John xx. 24 to 29. The feventh appearance of Chrift was at the fea of Tiberias in Galilee, about fixty miles from Jerufalem, to feven Apostles and difciples, with whom he took bread and fish, and held a more familiar converfation than before; John xxi. 1 to 14. The time and place at which he was feen by James, are not recorded; 1 Cor. xv. 7. A ninth appearance of Jefus was at a mountain in Galilee, not far from the fea of Tiberias, where he was feen by above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part were alive when Paul wrote to the Corinthians; 1 Cor. xv. 6. Forty days after his refurrection, Jefus again met the Apostles at Jerufalem, and led them out to Bethany, from whence they faw him afcend, and a cloud received him out of their fight; Acts i. 3, 4, 9.

A few years after this, Stephen faw Jefus ; Acts vii. 55. In about a year from that time he appeared to Paul, near Damascus;. ix. 3 to 9; xxvi. 13 to 18. In this appearance, though Jesus was then in his glorified ftate, he speaks of himself as a man of Nazareth; Acts xxii. 6 to 9. The third day after this, Ananias faw Chrift ev ogauart in a vision, by whom he was fent to restore Paul's fight; ix. 9 to 18.

Acts xviii. 9. The Lord fpake to Paul di oganatos by vifion in the night, fear not, &c. xxiii. 11. The night following the Lord ftood by him, and faid, take courage, Paul, &c.

Rev. xxi. 16. I Jefus have fent mine angel, or -meffenger, to teftify unto you (John) these things in

the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, and the bright morning ftar. See Rev. i. 17, 18. Some may perhaps doubt concerning the propriety of mentioning the appearances of Jefus Chrift after his death, in this place. But even they who confider Christ as one of the persons of the Trinity, as well as they who think he was an Archangel, both believe that he dwelt in a human body while on earth, and that it was the human part of the Meffiah that appeared to different perfons after his refurrection. Nor could any other than this be distinguished and proved, after he rofe again, to be the fame perfon who had, before his death, lived in Palestine, worked miracles, taught, and fuffered on the cross.

Some inftances are mentioned under this section, of perfons appearing in vifions; but the very names are specified, and the perfons known, which differs from general vifionary objects. The word ogaua, also, is одана, used to fignify spectre or phantom, in fewer inftances in the New Testament, than it is used to denote an extraordinary or strange appearance. Inftances of the latter we have produced in the account of the transfiguration.

CHAPTER IV.

Objections to Angels, or Messengers, of God being Men who have lived upon Earth.

Objection I. The term ANGEL is often used as fynonymous with JEHOVAH, ADONAI, EL, ELOHIM, and Osos; which feems to imply a higher rank of being than Mankind. And there are feveral inftances in which Angels or Messengers of God fpeak in the name of God, which no Prophet, while living on earth, ever did.

GEN. xvi. 7, 9, 10, 11. The angel of Jehovah fpeaks in ver. 10, in the name of Jehovah; and in ver. 13, is called Jehovah and El.

xxxi. 11. The angel of God fays, ver. 13, I am 8, the God of Bethel.

xlviii. 15, 16. Ifrael bleffed Jofeph, and faid, ha Elohim, God before whom my fathers did walk; ha Elohim, the God that fed me all my life; the angel who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads, &c.

Exod. iii. 2. The angel of Jehovah is called, in ver. 4, Elohim; in ver 6, Elohee; in ver. 7, Jehovah; and by thefe different names to the 18th verfe.

Exod. xiii. 21. Jehovah went before them in a pillar of cloud, &c. Syriac, Angelus Dei. In xiv. 19, the fame is called the angel of Elohim, and the pillar of cloud.

Judg. vi. 11, 12, 20, 21, 22. The angel of Jehovah, who appeared to Gideon, is, in ver. 13, 14, called Jehovah and Adonai; and in ver. 23, Jehovah.

Judg. xiii. 21. Manoah knew that he 7, ipfe, was an angel of Jehovah; yet in the next verfe, 22, Manoah calls him Elohim.

Job xx. 15., ayyeλos, God fhall caft them (riches) out of his belly.

Hofea xii. 4. Jacob had power over the angel: ver. 3, had power with God. In the margin, wasa prince, or behaved princely. The angel in ver. 4,, is called in Gen, xxxii. 30, Elohim, God; and the place, Peniel, the face of God.

For Acts vii. 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 38, 53; fee the Introduction, and Part I. ch. i. fec. iii. fubd. 1.

Acts xii. 7, 8, 9, 10. The angel of the Lord, in ver. 17, is called rugs. And, ver. 11, the Lord hath fent his angel, and hath delivered me.

xxvii. 23. The angel of God appeared, faying, &c. Ver. 25. I believe God that it will be as it hath been told me.

To this objection, that maleak and angelos are ufed as fynonymous with the different names of the Moft High, and that angels fpeak fometimes in the name. of God; it may be replied, that WN, N, and ang, are alfo ufed as fynonymous with the differen

appellations of the Supreme Being; that these men fpeak in the name of God; and that they walk, converse, eat, and drink, before the perfons to whom they appear.

Gen. xviii. 2. Abraham lift up his eyes, and lo, three, audges, men, stood by him; ver. 16, the men. One of these is called Jehovah, ver. 1, 13, 17, 20, 22, 26, 33. In the first verse the Latin translation of the Arabic is, angelus Dei. To the fame person or perfons the term Adonai is applied in ver. 3, 27, 30, 31, 32. And in ver. 22, two of these men went toward Sodom, but Abraham ftood yet before Jehovah, who was one of these three men, that staid with Abraham, while the others went to Sodom.

Respecting this 18th chapter of Genefis, it is obfervable, that in the Hebrew these appearances are never called angels; they are called men, audges, and DWIN, in ver. 2, 16, and Jehovah and Adonai in other verses. In ver. 10, 17, 19, 21, 26, 28, 32, he or they speak in the name of God. Abraham addreffes one of them as Jehovah, who with the two others ate, drank, and refreshed themselves with Abra. ham; ver. 4 to 8. In chap. xix. two of them are called angels, and in ver. 5, 10, men DW, the third whom Abraham addreffes as Jehovah, is not mentioned in chap. xix.

For Gen. xix. 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 21, 22, 24, 29, fee Part I. ch. i. fect. iii. fubd. 2, 2.
