CALVIN calls the crucifixion of Christ the hinge on which our salvation turns; and Luther calls it a gospel-spring opened to refresh sinners. How different the views of the Atonement held by many in the present day! How few understand or feel the ruin of the Fall, the state to which it has reduced man; hence how few feel their need of the Christ of God in all His finished work. On the contrary, each year, as it closes, reveals the solemn truth that "the enemy is coming in like a flood." Each year marks rapid strides in the progress of departure from God and His Word, both individually, ecclesiastically, and governmentally. This apostacy from the truth, under the profession of Christianity, will issue in a naked, undisguised apostacy, in which all revealed truth will be renounced and blasphemed. Who that reads his Bible aright can doubt it? Who does not see that idolatrous ecclesiasticism will culminate in infidel Antichristianism? What then is the believer's duty? To contend for the right of the written word to that place which God has assigned it as the test of truth. May the Reader bring every line of the accompanying Volume to that test; and while seeking by every means in his power to spread among his fellow-men the knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus, may he be encouraged, as he contemplates the weakness of his efforts, to stem the torrent of ungodliness, by remembering the words of good old Samuel Rutherford-" If Christ but ride upon a worm or feather His horse will neither stumble nor fall.” 6, Oakley Square, Chelsea, December 1st, 1869.
