Lesson 33. Disobedience of the Israelites.

The people of Israel took Bezek, Hebron, and other cities of Canaan, but did not drive out the inhabitants. They were reproved by an angel for thus disobeying God. Othniel, the nephew of Caleb, took the strong city, Debir. The Israelites forsook God, and worshipped idols; God then permitted the Canaanites to oppress them.

"Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand. Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity." Psalm cvi. 42, 43.

Lesson 34. Micah's Idolatry. The Danites, &c.

The mother of Micah made a molten image, and Micah obtained a Levite to be his priest. Some men

of the tribe of Dan took away the idol and the priest, and set up the idol at Laish, which city they called Dan. The Benjamites were very wicked, and the whole tribe, except 600 men, was destroyed by the other tribes.

God gives us teachers and ministers to tell us what is right, but Micah and his mother ignorantly and foolishly wanted to worship God in their own way, and not as he had commanded. Their image was stolen by the Danites, and thus the Danites, after Micah, openly set up idolatry in Israel.

Lesson 35.

Servitudes and Deliverances of Israel.

God suffered the Israelites to be oppressed for their idolatry; but when they repented he raised up Othniel to deliver them. He permitted the king of Moab, the Philistines, and the Canaanites to

oppress them at different times; but whenever they repented and cried to him, he raised up valiant men to deliver them.

"He gave them into the hand of the heathen, and they that hated them ruled over them.... Nevertheless he regarded their affliction when he heard their cry; And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies." Psalm cvi. 41, 44, 45.

Lesson 36. History of Ruth.

Naomi went to live in Moab with her husband and her two sons, when there was a famine in Canaan. Ruth, a Moabitess, married one of Naomi's

sons.

Naomi's husband and her sons died, and she wished to return. to Canaan. Ruth loved her motherin-law, and would not leave her, but came into Canaan with her, and God

The people murmured for flesh, and God sent them quails. They were afflicted with a great plague, and many died. Twelve spies were sent forth to examine Canaan. They brought a large bunch of grapes, and said Canaan was a land flowing with milk and honey. Ten of the spies reported evil of the land.

exceedingly in the wilderness, and be desert. And he gave them their leanness into their soul." Psalm

Lesson 26. The Sentence. Korah's Rebellion.

God said the Israelites should not enter Canaan, but wander forty years in the wilderness. He said their children should possess the land; but that the two faithful spies should enter Canaan. The unfaithful spies died of the plague. Korah, Dathan, and Abiram rebelled against Moses. The earth opened and swallowed them up.

"The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. And a fire was kindled in their company, the flame burnt up the wicked." Psalm cvi. 17, 18.

Lesson 27. Fiery Serpents sent.

The people murmured for water, and God commanded Moses to speak to the rock. He struck it twice, and spoke angrily; for which God
