THE

ANALYTICAL REVIEW.

FOR OCTOBER, 1798.

TRANSACTIONS OF SOCIETIES,

ART. 1. Afiatic Refearches; or Tranfactions of the Society inftituted at Bengal for inquiring into the Hiftory and Antiquities, the Arts, Sciences, and Literature of Afia. 4to. Vol. iv. Calcutta printed, and fold by Elmfley and Bremner.

The fame reprinted in 8vo. 455 pages. Price 8s. in boards. London, Vernor and Hood. 1798.

THE fatisfaction, which we feel in announcing a fourth volume of the Afiatic Researches, is not a little damped by the advertisement, that prefents itself on opening the book, reminding us of the heavy lofs which the fociety has fuftained, in the death of it's illuftrious founder and prefident. Though on various occafions our regret has been expreffed for that unfortunate event, and another opportunity, we hope, will foon occur of rendering ampler juftice to his merits, in the review of a complete edition of his works, yet it would be more than infenfibility, it would be a dereliction of our truft, to "withhold the palling tribute of a figh," while deriving inftruction and amusement from the annals of an inftitution, which owed it's existence folely to him. The talents, the erudition, the activity, and the name, of fir W. Jones, would have been confidered as an acquifition by the moft flourishing literary or fcientific body in Europe; but in India, where genius and learning are rare exotics, and to an infant fociety, he was invaluable. Independent of the importance of his communications confidered in themselves, his extenfive and profound acquaintance with oriental letters guided the inquiries of his affociates, while his example communicated enthufiafm to their purfuits. Far be it from us, however, to infinuate a fufpicion, that the brilliant period of the Afiatic Society is paft: it's prefent collected ftrength is refpectable; we hope it will receive frequent acceffions, and that, henceforth, while the riches of the east continue to be wafted to our fhores, they will alfo be accompanied by it's intellectual treasures; a tribute which may be levied without oppreffion, enjoyed without remorse, and productive of advantages, que fuerint minus obvia graiis.
