yourfelves that ye have chofen you the LORD, to ferve 33 And Eleazar the fon of Aaron died; him. And they faid, We are witneffes. and they buried him in a hill that per23 Now therefore put away, faid he,lained to Phinehas his ton, which was the ftrange gods which are among you, given him in mount Ephraim.

CHAP. I.

NOW after the death of Joshua it came to país, that the children of Ifrael afked the LORD, faying, Who fhall go up for us against the Canaanites firft, to fight against them?

And Judah faid unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight againit the Canaanites; and I likewife will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they flew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 But Adonibezek fled; and they purfued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7 And Adonibezek faid, I hreefcore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off,gathered their meat un der my table: as I have done, fo God hath requited me. And they brought him to ferufalem, and there he died.
