affecting the stability of their position. The stray elections which have taken place throughout the country have confirmed the confidence felt in the present administration. We trust that in the ensuing session they will prove themselves worthy of the confidence reposed in them. The only political incident of note has been a strange bid for restoration to power made by one who, in his time, has played many parts, but has never hitherto exhibited himself as a Protestant champion. Mr. Gladstone has fulminated a pamphlet against the monstrosity of Papal Infallibility, which has shocked and confounded his Romish supporters, and has revealed something of the agony which must distress the consciences of the more intelligent among them, resulting from recent developments of ecclesiastical usurpation. The pamphlet is a homage to the latent Protestantism of England, which will not, we hope, be lost sight of in the coming struggles.

We notice with much regret the consecration of a huge mass-house in the diocese of Winchester, similar to that recently opened, but not consecrated, we believe, in the diocese of Chichester. We most unfeignedly deplore the sanction thus given to bastard Romanism.

In France there is, as usual, much disquiet and unrest.

The Emperor of Germany has opened his Parliament; and although, no doubt, he honestly intends to do his utmost to preserve peace, he is, at the same time, clearly making preparations for war, in case it should become a necessity. Many important changes and improvements affecting the internal condition of the vast empire over which he rules are in progress, which, when carried out, will add materially to the welfare of his subjects. The unpleasant affair of Count Arnim still occupies public attention in Germany. The Count has been again arrested. The would-be assassin of Prince Bismarck has been condemned to imprisonment.

In Spain there has been an attempt made by Don Carlos to besiege Irun, but it has ended in ignominious failure.

We record with sincere regret the loss which the Church of England has sustained by the death of that most excellent man, the Rev. C. Kemble, Rector of Bath. To himself we doubt not that "to die is gain"; but when there are so few upright among men, it is a serious thing when "good men perish out of the earth."
