5 O let thine all-constraining love
Confirm our faith, our fears remove;
And sweetly influence each breast,
And guide us to eternal rest.

HYMN 38. L. M.

To Christ, the Judge of all.

1 CREATOR of the starry frame,
Light of the souls who trust in Thee,
Jesus! Redeemer of mankind,

To Thee we call on bended knee.

2 Thou, when the tempter's arts prevailed,
Didst hasten down on wings of love,
To shield and save a ruined world
With health and peace from heaven above.

3 Exalted now, thy glorious power
Extends through all eternity;

And saints in heaven, and fiends in hell Bow at thy name with trembling knee.

4 To Thee, great Judge of all! we look; Grant us thy heavenly help, we pray; Guide us in life, and guard in death, And shield us in the judgement day.

5 For thine the glory is, and power,
Eternal Sire! eternal Son!

Eternal Spirit! thine the praise,-
The one in three, the three in one.

HYMN 39. P. M.

Day of Judgement.

1 DAY of Judgement! day of wonders!
Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,
Louder than a thousand thunders,
Rocks the vast creation round.
How the summons

Will the sinner's heart confound!

2 See the Judge, our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!
Ye who long for his appearing,
Then shall say, "This God is mine."

Gracious Saviour,

Own me in that day for thine!

3 At his call the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea!
All the powers of nature shaken,
From his glance prepare to flee.
Careless sinner!

What will then become of thee?

4 But to those who have confessed, Lov'd, and served the Lord below, "Come near, ye blessed : "See the kingdom I bestow !

He will say,

"You for ever

"Shall my love and glory know!"

HYMN 40. L. M.

After the Sermon.

1 DISMISS us with thy blessing, Lord!
Help us to feed upon thy word;
All that has been amiss forgive,
And may thy Spirit in us live.

2 Though we are guilty, Thou art good;
Blot out our sins with Jesu's blood;
Each weary, contrite soul release,
And bid us all depart in peace.

HYMN 41. P. M.

National humiliation.

1 DREAD Jehovah! God of nations!
From thy temple in the skies,
Hear thy people's supplications,
Now for their deliverance rise.
Lo! with deep contrition turning,
Humbly at thy feet we bend;
Fasting, praying, weeping, mourning,
Hear us, spare us, and defend.

2 Though our sins, our hearts confounding,
Long and loud for vengeance call,
Thou hast mercy more abounding;
Jesus' blood can cleanse them all:
Let that mercy veil transgression,
Let that blood our guilt efface;
Save thy people from oppression,
Save from spoil thy holy place.

3 Hear, O God! the vows we render;
With our hosts to battle go;
Shield the head of each defender,
And confound the haughty foe:
So when ceased the battle's raging,
Thine shall be the victor's praise,
And in holy bonds engaging,
We will serve Thee all our days.

HYMN 42. C. M.

For the love and fear of God.

1 ETERNAL God! we look to Thee; To Thee for help we fly:

Thine eye

alone our wants can see,

Thy hand alone supply.

2 From path to path we roam for rest,
But all our search is vain;
We seek for life among the dead,
For joy, where sorrows reign.

3 Alas! by passion's force subdued,
'Too oft with stubborn will
We blindly shun the latent good,
And choose the specious ill.

4 Not what we wish, but what we want Oh! let thy grace supply;

The good, unasked, in mercy grant,
The ill, though asked, deny.

HYMN 43. L. M.

Public worship.

1 ETERNAL Source of truth and light!
To Thee we look, on Thee we call ;
Lord! we are nothing in thy sight,
But Thou to us art "all in all.”

2 Still may thy children in thy word
Their common trust and refuge see;
Oh! bind us each to other, Lord!
By one close bond, the love of Thee.
3 Without the gate of thy blest house,
We leave our mortal cares and fears;
Hear Thou our prayers, accept our vows,
And cheer our hearts, and dry our tears.
4 So shall our sun of hope arise

With brighter, and still brighter ray,
"Till Thou shalt bless our longing eyes
With beams of everlasting day.

HYMN 44. C. M.

To the Holy Spirit.

1 ETERNAL Spirit! God of truth!
Our contrite hearts inspire;
Kindle the flame of heavenly love,
And feed the pure desire.

2 'Tis thine to sooth the sorrowing mind
With guilt and fear opprest;

'Tis thine to bid the dying live, And give the weary rest.
