Chap. xvi, ites, left I destroy you with them: for ye 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly deftroyed all the people with the edge of the fword. 9 But Saul and the people fpared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly deftroy them: but every thing that was vile and refufe that they defroyed utterly. 10 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, faying, 11 It repenteth me that I have fet up Saul to be king; for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. 12 And when Samuel rofe early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, faying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he fet him up a place, and is gone about, and paffed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13 And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said unto him, Bleed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. 14 And Samuel faid, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which 1 hear? 15 And Saul faid, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people fpared the best of the theep and of the oxen to facrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16 Then Samuel faid unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath faid to me this night. And he faid unto him, Say on. in thine own fight, waft thou not made the And Samuel faid, When thou waft little head of the tribes of Ifrael, and the LORD anointed thee king over Ifrael? 18 And the LORD fent thee on a journey, and faid, Go, and utterly deftroy the finners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be confumed. 19 Wherefore then didft thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didit fee upon the fpoil, and didft evil in the fight of the LORD? 20 And Saul faid unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD fent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalck, and have utterly deftroyed the Amalekites. 21 But the people took of the fpoil, fheep and oxen, the chief of the things which fhould have been utterly deftroyed, to facrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. 22 and Samuel faid, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and facrifices as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than facrifice; and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the fin of witchcraft, and tubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry: because thou hatt rejected the word of the LORD, he hath alfo rejected thee from being king. 24¶ And Saul faid unto Samuel, I have finned: for I have tranfgreffed the command. He fpareh Agag ment of the LORD, and thy word; because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my fin, and turn again with me, that I may wor thip the LORD." 26 And Samuel faid unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou haft rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Ifrael. 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28 And Samuel faid unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Ifrael from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 29 And alfo the Strength of Ifrael will not lie, nor repent: for he is not a man, that he thould repent. 30 Then he faid, I have finned; yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Ifrael, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD. 32 Then faid Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites: and Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitternefs of death is paft. 33 And Samuel faid, As thy fword hath made women childless, fo thall thy mother be childless among women And samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. 34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his houfe to Gibeah of Saul, 35 And Samuelcame no more to fce Saul until the day of his death; nevertheless, Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Ifrael. CHAP. XVI. Samuel fent by God, under pretence of a facrifice, cometh to Beth-lebem, &c. AND the LORD said to Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, feeing I have rejected him from reigning over Ifrael? Fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will fend thee to Jeffe the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his fons. 2 And Samuel faid, How can I go? If Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD faid, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to facrifice to the LORD. 3 And call Jeffe to the facrifice, and I will fhew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4 And Samuel did that which the LORD fpake, and came to Beth-lehem: and the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and faid, Comeft thou peaceably? 5 And he faid, Peaceably: 1 am come to facrifice unto the LORD; fanctify yourselves, and come with me to the facrifice. And he fanctified Jeffe and his fons, and called them to the facrifice. 6 And it came to pass when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and faid, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him. 7 But the LORD faid unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his fature; becaufe I have retufed him: for the LORD feeth not as man feeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. 8 Then Jeffe called Abinadab, and made Samuel anointeth David. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chofen this. 10 Again, Jeffe made feven of his fons to pafs before Samuel. And Samuel faid unto Jeffe, The LORD hath not chofen thefe. II And Samuel faid unto Jeffe, Are here all thy children? And he faid, There remain. eth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel faid unto Jeffe, Send and fetch him; for we will not fit down till he come hither. 12 And he fent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD faid, Arife, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rofe up, and went to Ramah. 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. 