CONDITIONS.

I. THIS WORK is uniformly and elegantly printed on a fine Wove Demy Paper, and comprized in THIRTY-FOUR NUMBERS, to be published Weekly, or the Whole or any Part of the Work at once, as the Purchaser may think proper, at One Shilling each, making four large Volumes in Octavo.

II. Thirty-two of the Numbers contain each ONE LARGE WHOLE SHEET MAP, or interefting PLATE, moft elegantly engraved, and SIXTY-FOUR PAGES of Letter-Prefs."

ADDRESS TO THE PUBLIC.

THE United States of America, as a rifing Republic, open a vast field for the contemplative Philofopher and Man of Science, the adventurous Merchant, the fkilful Manufacturer, the ingenious Mechanic, and industrious Labourer-While the found policy and benign influence of its government, seem to invite each from the different parts of the Old World to reap those advantages which a fertile foil and an increafing commerce muft ever infure, when unincumbered with impolitic Shackles and heavy Imposts.

The Inhabitants of Europe have not been infenfible of these circumftances, fo favourable to the enjoyment of HAPPINESS and OPULENCE, if we may be allowed to form a judgment of their fentiments by the numbers which have emigrated, and which continue to emigrate from its bofom-numbers which its prefent convulfed fituation will certainly increafe, and which must add to the riches and ftability, as well as prove highly advantageous to the Commerce and Manufactures of the American Republic.'

Under thefe circumftances an attempt to describe its different Climate, Soil, Produce, Arts and Manufactures-to delineate its Conftitution, Laws, Manners, Cuftoms, &c.-to reprefent the Situation of its States, Towns, Harbours, and Rivers, together with the Nature and Extent of their Commerce, &c.-to convey a clear and diftinct View of the Indian Nations which furround them; thus furnishing the European Settler with a valuable Directory for his fafety and advantage;-in fhort, to give a Complete Hiftory, Geographical, Commercial, Political, Biographical, Civil and Religious, of the United States in particular, and of America in general, muft prove highly acceptable, and needs only to be made known to be fuitably encouraged; for its Utility, if properly executed, must be admitted at any Period; but at the prefent it muft prove peculiarly interefting.

What induced the Editor to undertake this Work was a confideration, founded on experience, of the Difficulty and Expence, at prefent neceffarily incurred in attempting to gain any adequate Knowledge of the American Continent, and a defire to employ, to the advantage of his Fellow Men, the Period of a long Seclufion from his public Labours

of another Kind.

On this Subject it is only neceffary for him to fay, that wishing to gain a general acquaintance with the American continent, and particularly of the United States, he had, with many others, to regret, that to attain, in any adequate degree, his object, it was neceffary to toil through at leaft One Hundred Volumes, which, at the most moderate calculation, coft the Reader from Forty to Fifty Pounds, while the greater part of their contents is either mifcellaneous or foreign to the grand object.

To ftrip this Voluminous Mafs of its fabulous and uninterefting Parts, and to form one complete Hiftory of America, at a moderate Price, has been the Editor's Aim.

To accomplish this he has availed himself of the Labours and Abili ties of Franklin, Robertfon, Jefferfon, Abbe Raynal, Morfe, Catefby, Gordon, Ramfey, Bartram, Imlay, Barlow, Briflot, Brian Edwards, General Lee, Prefident Adams, Captain Morris, General Tarleton, Harper, Munroe, Cooper, &c. American and English Philofophical Societies, Buffon, and every other Author of confequence who has written directly or indirectly on any Part of the Hiftory of America, or on any fubject connected with it.

To this, favoured by the affiftance of Perfons who have refided in, and who are in the conftant Habit of extensive Correspondence with the different States, the Editor is enabled to add a fund of information, particularly interesting to those who intend to fettle or form Connections in any part of the Continent of America.

In short, no pains have been fpared on the Editor's Part to render this Work worthy of an extenfive Patronage and Support, and he flatters himself it is only neceffary for a difcerning Public to contemplate the PLAN of the Work, to be convinced of its Superiority over every other that has appeared on the Subject.

The MAPS, CHARTS, and PLANS, which accompany this Work, are laid down on a very large Scale, with great Accuracy, from actual Surveys, made under the inspection of the American Government, and are engraved in the best Manner.-To these are added, elegant Portraits of Dr. Franklin, General Washington, William Penn, &c. &c. &c. all taken from Original Paintings.

THE PLATES WHICH FORM

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF AMERICA,

Are elegant and accurate Reprefentations of all the most remarkable Quadrupeds, Birds, Reptiles, Infects, Fishes, Vegetables, &c. peculiar to the American Continent.

TESTIMONIES IN FAVOUR OF THIS WORK.

The Public are certainly much indebted to Mr. Winterbotham for having, in the tedious Hours of Imprifonment, laudably exerted himself in compiling this Work. Like Raleigh, who produced his valuable Hiftory of the Old World while he was confined as a State Prifoner in the Tower of London, this Hiftorian of the New World writes in a fimilar unfortunate fituation;-may he finally meet with a better Requital than that which his great predeceffor experienced!

Mr. W. has availed himself, in this Publication, of the labours of most of the hiftorians who have written on the fubject of America, and has brought into one comprehenfive view the refult of their inquiries and obfervations. Where he had not the vanity to conceive himself capable of correcting their language, he has adopted their expreffion! fo that, in a long narrative, he has often, as he modeftly expreffes himself, no other claim to merit, than what arifes from felection, and a few connecting fentences.

The general utility of this Work, with the judgment and diligence discovered by the Editor, will, we doubt not, enfure it that encouragement to which it is entitled.Monthly Review for Dec. 1795.
