2 His sovereign power, without our aid, Made us of clay, and formed us men; And when, like wandering sheep, we strayed,

IIe brought us to his fold again.
3 We are his people, we his care,
Our souls, and all our mortal frame:
What lasting honors shall we rear,
Almighty Maker, to thy name!

4 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs;
High as the heavens our voices raise;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.
5 Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love;
Firm as a rock thy truth must stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

1 JEHOVAH reigns; his throne is high; His robes are light and majesty; His glory shines with beams so bright, No mortal can sustain the sight. 2 His terrors keep the world in awe; His justice guards his holy law; Yet love reveals a smiling face; And truth and promise seal the grace. 3 Through all his works his wisdom shines, And baffles Satan's deep designs; is sovereign to fulfill power The noblest counsels of his will.

4 And will this glorious Lord descend To be my Father and my Friend? Then let my songs with angels join; Heaven is secure, if God be mine.

1 FROM all that dwell below the skies, Let the Creator's praise arise:

1

Let the Redeemer's name be sung,

Through every land, by every tongue.

Eternal are thy mercies, Lord!

Eternal truth attends thy word:

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more.

45.

ALL people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell,
Come ye before him and rejoice.

2 The Lord, ye know, is God indeed,
Without our aid he did us make;
We are his flock, he doth us feed,
And for his sheep he doth us take.
3 Oh, enter, then, his gates with praise;
Approach with joy his courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless his name always,
For it is seemly so to do.

4 For why? the Lord our God is good,
His mercy is for ever sure;

His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.

1 LOUD hallelujahs to the Lord,
From distant worlds where creatures dwell!
Let heaven begin the solemn word,
And sound it dreadful down to hell.
2 Wide as his vast dominion lies,

Make the Creator's name be known;
Loud as his thunder shout his praise,
And sound it lofty as his throne.
3 Jehovah 't is a glorious word!

Oh, may it dwell on every tongue: But saints who best have known the Lord, Are bound to raise the noblest song. 4 Speak of the wonders of that love Which Gabriel plays on every chord : From all below, and all above, Loud hallelujahs to the Lord! 47.

1 WHAT equal honors shall we bring
To thee, O Lord our God, the Lamb,
When all the notes that angels sing
Are far inferior to thy name?

2 Worthy is he who once was slain,
The Prince of Peace, who groaned and
died;

Worthy to rise, and live, and reign
At his almighty Father's side.

3 Blessings forever on the Lamb,

Who bore the curse for wretched men:
Let angels sound his sacred name,
And every creature say, Amen!

48.

1 WITH glory clad, with strength arrayed,
The Lord, that o'er all nature reigns,
The world's foundation strongly laid,
And the vast fabric still sustains.

2 How sure established is thy throne!
Which shall no change or period see;
For thou, O Lord, and thou alone,
Art God from all eternity.

3 The floods, O Lord, lift their voice,
up
And toss the troubled waves on high;
But God above can still their noise,
And make the angry sea comply.

49.

1 GIVE to the Lord, ye sons of fame,
Give to the Lord renown and power;
Ascribe due honors to his name,
And his eternal might adore.
2 The Lord proclaims his power aloud,
O'er all the ocean and the land;
His voice divides the watery cloud,
And lightnings blaze at his command.
3 The Lord sits Sovereign on the flood;
The Thunderer reigns forever King;
But makes his church his blest abode,
Where we his awful glories sing.

4 In gentler language, there the Lord
The counsels of his grace imparts:
Amid the raging storm, his word
Speaks peace and courage to our hearts.

EVENING HYMN. L. M.

[graphic]

50.

1 GLORY to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, oh, keep me, King of kings!
Beneath the shadow of thy wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord! through thy dear Son,
The ill which I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I

may dread

The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at thy judgment day.
4 Be thou my guardian while I sleep,
Thy watchful station near me keep;
My heart with love celestial fill,

And guard me from th' approach of ill.

5 Lord, let my soul forever share

The bliss of thy paternal care!
"T is heaven on earth, 't is heaven above,
To see thy face, and sing thy love.

