4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gold would his favour secure ; Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;

Star of the east, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.

HYMN XIII.

For the Epiphany.

1 Lo! in the East appears a light,
In eastern skies unseen before;
The wise men hail the welcome sight,
And seek the mystery to explore.

2 These ancient sages, led from far,
Began their doubtful, anxious way;
Nor rested till the wandering star
Stood o'er the place where Jesus lay.

3 They came-they saw-aud they adored;
Each costly treasure they unfold,

And offer to their infant Lord,

Their myrrh, their frankincense, and gold.

4 That star to us its light imparts ;-
Let us our pilgrimage pursue;

And with the homage of our hearts,
To Bethlehem go, and worship too.

5 May we through life its guidance trace, And mark its path o'er earthly things, Until it lead us to the place

Where Jesus reigns the King of kings!

HYMN XIV.

For Good Friday.

1. By thy birth and early years;
By thy human griefs and fears;
By thy fasting and distress
In the lonely wilderness;
By thy victory, in the hour
Of the subtle tempter's power,-
Jesus! look with pitying eye,
Hear our solemn litany.

2 By thine hour of dark despair;
By thine
agony of prayer;

By the purple robe of scorn;

By thy wounds, thy crown of thorn,
Cross and passion, pangs and cries;
By thy perfect sacrifice,-

Jesus! look with pitying eye,
Hear our solemn litany.

3 By thy deep expiring groan;
By the seal'd sepulchral stone;
By thy triumph o'er the grave;
By thy power from death to save,-
Mighty God! ascended Lord!
To thy throne in heaven restor❜d!
Prince and Saviour! hear the cry
Of our solemn litany.

HYMN XV.

For Good Friday.

1 YET is our Maker still our Friend;
Man yet may meet his Judge with joy;
God, in our nature did not send
His Son, to punish or destroy :

2 But sent Him forth to seek and save
The lost, the dying, and the dead,
Cancel the curse, despoil the grave,
And bruise for ever Satan's head.

3 Thou, who thy Son to us didst give,
That none who trust in Him should die;
Give us to Him, that we may live ;-
To his atoning blood we fly.

4 Behold his sacrifice of love,
So freely offer'd in our stead ;
Behold Him at the throne above,
And save the souls for whom He bled.

HYMN XVI.

For Easter Day.

1 CHRIST, the Lord, is risen to-day,
Our triumphant holiday;

Who endur'd the cross and grave,
Sinners to redeem and save.

Hallelujah.

2 Lo! He rises, mighty King!
Where, O Death! is now thy sting?
Lo! He claims his native sky;
Grave! where is thy victory?

3 Sinners! see your ransom paid,
Peace with God for ever made;
With your risen Saviour rise;

Hal.

Claim with Him the purchas'd skies. Hal.

4 Christ, the Lord, is risen to-day,

Our triumphant holiday;

Loud the song of triumph raise;
Sing your great Redeemer's praise.

Hal.

HYMN XVII.

For Easter Day.

1 BLEST be the wisdom and the pow'r,
The justice and the grace,
That join'd in counsel to restore
And save our ruin'd race.

2 Blest be the Lord, that sent his Son
To take our flesh and blood,
Who for our lives gave up his

own,
To make our peace with God..

3 Who honour'd all his Father's laws,
Which we had disobey'd;

Who bore our sins upon the cross,
And our full ransom paid..

4 Behold Him rising from the grave!
Behold Him rais'd on high!
He pleads his merits there to save
Transgressors doom'd to die..

HYMN XVIII.

For Easter Day.

1 FATHER of peace, and God of love! We own thy power to save,

That power by which our Shepherd rose Victorious o'er the grave.
