II. Av and alwvios are used for past limited duration, of different periods.

Αιων.

Luke i. 70. As he fpake by the mouth of his holy prophets, who have been, an' awwvos, from ancient times, or, fince the beginning of the world.

John ix. 32. Ex т8 aιwvos, from the beginning of Εκ τ8 αιώνος, the world it has not been heard, &c.

Acts iii. 21. Which God hath spoken by the mouth of his prophets, an' awvos, fince the world began, or, from ancient times.

I Cor. ii. 7. I fpeak the hidden wisdom which GOD predetermined before, rwv alwvwv, the ages, or, the world.

Ephef. iii. 9. The mystery which was hidden, απο των αιώνων, from the beginning of the world. Ephef. iii. 11. Κατα προθεσιν των αιώνων, according to the eternal purpose, or, according to the pre-difpofition of the ages. See Lock's Par. and

Rom. xiv. 25. According to the revelation of the myftery which was kept fecret, χρόνοις αιωνίοις, from the times of the ages, or, under the ancient dispenfations.

2 Tim. i. 9. The favour bestowed upon us through Jefus Chrift, προ χρόνων αιωνιων, before the times of the ages, or, before the ancient difpenfations.

Titus i. 2. Which God, who cannot lie, promised, πpo xpover arriv, before the times of the ages, or, before the ancient difpenfations.

III. Αιων and αιωνιος are applied to future
limited duration.

John viii. 35. The flave abideth not in the house

εις τον αιώνα; the fon abideth εις τον αιώνα.

flave may be difmiffed, or may depart after fix years

Exod. xxi. 6; or at the year of Jubilee, Levit. xxv, 39 to 41. The fon will die.

John xiv. 16. The Father will give you another comforter, or monitor, that he may abide with you, BIS TOV αiwvα, for ever, i. e. as long as you live.

John xiii. 8. Thou shalt not wash my feet, IS TO aiwva, for ever. Nunquam. Alfo Matt. xxi. 10.

I Cor. viii. 13. If food caufe my brother to offend, I will not eat flesh, is TOV awva, for ever, i. e. during the whole course of my life.

Ephef. ii. 7. That, Ev Tois awo, in the ages to come, i. e. in all future generations, he might show the riches of his favour.

Heb. vi. 5. The mighty works, μeλλOVTOS AIWVOS, of the fucceeding age, i. e. the Chriftian difpenfation. Comp. ii. 5; Ifaiah ix. 6.

1 Sam. iii. 13. I will judge his (Eli's) house, εws alwvos, for ever, i. e. his defcendants should be in want of bread, and die young. See ver. 32, 33, 34, 36.

Matt. xxiv. 3. What shall be the fign of thy appearance, and of the end, T8 aivos, of the age; i. e. the Jewish difpenfation.

Pfalm cxlvi. 10. The LORD fhall reign, & TOU alava, for ever, thy GOD, O Zion, from generation to generation. The laft claufe explains the first, A Hebrew parallelifm.

Eccles. i. 4. One generation paffeth away, and another cometh; but the earth abideth, 5 TON asuva, for ever, i. e. from generation to generation.

Micah iv. 7. And the LORD fhall reign over them in Mount Sion from henceforth, εως εις τον αιώνα, even for ever. Yet he has long ceased to reign there in the sense here intended.

Ecclus xlvii. 13. That they might build a house in his name, and prepare his fanctuary, εις τον αιώνα, for ever. Yet this was destroyed by the army of Titus, and has never been rebuilt.

Ecclus. xlix. 12. Jefus, the fon of Jofedek, set up a holy temple to the LORD, which was prepared, Eis dozav alwvos, for everlasting glory. Yet that has been destroyed.

Exod. xxi. 6. And he shall serve him, 815 Tov aιwva, for ever, i. e. for seven years, (v. 2,) or, to the day of the jubilee, when all fervants were freed.

Jude 25. To the only God be glory, &c. both now and, Eis waytas T85 alwvas, throughout all the ages.

Αιώνιος:

i. e.

Philem. 15. He therefore departed for a time, that thou mightest receive him aswvov, for ever, for his whole life. Comp. Exod. xxi, 6.

Gen. ix. 16. And I will look upon the bow, that I may remember, διαθηκην αιώνιον, the everlafting covenant between GOD and all flesh upon the earth. Yet the world will have an end.

Exod. xii. 14. Ye fhall keep it (the paffover) a feaft to the LORD, throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast, voμipov aiwvior, by an ordinance

for ever; i. e. throughout your generations, agreeably to the preceding clause.

Numb. xxv. 13. He fhall have it, and his feed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, or an everlasting covenant of priestood, dann αιώνια. Yet the genealogy of Phinehas and Aaron cannot now be traced. Alfo x. 8.

Gen. xvii. 13, 19. And my covenant shall be in your flesh (circumcifion) s diabnyaiwviov, for an everlasting covenant. i. e. In their generations, as it is explained v. 7.

Gen. xvii. 8. And I will give to thee, and to thy feed after thee, all the land of Canaan, s xxαXETIV alwviov, for an everlasting possession. Yet they are not now poffeffed of it.

Ecclus. xlv. 15. Mofes confecrated Aaron, and anointed him with holy oil; this was appointed unto him, is diabŋn alwvior, by an everlasting covenant, and to his feed, εν ημεραις ερανε, fo long as the heavens fhould remain, that he should minifter unto him, and execute the office of the priesthood, &c. See above Numb. xxv. 13.

IV. Av and avios are used to fignify duration

without end.

Αιων.

Matt. vi. 13. Thine is the kingdom, power, and

glory, as res alwvas, for ever.

Rom. xvi. 27. To the only wife God be glory, εις τες αιώνας, for ever.