6 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

[blocks in formation]

2 The Lord is King! who then shall dare Resist his will, distrust his care?

3

Holy and true are all his ways:

Let every creature speak his praise.

The Lord is King! exalt your strains,
Ye saints, your God, your Father reigns;
One Lord, one empire, all secures :

He reigns, and life and death are yours.
4 Oh, when his wisdom can mistake,
His might decay, his love forsake,
Then may his children cease to sing,-
The Lord omnipotent is King!

[blocks in formation]

Grace!-'tis a sweet, a charming theme:
My thoughts rejoice at Jesus' name:
Ye angels! dwell upon the sound:
Ye heavens! reflect it to the ground.
4 Oh! may I reach that happy place,
Where he unvails his lovely face,
Where all his beauties you behold,
And sing his name to harps of gold.

2 Recount his works in strains divine, His wondrous works-how bright they shine!

Praise him for his almighty deeds, Whose greatness all your praise exceeds. 3 Awake the trumpet's piercing sound, To spread your sacred pleasures round; In praise awake each tuneful string, And to the solemn organ sing. 4 Let all, whom life and breath inspire, Attend, and join the blissful choir; But chiefly ye, who know his word, Adore, and love, and praise the Lord! 54.

1 AWAKE, my tongue, thy tribute bring To Him who gave thee power to sing: Praise him, who is all praise above, The source of wisdom and of love.

2 How vast his knowledge! how profound! A depth where all our thoughts are drowned!

The stars he numbers, and their names He gives to all those heavenly flames. 3 Through each bright world above, behold Ten thousand thousand charms unfold; Earth, air, and mighty seas combine, To speak his wisdom all divine. 4 But in redemption, oh, what grace! Its wonders, oh, what thought can trace! Here wisdom shines forever bright: Praise him, my soul, with sweet delight.

55.

BLESS, O my soul, the living God;

Call home thy thoughts that rove abroad:

Let all the powers within me join

In work and worship so divine.

Bless, O my soul, the God of grace;
His favors claim thy highest praise:
Why should the wonders he hath wrought
Be lost in silence and forgot?

3 T is he, my soul, that sent his Son
To die for crimes which thou hast done;
He owns the ransom, and forgives
The hourly follies of our lives.

4 Let every land his power confess;
Let all the earth adore his grace:
My heart and tongue with rapture join,
In work and worship so divine.

2 This precious truth his word declares,
And all his mercies prove;
Jesus, the gift of gifts, appears,
To show that "God is love."

3 Behold his patience, bearing long
With those who from him rove;
Till mighty grace their hearts subdues,
To teach them-" God is love."
4 Oh, may we all, while here below,

This best of blessings prove; Till warmer hearts, in brighter worlds, Proclaim that "God is love."

58.

1 WHAT shall I render to my God, For all his kindness shown? My feet shall visit thine abode,

My songs address thy throne.

2 Among the saints that fill thy house,
My offering shall be paid;
There shall my zeal perform the vows
My soul in anguish made.

3 How much is mercy thy delight,
Thou ever-blesséd God!

How dear thy servants in thy sight-
How precious is their blood!

4 How happy all thy servants are!
How great thy grace to me!

My life, which thou hast made thy care,
Lord! I devote to thee.

5 Now I am thine-for ever thine;
Nor shall my purpose move;
Thy hand hath loosed my bonds of pain,
And bound me with thy love.

6 Here, in thy courts, I leave my vow,
And thy rich grace record;
Witness, ye saints! who hear me now,
If I forsake the Lord.

59.

1 GLORY to God the Father be,
Glory to God the Son,
Glory to God the Holy Ghost-
Glory to God alone!

2 My soul doth magnify the Lord,
My spirit doth rejoice

In God, my Saviour and my God;
I hear his joyful voice.

3 I need not go abroad for joy,
Who have a feast at home;
My sighs are turnéd into songs,
The Comforter is come!

4 Down from on high the blessed Dove
Is come into my breast,
To witness God's eternal love;
This is my heavenly feast.

5 Glory to God the Father be,
Glory to God the Son,
Glory to God the Holy Ghost-
Glory to God alone!
