They only know what the number of prisoners are at the time that the return is made. § The monthly returns not affigning the reafons for which foldiers are discharged, the War Office cannot, agreeable to the directions of the order of the House of Com. mons, diftinguish thofe men who are lost or difabled by wounds or fickness; the whole number difcharged are therefore ftated, in which thofe difmiffed for misbehaviour, claimed as apprentices, claimed by other corps, draughted from one regiment to another, or discharged for a variety of caufes, befides that of inability to ferve longer, are included. The prifoners of the army under these heads, are fuch as were taken by the enemy previous to the Convention of Saratoga. The men comprehended in the Convention have never been allowed to be prifoners of war; their cafualties by death and desertion, and the numbers discharged, are regularly given.
