MEMOIRS & REMAINS

OF

J. B. JEFFERSON.

THE biography of this highly promising youth may be introduced by some preliminary considerations; as explanatory of the information to be communicated, and the sources of supply which are available for this purpose

The materials are so ample, that a judicious selection will be attended with considerable difficulty. A degree of partiality may of course be expected, from a relative and an admirer; yet it is hoped that truth and justice, with every expression of high regard, will be sacredly respected. It is proposed to attempt exhibiting the genuine character of the worthy deceased, chiefly by specimens of his own compositions; and therefore selections will be very liberally produced.

Some particulars relative to his Father may not be unsuitably introduced, as very naturally accounting for the

peculiar constitution of his own character. The resources here are also abundant; as that estimable individual left to the inheritance of his son, a large collection of manuscript books. These consist of an immense variety of "Extracts"-" Memoranda”—“ Quotidiana”-—“ Orientalia" "Hebraica"- "Horæ Arabica""--" Selections," &c.; and they are now numerically arranged,* for occasional citation and reference.

These Memoirs of the late J. B. J. will naturally comprise some notices, respecting his parentage-the circumstances and character of his education-his temporary introduction to business-his life and exercises at Collegeand his discharge of the Christian ministry. Such are the distinguishing periods of that valuable, but lamentably short life-scarcely reaching even the third of the generally accustomed portion of the days of our years."

The manuscript Remains are of a decidedly superior character, and satisfactorily prove the industry and success of his short-lived labours. They may here be specified in the order of their chronology, so far as can be ascertained; and therefore be regarded as somewhat exbibiting his progressive improvements.

* Of various sizes, and amounting to about thirty in number.
