ACTS

Among them which are fanctified by Faith that is in me.

are fanctified only by Faith in

WE Chrift.

I. Sanctification is not natural to us, neither can it be acquired by our own natural Powers and Faculties, Rom. viii. 7, 8. 2 Cor. iii. 5. Ephef. ii. 8. Jer. xiii. 23.

But it is infufed into us by God, Job. vi. 44. Lev. xx. &. Jer. xxxii. 39. Ezek. xi. 19. 2 Tim. ii. 25, 26.

II. Our Sanctification in Scripture is afcribed in a peculiar Manner to God the Holy Ghoft, as the immediate Author and Worker of it, 2 Theff. ii. 13. Rom. i. 4.

1. He enlightens our Minds, Ephef. i. 17, 18.
I Cor. ii. 10, 12.

2. He convinceth the Judgment, Job. xvi. 7.
3. He renews the Will, and fo regenerates and
fanctifies the whole Soul, Phil. ii. 13. Tit.
iii. 5. Job. iii. 5.

4. He guides and directs us in the Ways of
Holiness, Rom. viii. 14. 1 Cor. vi. 11.

III. The Holy Ghoft is fent upon us to fanctify and make us holy, only upon the Account of Christ's Merit and Mediation for us.

[blocks in formation]

Therefore it is called the Spirit of Christ, Rom. viii. 9.

He promiseth to fend it, Job. xv. 26.

It was not given till Chrift's Afcenfion, Job. vii. 39.

When afcended, he fent it, Acts ii. 33.

So that it is by him only that we partake of it, Tit. iii. 5, 6. Rom. v. 5,6.

And whatsoever it does for us, it first receives it from Chrift, Job. xvi. 14.

For he proceeds from the Son as well as from the Father: And whatsoever he doth for us, is only because Chrift, from whence he proceeds, took our Nature upon him.

IV. Hence our Sanctification depends altogether upon Chrift's Merits and Interceffion for

us.

So that we are fanctified in him, 1 Cor. i. 2. He was made our Sanctification, 1 Cor. i. 30. He fanctifies us, Ephef. v. 25, 26, 27.

And gives us every Thing conducing there

unto:

1. Repentance, Acts v. 31.

2. Converfion, Acts iii. 26.

3. Faith, Heb. xii. 2. Luke xvii. 5. cap. xxii. 32. 4. Grace and Power to do good Works, Job. xv. 4, 5. Phil. 4. 12, 13.

Yea, this was the great End of his Death and Paffion for us, Tit. ii. 14. Gal. i. 4. Heb. ix. 14. I Pet. i. 18.

So that whatsoever Grace we have, we muft thank Chrift for it, Rom. vii. 24, 25.

[blocks in formation]

V. The Way whereby we partake of this Sar&ification in and through Chrift, is by believing. in him.

By Faith that is in me.

I Joh. v. 5. Gal. ii. 20. Acts xv. 9. Job. xv. 5. Acts xvi. 31,

This therefore is the firft and great Thing which we are to believe in Chrift for, even for our Sanctification.

Which Faith may be attained by,

1. Prayer, Luke xi. 13. Fac. i. 5.
2. Hearing, Rom. x. 17.

3. Meditation, confidering especially what
ftrong Grounds we have to believe, even the
Infallibility of God and his Word, Heb. vi.
17, 18.

4. The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, Acts

ii. 42.

This comprizes all the reft.
