The laws of murder.

CHA P. XXXV.

Fight and forty cities given to the Leviter:
6fix of them to be cities of refuge. 9 The
laws concerning murder.

AND the Rapake unto Mofes in the
plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho,
faying,

2 Command the children of Ifrael, that
they give unto the Levites of the inheritance
of their postethion cities to dwell in; and ye
fhall give alfo unto the Levites fuburbs for
the cities round about them.

3 And the cities thall they have to dwell in, and the fuburbs of them shall be for their cat. tle, and for their goods, and for all their beats.

4 And the fuburbs of the cities which ye fhall give unto the Levites, ballreach from the wall of the city and outward, a thousand cubits round about.

And ye that measure from without the city on the caft fide two thoufand cubits, and on the fouth fide two thoufand cubits, and on the weft fide two thousand cubits, and on the north fide two thousand cubits; and the city all be in the midft: this shall be to them the fuburbs of the cities.

6 And among the cities which ye thall give unto the Levites there ball be fix cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the man flayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye fhall add forty and two cities.

7 So all the cities which ye thall give to the Levites fall be forty and eight cities: them ball ye give with their fuburbs.

8 And the cities which ye shall give ball be of the poffeffion of the children of Ifrael from them that have many ye fhall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one fhall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheritech.

9 And the LORD fpake unto Mofes, faying, 10 Speak unto the children of Ifrael, and fay unto them, When ye be come over Jot. dan into the land of Canaan;

11 Then ye thall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the flayer may flee thither, which killeth any perfon at una.

wares.

12 And they fhall be unto you cities for re. fuge from the avenger; that the man-layer die not, until he ftand before the congrega tion in judgment.

13 And of thefe cities which ye shall give, fix cities thall ye have for refuge.

14 Ye thall give three cities on this fide Jordan, and three cities thall ye give in the fand of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.

15 Thefe fix cities fhall be a refuge, both for the children of Ifrael, and for the firan. ger, and for the fojourner among them; that every one that killeth any perfon unawares may flee thither.

16 And if he fmite him with an inftrument of iron, fo that he die,) he is a murderer: the murderer thall furely be put to death.

17 And if he fmite him with throwing a ftone, (wherewith he may die,) and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer fhall furely be put to death.

18 Or if he fmite him with an hand-weapon of wood, (wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer fhall furely be put to death.

No fatisfaction for murder. NUMBERS.

the murderer: when he meeteth him he shall Stay him.

20 But if he thruft him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;

21 Orin enmity fmite him with his hand that he die: he that fmote bim shall furely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer when he mceteth him.

22 But if he thraft him fuddenly without enmity, or have caft upon him any thing without laying of wait;

23 Or wiany ftone wherewith a man may die, feeing him not, and caft it upon him that he die, and was not his enemy, neither fought his harm :

24 Then the congregation thall judge beAween the flayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

25 And the congregation thall deliver the Alayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation thall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he thall abide in it unto the death of the high prieft, which was anointed with the holy off. 26 But if the flayer fhall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;

27 And the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the flayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:

28 Becaufe he thould have remained in the vity of his refuge until the death of the high prieft: but after the death of the high priest the dayer thall return into the land of his poffeffion.

29 So there things fhall be for a ftatute of Judgment unto you, throughout your generations, in all your dwellings.

30 Whofo killeth any perfon, the murderer hall be put to death by the mouth of witneffes: but one witnefs fhall not teftify against any perfon to cause him to die.

31 Moreover, ye thai take no fatisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he thall be furely put to death.

32 And ye hall take no fatisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the pricft.

33 So ye shall not poilute the land wherein ye are; tor blood it defileth the land and the land cannot be cleanfed of the blood that is fhed therein, but by the blood of him that thed it.

34 Defile not therefore the land which ye fall inhabit, wherein I dwell: for I the LORD dwell among the children of Ifrael.

Zekpbebad's daughters warriage. AND the chief fathers of the families of

the children of Gilead, the fon of Ma chir, the fon of Manaffeh, of the families of the fons of Jofeph, came near, and spake be fore Mofes, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Ifrael;

2 And they faid, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Ifrael: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inherit ance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.

