the portraiture, or by painting, or sculpture, for we are warned against the making any sort of resemblance. In the fourth chapter and 15th verse of the book of Deuteronomy, Moses most particularly cautions the Israelites, not to make any graven image, the similitude of any figure whatever, lest they should corrupt themselves; informing them that they" saw no manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spake unto them in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:" but what saith the commandment, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

Therefore, surely, the Church which authorizes pictures and statues to be bowed down to, or even to be placed in it, let the sculpture or painting

be what it may, sanctions what is contrary to the

commandment, what is debasing to the mind, what destroys the simplicity of worship.

brethren of the Roman Catholic Church will not perhaps deem it presumption in me that I take the liberty of calling their attention to this matter:-as for my Protestant brethren, they need not to be warned by me, for they have long ago entered their protest against this idol practice: I shall therefore only remind them, that it is forbidden-that the Church of Rome may, in no wise be copied in this respect :—it is not enough that they do not worship the work of their own hands, for the commandment saith, "Thou shalt not bow down to them," yea, that they do not hold them to be a God is not an answer, for it is written, "Thou shalt not make them." In the dispensation of the gospel of Christ there is no Church pageantry that may be observed; there is no affectation, no superstition, no long prayer and repetition* demanded; no fear, but "godly fear;" no jealousy, but "godly jealousy;" no cant (methodistical); no
