God is a constant sure defence
Against opposing rage:

As troubles rise, his needful aids
In our behalf engage.

3 All they that know thy gracious name
Will in thy truth confide;

Thou, Lord, hast ne'er forsaken them,
That on thy help relied.

Sing praises therefore to the Lord,
From Sion, his abode;

Proclaim his deeds, till all the world
Confess no other God.

Prayer for final deliverance.

4 TAKE pity on my troubles, Lord,
Which spiteful foes create—
Thou, that hast rescued me so oft
From death's devouring gate.

5 That I may show forth all thy praise
With such as love thy Name;
And in thy house with grateful joy
Thy saving power proclaim.

6 The wicked and deceitful men
Go down to hell below;
And all the people of the world,

That God refuse to know.
7 God's people, though they suffer long,
Shall have his promis'd aid;

He will fulfil their patient hope,
Though for a time delay'd.

PSALM 10.

The humble expostulation and faith of the church, under persecution from the spirit of antichrist in the world.

1 WHY from thy church withdraw, O Lord? Why hidest thou thy face?

By foes enclos'd, opprest with woe,

We seek thy wonted grace.

2 Arise, O Lord; stretch forth thine arm, Nor let the wicked say;

"Your God regards not what we do,— He never will repay.”

3 Thou, Lord, hast seen;-thou wilt requite;Thou art for ever King;

We still commend our cause to thee;
Thou wilt deliv'rance bring.

4 Thou wilt the humble suppliants hear,
That to thy throne repair;

Thou wilt prepare their hearts to pray,
And then accept the prayer.

5 'Tis thine the arm of pride to break,
And make the godless bow:
Thou art the Saviour of the weak,
The orphan's father Thou!

PSALM 11.

The omniscience and dealings of God.

1 THE Lord in heaven has fix'd his throne,
His eye surveys the world below;
To him all mortal things are known,
His eyelids search our spirits through.

2 If he afflicts his saints so far,

Το

What

prove their love, and try their grace,
may the bold transgressors fear!
His very soul abhors their ways.

3 His wrath will on the wicked rain

Tempests of brimstone, fire, and death,
Such as he kindled on the plain
Of Sodom with his angry breath.

4 His saints the righteous Lord approves,
In them he places his delight;

The humble and sincere he loves,

And guides them to the realms of light.

PSALM 12.

The church, amidst the decrease of piety, and the increase of corruption, reposes on the word of God.

1 WHEN godly men decrease, O Lord,
Do thou my cause defend;
Degen❜rate times can few afford,
Who will the truth befriend.

2 Yet while their smooth deceits abound,
They cannot prosper long;

God will arise, and will confound
The proud and boastful tongue.
3 The word of God shall still abide,
And void of falsehood be;
As is the silver, seven times tried,
From drossy mixture free.

4 The promise of thy aiding grace
Shall reach its purpos'd end;
Thy servants from the faithless race
Thou ever wilt defend.

PSALM 13.

The distressed and desponding believer animated by the prayer of faith.

1 HOW long wilt thou forget me, Lord!
Must I for ever mourn?

How long wilt thou withdraw from me-
Oh! never to return?

2 How long shall sorrow wring my heart,
And dark despondence reign?
The foe rejoice at my complaint,
And triumph o'er my pain?

3 O hear! and to my longing eyes
Restore thy wonted light;

Save me from death; lest watchful foes
Should at my fall delight.

4 I place my never-failing trust
Beneath thy mercy's wing;
I'll triumph in thy saving health,
And all thy bounty sing.

PSALM 14.

The folly, fruits, and consequences off starve. 1 THE fool would in his heart suppos That GOD is but a name;

Their deeds the sad mistake disciss
For virtue they disclaim.

2 The Lord look'd down from USAVED A LOG
The sons of men to view;
To see if any own'd his power,
Or truth and justice kur.

3 He saw that all were gone aside,
Degen'rate grown, auc iras,
None takes religion for us get
Of all the sinful race.
