BOOK II.

ADDITIONAL HYMNS.

Perfections of God.
HYMN 1. L. M.

Creation Praising God.

HE spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heav'ns a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim.
2 The unwearied sun, from day to day,
Does his Creator's pow'r display,
And publishes to every land,
The work of an Almighty hand.
3 Soon as the evening shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale;
And, nightly, to the list'ning earth,
Repeats the story of her birth;

4 Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole. 5 What though in solemn silence all Move round this dark terrestrial ball; What though no real voice nor sound Amidst their radiant orbs be found; 6 In reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice, For ever singing as they shine, "The hand that made us is divine." HYMN 2. C. M.

Sovereignty and Decrees of God.
EEP silence-all created things,

My soul stands trembling while she sings
The honours of her God.

2 Life, death, and hell, and worlds unknown Hang on his firm decree;

He sits on no precarious throne,

Nor borrows leave-TO BE.

3 Chain'd to his throne a volume lies,

With all the fates of men.

With ev'ry angel's form and size,
Drawn by th' eternal pen.

4 His providence unfolds the book,
And makes his counsels shine;
Each op'ning leaf, and ev'ry stroke,
Fulfils some deep design.

5 Here be exalts neglected worms,
To sceptres and a crown;

And there, the following page he turns,
And treads the monarch down.
& Not Gabriel asks the reason why,
Nor God the reason gives;
Nor dares the fav'rite angel pry
Between the folded leaves.
My God, I would not long to see
My fate, with curious eyes;
What gloomy lines are writ for me,
Or what bright scenes may rise.
8 In thy fair book of life and grace,
O may I find my name,
Recorded in some humble place,
Beneath my Lord-the Lamb.

HYMN 3. C. M.

Love of God.

OME, ye that know and fear the Lord,
And lift your souls above;

Let ev'ry heart and voice accord,

To sing that God is love.

2 This precious truth his word declares,
And all his mercies prove;
Jesus, the gift of gifts, appears,
To show, that God is love.

3 Sinai, in clouds, and smoke, and fire,
Thunders his dreadful name;
But Zion sings, in melting notes,
The honors of the Lamb.

4 In all his doctrines and commands,
His counsels and designs-

In ev'ry work his hands have fram'd
His love supremely shines.

5 Angels and men the news proclaim,
Thro' earth and heaven above,
The joyful and transporting news,
That God, the Lord, is love.

TH

HYMN 4. C. M.

Goodness of God.

THY goodness, Lord, our souls confess,
Thy goodness we ado:e,

A spring whose blessings never fail,
A sea without a shore.

2 Sun, moon, and stars, thy love attest,
In ev'ry golden ray;

Love draws the curtains of the night,
And love brings back the day,
3 Thy bounty ev'ry season crowns,
With all the bliss it yields;

With joyful clusters loads the vines-
With strength'ning grain, the fields.
4 But chiefly thy compassion, Lord,
Is in the gospel seen;

There, like a sun, thy mercy shines,
Without a cloud between.

5 Pardon, acceptance, peace, and joy,
Through Jesus' name are given;
He on the cross was lifted high,
That we might reign in heaven.
HYMN 5. L. M.

Loving-kindness of God.

1 AWAKE my soul to joyful lays,

And sing the great Redeemer's praise;
He justly claims a song from me,
His loving-kindness, oh, how free!
2 He saw me ruin'd in the fall,

Yet lov'd me notwithstanding all :
He sav'd me from my lost estate,
His loving-kindness, oh, how great?
3 Tho' num'rous hosts of mighty foes,
Tho' earth and hell my way oppose,
He safely leads my soul along,
His loving-kindness, oh, how strong!
4 When trouble, like a gloomy cloud,
Has gather'd thick, and thunder'd loud,
He near my soul has always stood,
His loving-kindness, oh, how good!
5 Often I feel my sinful heart,
Prone from my Jesus to depart;
But though I have him oft forgot,
His loving-kindness changes not.
6 Soon shall I pass the gloomy vale,
Soon all my mortal pow'rs must fail;
Oh! may my last expiring breath
His loving-kindness sing in death.
7 Then let me mount, and soar away
To the bright world of endless day,
And sing with rapture, and surprise,
His loving-kindness in the skies.

HYMN 6. P. M. 6, 4.

Praise to the Trinity.

HOME, thou Almighty King,
Help us thy name to sing,
Help us to praise !
Father all glorious,

O'er all victorious,
Come and reign over us,
Ancient of days.

2 Jesus, our Lord, arise,
Scatter our enemies,

And make them fall!
Let thine almighty aid
Our sure defence be made:
Our souls on thee be stay'd:
Lord hear our call!

Come, thou incarnate Word,
Gird on thy mighty sword;
Our pray'r attend!

Come, and thy people bless,
And give thy word success;
Spirit of holiness,

On us descend!

4 Come, holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bea
In this glad hour!
Thou, who almighty art,
Now rule in ev'ry heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of pow'r.

5 To the great ONE in THREE,
The highest praises be,
Hence evermore !
His sov'reign majesty,
May we in glory see,
And to eternity

Love and adore.

Advent of Christ.

HYMN 7. C. M.

Nativity of Christ.

[ORTALS, awake, with angels join,
And chant the solemn lay :

Joy, love, and gratitude, combine
To hail th' auspicious day.

2 In heav'n the rapt'rous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Through all the shining legions ran,

And strung and tun'd the lyre,

3 Swift, through the vast expanse, it flew, And loud the echo roll'd;

The theme, the song, the joy, was new, "Twas more than heav'n could hold. 4 Down through the portals of the sky Th' impetuous torrent ran ; And angels flew, with eager joy, To bear the news to man.

5 Hark! the cherubic armies shout, And glory leads the song;

1

Good will and peace are heard throughout
Th' harmonious heav'nly throng.

HYMN 8, P. M. 11, 10.

Star in the East.

BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the

morning,

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 2 Cold on his cradle, the dew-drops are shining; Low lies his bed with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore him, in slumber reclining, Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all. 3 Say, shall we yield him in costly devotion, Odors of Edom, and off'rings divine, Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gold would his favors secure ; Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the pray'rs of the poor. 5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. HYMN 9. L. M.

1

The Star of Bethlehem.

WHEN marshal'd on the nightly plain,

The glitt'ring host bestud the sky;
One star alone of all the train,

Can fix the sinner's wand'ring eye.

2 Hark! hark! to God the chorus breaks,
From ev'ry host, from ev'ry gem:
But one alone the Saviour speaks,
It is the star of Bethlehem.

3 Once on the raging seas I rode,

The storm was loud, the night was dark,
