Theff. v. 23. forecited. Compared with Rom. vi. 13. Neither yield ye your members as inftru'ments of unrighteoufnefs unto fin: but yield your

felves unto God, as thofe that are alive from the 'dead; and your members as inftruments of righteoufnefs unto God.' The Result of that Renewing in the whole Man, is the new Creature, or new Man of Grace on us: 2 Cor. v. 17. If.

any man be in Chrift, he is a new creature: old things are paffed away, behold, all things are become new.' Eph. ii. 10. We are God's workmanship, created in Chrift Jefus unto good works, which God hath • before ordained that we should walk in them.” Chap. iv. 24. forecited.

The new Creature is formed after the Image of God. And the Image of God reftored in Sanctification, confifts in the new Qualities, of Knowledge in the Mind, Righteoufnefs in the Will, and Holiness in the Affections: Col. iii. 1o. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of him that created him.' Eph. iv. 24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteoufnefs and true holinefs.' But that reftored Image is expressed on us immediately, from Jefus Chrift the Second Adam, who is the Image of the invisible God: Gal. iv. 19. My little children, of whom I travail in birth again, until Chrift be formed in you.' I Cor. xv. 49. As we have borne the image of the earthy, we fhall also bear the image of the heavenly. Compared with Col. i. 15. The Son is the image of the invifible God.' Compare 1 Cor. xi. 7. Man is the image and glory of God;' with Gen. i. 26. The Difference between the Renewing in effectual Calling, and the Renewing in Sanctification, lies here, that in the former new vital Powers, in the latter new Qualities and Habits of Grace are infufed into us: John v. 25. Verily verily I fay up< to you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead fhall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear fhall live.' Compared with I Cor. v. 6. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Heb. viii. 10. 11. 12. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Irael after those days, faith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they fhall be to me a people. And they fhall not teach every man his neigh'bour, and every man his brother, faying, Know the Lord for all shall know me, from the leaft to the greateft. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their fins and their iniquities will I remember no more." Thefe new Qualities and Habits of Grace are, the Seeds of Repentance unto Life, and of all other faving Graces, making an entire new Creature, or new Man: 1 John iii. 9. Whofoever is born of God, doth not commit fin; for his feed remaineth in him: and he cannot fin, because he is born of God.' Acts xi. 18. Then hath God alfo to the Gentiles

granted repentance unto Life.' 2 Cor. v. 17. Eph. iv. 24. both forecited. These new Qualities and Habits of Grace are derived to us, from the Allfulness of Grace in the Man Chrift: Col. i. 19. For it pleased the Father, that in him should all

fulness dwell.' Compared with John i. 16. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for " grace.' And they are communicated from Chrift unto us, by his Spirit: John xvi. 14. 15. • The Spirit of truth fhall glorify me: for he fhall receive of mine, and fhall fhew it unto you. All things that the Father hath, are mine: there 'fore said I, that he shall take of mine, and fhall fhew it unto you.' The Effect of that Communication is, that we are fealed with the Image of Chrift, receiving Grace for Grace in Chrift, as the Wax doth Point for Point in the Seal: Eph. i. 13. In Chrift ye alfo trufted after that ye heard the word of truth, the gofpel of your falvation: in whom alle after that ye believed, ye were fealed with that Holy Spirit of promife. Compared with 2 Cor. iii. 18. But we all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." And Johni. 16. Gal. iv. 19. forecited. And by that Means our Union with Chrift iffues in our being one Spifit with Chrift, as really as Eve was one Flesh with Adam, being formed of him: 1 Cor. vi. 17. He

that is joined unto the Lord, is one spirit.' Compared with Eph. v. 30. 31. 32. For we are mem"bers of the Lord's body, of his flesh, and of his f, bones. For this cause shall a man leave his fa

ther and mother, and fhall be joined unto his wife, and they two fhall be one flesh. This is a great mystery but I fpeak concerning Chrift and the church. Now, to be one Spirit with Chrift, is to be of one and the fame fpiritual Nature with him, as his fpiritual Seed: Heb. ii. 11. For both he that fanctifieth, and they who are fanctified,

are all of one: for which caufe he is not afhamed to call them brethren. Compared with John iii, 6. That which is born of the Spirit, is fpirit.' And I liii. 10. 'When thou fhalt make his foul an offering for fin, he shall see his feed."

But though, in Sanctification, we are renewed in the whole Man, yet we are not renewed in any 'Part: but there are Remains of Corruption still indwelling in every Part: Rom. vii. 18. For I know, that in me (that is, in my flefh) dwelleth no good thing for to will is prefent with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not.' verf. 23. 24. I fee another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of fin, which is in my members. O wretched man that I am, 'who shall deliver me from the body of this death!' Eph. iv. 22. Put off concerning the former con' verfation, the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lufts.' That is to fay, there are Remains of Corruption ftill in the Mind, Will, and Affections, and in the Body by way of Communion with the unrenewed Part: 1 Cor. xiii. 9. We know in part.' Gal. v. 17. The flesh luft

eth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the 'flesh and these are contrary the one to the othe other; fo that ye cannot do the things that ye would.' Rom. vii. 14. I am carnal, fold under fin. Phil. iii. 21. The Lord Jefus Chrift fhall change our vile body, that it may be fashion❝ed like unto his glorious body.'

What enfues on thefe two contrary Principles of Grace and Corruption, being together in every Part of the renewed Man, is, the continual Combat between the Flefh and the Spirit, Gal. v. 17.

forecited. The Difference betwixt that Combat, and the Struggle against Sin, fometime found in the Unregenerate, lies here, that in the former, the Conflict is between the Flesh and the Spirit in one and the fame Part; in the latter, it is between the Flesh in one Part, lufting, and the Flesh in another Part, fearing: Rom. vii. 15. 16. That which 'I do, I allow not: for what I would, that do I " not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do. ' that which I would not, I confent unto the law, 'that it is good.' 2 Pet. ii. 15. Which have for'faken the right way, and are gone aftray, fol'lowing the way of Balaam the fon of Bofor, who,

loved the wages of unrighteoufnefs. Compared with Num. xxii. 18. 'And Balaam anfwered and 'faid unto the fervants of Balak, If Balak would give me his houfe-full of filver and gold, I eannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, 'to do lefs or more.' The immediate Iffue of the Combat between the Flefh and the Spirit, is, that neither the one Principle, nor the other, carries the Action to the Perfection it tends unto, Gal. v. 17. forecited. And in that Combat, the remaining Corruption may prevail for a Time, Rom. vii. forecited. But the renewed Part overcomes: Rom. vi. 1-4. Şin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law, but under grace.' John v. 4. Whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our 'faith.'

The State we are in, with respect to Sin and Righteoufnefs, by means of the Renewing in Sanctification, is, a State of Death unto Sin, and of Life unto Righteousness.