3 And if they be married to any of the fons of the other tribes of the children of Ifrael; then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received; fo fhall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.

4 And when the jubile of the children of Ifrael thall be, then fall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe where unto they are received: fo fhall their inhe ritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.

5 And Mofes commanded the children of Ifrael according to the word of the LORD, faying, The tribe of the fons of Jofeph hath faid well.

6 This is the thing which the LORD doth command concerning the daughters of Ze. lophehad, faying, let them marry to whom they think beft; only to the family of the tribe of their father thall they marry:

7 So fhall not the inheritance of the chil dren of Ifrael remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Ifrael hall keep himfelf to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

8 And every daughter that poffefeth m inheritance in any tribe of the children of Ifrael, fhall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Ifrael may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.

9 Neither fhall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; bu every one of the tribes of the children of Ifrae: fhall kap himfelf to his own inheritance.

10 Even as the LORD commanded Mofes, fo did the daughters of Zelophehad:

11 For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zel phehad, were married unto their father brothers' fons.

12 And they were married into the fa lies of the fons of Manaffeh, the fon of Jofept and their inheritance remained in the tribes the family of their father.

In Edrei,

5 On this fide Jordan, in the land of Moab,
began Mofes to declare this law, faying,
The LORD our God fpake unto us in
Horeb, faying, Ye have dwelt long enough in
this mount:

Turn you, and take your journey, and go
to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all
the places nigh thereunto in the plain, in the
hills, and in the vale, and in the fouth, and
by the fea-fide, to the land of the Canaanites,
and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the
river Euphrates.

8 Behold, I have fet the land before you: go in and poffefs the land which the LORD fware unto your fathers, Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob, to give unto them, and to their feed

after them.

9And I pake unto you at that time, fay. ing, I am not able to bear you myself alone. 13 The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the ftars of heaven for multitude.

11(The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times fo many more as ye are, and blefs you, as he hath promifed you!) 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your ftrife? 13 Take ye wife men and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

14 And ye anfwered me, and faid, The thing which thou hatt fpoken is good for us to do. 15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wife men, and known, and made them heads over you,captains over thoufands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. 16 And 1 charged your judges at that time, faying, Hear the caufer between your bre. thren, ami julge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.

17 Ye shall not refpect perfons in judgment, bar ye thall hear the fmall as well as the great; rethall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God's: and the caufe that is ton hard for you, bring it unto me, and I

will hear it.

18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye fhould do.

19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye faw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Ka desh-barnea.

20 And I faid unto you, Ye are come un. to the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.

21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath fet the and before thee: go up and poffefs it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath faid unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and faid, We will fend men before s, and they shall fearch us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must

24 And they turned, and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Ef. col, and fearched it out

25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.

26 Notwithstanding, ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandnsent of the LORD your God.

37 And ye murmured in your tents, and faid, Becaufe the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to deftroy us.

28 Whither fhall we go up? Our brethren have difcouraged our heart, faying, The peo ple is greater and taller than we; the cities are great, and walled up to heaven; and, moreover, we have feen the for.s of the Ana kims there.

29 Then I faid unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

30 The LORD your God, which goeth be fore you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your

eyes ;

3 And in the wilderness, where thou haft feen how that the LORD thy God bare thee as a man doth bear his fon, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.

32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,

33 Who went in the way before you, to fearch you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night to thew you by what way ye fhould go, and in a cloud by day.

34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and fware, faying,

35 Surely there shall not one of thefe mnen of this evil generation fee that good land which I fware to give unto your fathers;

36 Save Caleb the fon of Jephunneh, he fhall fee it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his chil dren, because he hath wholly followed the

LORD.

37 Alfo the LORD was angry with me for your fakes, faying, Thou alfo fhalt not go in thither.

38 But Jofua the fon of Nun, which ftandeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him; for he thali caufe Ifrael to inherit it.

39 Moreover, your little ones, which ye faid fhould be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall pof fefs it.

to But as for you, turn ye, and take your journey into the wilderness, by the way of the Red fea.

41 Then ye anfwered and faid unto me, We have finned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42 And the LORD faid unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight, for I am not among you; left ye be imiiten before your enemies Σ
