The ten Virgins.

CHAPTER XLIV.

The Judgment. The Last Supper. Jesus washes His Disciples' feet.

ESUS said, Then shall the kingdom of heaven

be likened unto ten virgins, which took their

lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were Wise, and five were Foolish. They that were Foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them. But the Wise took oil in their vessels, with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the Foolish said unto the -Wise, Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. But the Wise answered, Not so, lest there be not enough for us and you; but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage; and the door was shut. Afterwards came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, lord, open to us. But he answered, and said, Verily, I say unto you, I know

you not. Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory. And before Him shall be gathered all nations; and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats. And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for

you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungred, and ye gave Me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took Me in naked, and ye clothed Me; I was sick and ye visited Me; I was in prison, and ye came unto Me. Then shall the righteous answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we Thee an hungred, and fed Thee? or thirsty, and gave Thee drink? When saw we Thee a stranger, and took Thee in? or naked, and clothed Thee? or when saw we Thee sick, or in prison, and came unto Thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily, I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me. Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was an hungred, and ye gave Me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave Me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took Me not in; sick, and in prison, and ye visited Me not. Then

shall they also answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we Thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto Thee? Then shall He answer them, saying, Verily, I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal.

Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end. And having finished all these sayings, He said unto His disciples, Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill Him. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people. Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot; being of the number of the twelve, and he went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver Him unto you? And they were glad, and covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray Him unto them in the absence of the multitude. Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. And His disciples said unto Jesus,

Where wilt Thou that we go and prepare, that Thou mayest eat the passover? And He sent Peter and John, saying, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the good man of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with My disciples? And he shall shew you a large upper-room furnished: there make ready. And they went, and found as He had said unto them; and they made ready the passover. And in the evening He cometh and sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. And He said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat, this is My Body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this, for this is My Blood of the new testament, which is shed for many, for the remission of sins. And supper being ended, the devil having put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, to betray Him, Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside His garments, and took a towel, and girded Himself. After that He poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded. Then cometh He

to Simon Peter; and Peter said unto Him, Lord, dost Thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said. unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto Him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with Me. Simon Peter saith unto Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. So after He had washed their feet, and taken His garments, and was set down again, He said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call Me Master and Lord; and ye say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth Me, and he that receiveth Me, receiveth Him that sent Me. When Jesus had thus said, He was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray Me. And the disciples began to be sorrowful, and to say unto Him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? Now there was leaning on Jesus' breast one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask of whom Jesus spake. He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto Him, Lord, who is it? Jesus answered, He it is to whom I shall give a sop when I have dipped it. The Son of man goeth as it is written of Him; but woe unto that man by whom
