PICTURES AS A CONTRIBUTION TO SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRESS. For many years art has been an efficient aid to the Sunday school teacher. But in no department of Sunday school progress has there been a greater development in these later years both in quality and extent of use.

The colored maps in these NOTES are drawn from the latest and best authorities, and approach the highest point of map-making. The full-page halftones and the pen-and-ink drawings in the text are taken from the best photographs obtained from many sources.

PENNY PICTURES.

There is a vast range of pictures beyond what is possible to include in this volume, but to which the teacher may have access. Wilde's penny pictures illustrate almost every lesson, usually by several different ones, from which a choice can be made. See a Selected List on page 12.

PICTURES FOR ADORNING THE SUNDAY SCHOOL ROOM.

The day schools are decorating their rooms with pictures both for instruction and for beauty. These hanging upon the wall in daily view of the scholars become an education both in history and art, and good taste.

For the same reasons the Sunday school rooms should be adorned with pictures that are both beautiful and illustrative of the Bible History, kept always before the eyes, and giving a home-like atmosphere. A large number of reproductions of paintings by the great masters, and the most interesting of modern paintings, exact copies in form and color, are made in all sizes and at moderate cost by a wonderful secret process, in brown and gray prints, and hand-colored in the exact colors and shades of the originals.

The publishers have devised a way by which day schools can earn the necessary money, and which is equally well adapted to classes in the Sunday school. Horace K. Turner Co.

TRAVELLING IN THE HOLY LAND THROUGH THE STEREOSCOPE.

Stereoscopic Photographs are again becoming popular because the pictures are incomparably better than those of a few years ago. They are such life-like representations of the places where our Lord lived and walked and taught, the figures and the scenes are brought out so clearly, that it is almost the same as if we were actually travelling in the Holy Land. People are more and more waking up to the likeness of the experiences that may be gained in the stereoscope to those gained by viewing them on the spot. There are one hundred pictures of Palestine, in a leather case, with a book enclosing a map and a description of the tour through the Holy Land. Of course a selection can

be made of the pictures. This can be made most useful for an evening meeting with the class. It would be well for each Sunday school to own a set of these pictures with several stereoscopes. Apply to Underwood & Underwood, Fifth Avenue and 19th Street, New York.

A NEW DEPARTMENT OF SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK.

UTILIZING WASTE MATERIAL.

This new department is a blessing to Sunday schools both in our own land, and in mission fields. It is blessed to those who give and those who receive. It meets a special need in the home schools because it gives them another opportunity to put into practice the truths they learn.

By Waste Material is here meant the Sunday school supplies which have been used in the schools of the home land and which would be still very serviceable if they could be placed in the hands of those who are doing such successful work on the foreign field. There is a demand by the missionaries for many things which are usually thrown away or destroyed after they have told the Bible story once.

SCRAP BOOKS.

Scrap books of pictures, either cards or prints cut from magazines and papers, especially in colors, bring joy and instruction to the boys and girls across the Sea.

THE MESSAGE OF PICTURES.

The call is especially loud for the lesson picture cards and the large quarterly picture roll. No matter what language one speaks, all but the blind can be both instructed and pleased with these bright pictures illustrating Bible story or Bible land. These pictures are never thrown away after they reach the mission station. They help to tell the facts of life and love in the church service, the Sunday school and on the itinerating trips; they are used as rewards for attendance at Sunday school and for committing to memory various passages of the Bible. In the homes these pictures are often the only decorations to brighten the walls. Over sixteen hundred mission stations in most of the foreign fields are now regularly receiving some of these supplies.

Every known Leper Home in the world was provided with pictures for distribution on Christmas Day. This will be repeated each year.

Write to Rev. Samuel D. Price, 805 Hartford Building, Chicago, Ill., U.S.A.

He has been appointed by the World's Sunday School Association to be head of this department, and will send you instructions as to what to do and how to do it.

In presenting the points at which the Jews violated the law, the author has followed a method which is singularly clear and helpful. The work deserves wide recognition as a reverent, painstaking, comprehensive study of a so-called trial, which is of perpetual interest because of its critical importance. (Empire Pub.
