STORY OF SYROPHENICIAN WOMAN AS IN CLEMENTINE HOMILIES.

CLEM. Hom. ii. 19.

II.

IRENEUS ON CHRIST'S AGE AT DEATH.

ST. IRENEUS held, that Christ lived to the fiftieth year of his age (in order that he might sanctify old age among his followers,) before he "came to death," ("usque ad mortem pervenit;") – he drew this conclusion not only from the text, "Thou art not yet fifty years old," but from "all the elders'" testimony "who assembled with John the disciple of the Lord in Asia,” πάντες δι πρεσβύτεροι μαρτυροῦσιν, δι κατα την Ασίαν Ιωάννῃ τῷ τοῦ Κυρίου μαθητῇ συμβεβληκότες. And he adds, - " Certain of these " (disciples)" saw not only John but also other Apostles, and heard these very things from themselves and bore witness to their relating it in

this manner." As the date of the procuratorship of Pontius Pilatus, under whom Christ suffered, cannot by any means be extended to so late a period as fifty years after Christ's birth, it would follow from this strongly authenticated statement that Christ survived the crucifixion and the resuscitation (or so-called "resurrection") for some years. Irenæus says he was past forty when the Jews said to him "Thou art not yet fifty," and in his fiftieth year when he died. "Quinquagesimo anno declinat" (ætas) “jam in ætatem seniorem, quam habens, Dominus noster docebat," etc. (Græco-Latin). Iren. adv. Hær. ii. cap. 22, 4, 5, 6, (Grabe).
