THIS Work is not submitted to the public without feelings of considerble diffidence; nor yet without some hope of a serviceable contribution to the stock of Publications, with which the present generation is so amply supplied.

Several interruptions there have been, in the course of its preparation, which were occasioned chiefly by domestic and relative affliction*; and therefore the exercise of candour is respectfully desired.

The Notes have multiplied far beyond any original intention; but their number is chiefly owing to the expressed wishes of Friends, to have a liberal supply of selections from the many manuscripts of both the Father and the Son.

In compliance with repeated, solicitations also, the Lectures on Hebrew Prophecy are here published entire; and it is hoped they will not be read by any, without much improvement and satisfaction

The best thanks of the Author are due to those Friends, who have kindly furnished either Papers or Letters, from which he has with freedom and pleasure enriched this Publication.

May these imperfect endeavours to preserve the esteemed memory of the dead, be rendered, by the divine blessing, instructive and useful to the living!

*The reader who is a Parent, will excuse my noticing particularly the death of a most lovely Babe, (August 18th,) after some days of severe suffering, aged six weeks. The name of ANNE ASKEW deserves no inferior record; and to that celebrated character of Martyrological fame, the Author claims the honour of a distant relationship.-See Congreg. Mag. for 1822, p. 386.
