Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary,

2. How do ye prove he was fo conceived? A. Luke i. 25. And the Angel answered and faid unto her, The Holy Ghoft fhall come upon thee, and the power of the highest fhall overshadow thee; therefore alfo that holy thing which shall be born of thee, fhall be called the Son of God. Matth. i. 20. But while he thought on these things, behold the Angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a Dream, Jaying, Fofeph thou Son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy Wife: for that which is conceiv'd in her is of the Holy Ghost.

2. Why was that neceffary?

A. That he might be without Sin, Heb. vii. 26. For fuck an High Priest became us, who is holy, barmless, undefiled, feparate from Sinners, and made higher than the Heavens.

2. How do ye prove that his Mother was a Virgin?

A. Ifa. vii. 14. Therefore the Lord himself full give you a fign, behold a Virgin fhall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call his Name Immanuel. Luke i. 34. 2. Was he then truly Man?

A. Yes, 1 Tim. ii. 5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Chrift Fefus. John i. 14. And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we bebeld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

A. No. One as both. Acts xx. 28. Take heed therefore unto your felves, and to all the flock over which the Holy Ghost bath made you Overfeers,to feed the Church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

A. If he was not Man, he could not have died at all. If he was not God his Death would have

done us no good.

2. How do ye prove that Chrift was to suf

fer?

A. Luk. xxiv. 25, 26. Then he faid unto them, O Fool, and flow of heart to believe all that the Prophets have spoken.. Ought not Chrift to have fuffered these things, and to enter into his Glory? Gen. iii. 15. And I will put Enmity between thee and the Woman, and between thy feed and her feed, it shall bruife thy head, and thou shalt bruife his beel.

2. Why did he suffer?

A. For our Sins, Ifa. liii. 5. But he was wounded for our Tranfgreffioms, he was bruised for our Iniquities, the chaftifement of our Peace was upon him, and with his ftripes we are healed, 1 Pet. iii. 18. For Chrift alfo hath once fuffered for fins, the just for the unjuft (that he might bring us to God) being put to death in the flesh, but quickned by the Spirit. 1 Johnii. 2. And he is the propitiation for our Sins: and not for ours only, but alfo for the fins of the whole world. 2 Cor. v. 21. For he hath made him to be fin for us, who know no fin; that we might be made the Righteousness of God in him.

What Benefit was that to us?

A. Our Sins are thereby pardoned, Eph. i. 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of fins, according to the riches of his

grace.

A. Because he fuffered in our Nature united to his Perfon, Acts xx. 28. Take heed therefore unto your felves, and to all the flock over the which the Holy Ghoft bath made you Overfeers, to feed the

2. Who was he?

A. Governor of Judea, Luke iii. 1. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cefar, Pontius Pilate being Governor of Judea, and Herod being Tetrarch of Galilee, and his Brother Philip Tetrarch of Iturea, and of the Region of Trachonitis, and Lyfanias the Tetrarch of Abilene.

2. How came he to fuffer under him?

A. The Jews delivered him to him, Mattb. xxvii. 1, 2. When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took councel against fefus to put him to death; and when they bad bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the Governor. John xviii. 30, 31. They answered and faid unto him, If he were not a malefactor we would not have delivered him up unto thee. Then faid Pilate unto them, take ye him and judge him according to your law. The Jews thereFore faid unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.

2. What did he do to him?

A. He acknowledged him innocent, and yet condemned him to die, Matth. xxvii. 24, 26. When Pilate faw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and w ed his hands before the multitude, faying, I am innocent of the blood of this just perfon: See ye to it. Then releafed be Barabbas unto them: and when be bad fcourged Fefus, be delivered him to be cr cified.

2. Why is his Name put into the Creed?

A. That we may know the Time when Chrift fuffered, Gal. iv. 4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God fent forth his Son made of a Woman, made under the Law.

A. That the Scriptures might be fulfilled, P. xxii. 16. For dogs have compaffed me, the affembly of the wicked have inclofed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. Zach. xii. 10. And I will pour upon the boufe of David, and upon the inhabitants of ferufalem, the Spirit of grace and of Supplications, and they fhall look upon me whom they bave pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourneth for his only fon, and fhall be in bitterness for him as one that is in bitterness for his first born. Numb. xxi. 9. And Mofes made a ferpent of brass and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a Serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the Serpent of Brafs, he lived. John iii. 14 And as Mofes lifted up the Serpent in the Wilderness, even fo muft the Son of man be lifted up.

A. Luke xxiii. 33. And when they were come ta the place which is called Calvary, there they cruci fied him and the malefactors; one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
