NOT having written these Lectures with any view to publication, I did not always pause in their composition to consider whether a thought or an expression was strictly original, or a reminiscence of what I had recently read upon the subject. Hence it is quite possible that in preparing the MS. for the press, I may have omitted some references, and even some marks of quotation, which would appear on the page if every one had his due. I desire, however, to make the best reparation in my power for any such omissions by acknowledging my obligations, first and foremost to Keil's most valuable Commentary on Kings, being Vols. XV. and XVI. (new series)
