It is matter of surprise that so few books have been composed expressly for the sick and dying, the number of such individuals being always so considerable. The Saviour said in the days of His flesh, "The poor always ye have with you" (John, xii. 8), and he might as truly have said, "The sick always ye have with you." The minister of the Gospel, who has a considerable congregation, as well as the physician who has anything of a practice at all, knows this well; for as soon as one list of the afflicted in body is concluded, either through recovery or death, another is ready to his hand. Thus the sick are always a numerous class.

Besides, they are a receptive and appreciative class. The healthy and strong are often dull and indifferent hearers and readers of the Gospel; but the sick are generally the opposite. The great question, "Wherewithal shall we appear before the Lord?" is pressed home powerfully upon their hearts, so that they are, in many instances, led to review the past portion of