15 And Saul's fervants faid unto him, Behold now, an evil fpirit from God troubleth thee. 16 Let our lord now command thy fervants, which are before thee, to feek out a man who is a cunning player on an harp: and it thall come to pafs, when the evil fpirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou thalt be well. 17 And Saul faid unto his fervants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. 18 Then answered one of the fervants, and faid, Behold, I have feen a fon of Jeffe the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant m an, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely perfon, and the LORD is with him. 19 Wherefore Saul fent meffengers unto jeffe, and faid, Send me David thy fon, which is with the sheep. 20 And Jeffe took an afs laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and fent them by David his fon unto Saul. 21 And David came to Saul, and ftood be. fore him and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour-bearer. 22 And Saul fent to Jeffe, faying, Let David, pray thee, ftand before me: for he hath found favour in my fight. 23 And it came to pafs, when the oil pirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand fo Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. CHAP. XVII. The armies of the Ifraelites and Philifines being ready to battle, 4 Goliath cometh proudly forth to challenge a combat: 12 David accepteth the challenge. Now, the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shockoh, and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. 2 And Saul and the men of lfrael were ga. thered together, and pitched by the val. ley of Elah, and fet the battle fa array a. gainst the Philigines, Goliath': challengt, 3 And the Philiftines flood on a mountain on the one fide, and Ifrael ftood on a moun tain on the other fide: and there was a val. ley between them. 4. And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philiftines, named Goliath of Gath, whofe height was fix cubits and a fpan. And he had an helmet of brafs upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail: and the weight of the coat was five thousand fhekels of brafs. 6 And he had greaves of brafs upon his legs, and a target of brafs between his thoulders. 7 And the staff of his spear was like a wea ver's beam, and his fpear's head weighed fix hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a fhield went before him. 8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Ifrael, and faid unto them, Why are ye come out to fet your battle in array ? Am not I a Philiftine, and ye fervants to Saul? Choofe you a man for you, and let him come down to me. 9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your fervants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then fhall ye be our fervants, and ferve us. 10 And the Philiftine faid, I defy the armies of Ifrael this day; give me a man that we may fight together. 11 When Saul and all Ifrael heard thofe words of the Philiftine, they were difmayed.. and greatly afraid. 12 Now David was the fon of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah, whofe name was Jeffe; and he had eight fons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul. 13 And the three eldeft fons of Jefle went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three fons that went to the battle were Eliab the first-born; and next unto him Abi. nadab; and the third Shammah. 14 And David was the youngeft: and the three eldeft followed Saul." 15 But David went, and returned from Saul, to feed his father's theep at Beth-lehem. 16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and prefented himself forty days. now for thy brethren an ephah of this parch17 And Jeffe faid unto David his fon, Take ed corn, and thefe ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren: 18 And carry thefe ten cheefes unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge. or Ifrael, were in the valley of Elah, fight19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men ing with the Philistines. 20 And David rofe up early in the morn ing, and left the theep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jeffe had commanded him : and he came to the trench as the hoft was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle. the battle in array, army againft army. of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the there came up the champion (the Philiftine 23 And as he talked with them, behold, of Gath, Goliath by name) out of the armies of the Philistines, and fpake according to David accepteth it, Chap. xvii. the fame words: and David heard them. 24 And all the men of Ifrael, when they faw the man, fled from him, and were fore afraid. 25 And the men of Ifraei faid, Have ye feen this man that is come up? For who is this uncircumcifed Philiftine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? 27 And the people anfwered him after this manner, faying, So thall it be done to the man that killeth him. 28 And Eliab his eldeft brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he faid, Why cameft thou down hither? And with whom haft thou left thofe few theep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naugh tinefs of thine heart: for thou art come down that thou mighteft fee the battle., 29 And David faid, What have I now done? Is there not a caufe? 30 And he turned from him towards another, and fpake after the fame manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner. 31 And when the words were heard which David fpake, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he fent for him. 32 And David faid to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him: thy fervant will go and fight with this Philiftine. 33 And Saul faid to David, Thouart not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David faid unto Saul, Thy fervant kept his father's theep, and there came a lion and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock; 35 And I went out after him, and fmote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arofe against me, I caught him by his beard, and fmote him, and flew him. 36 Thy fervant new both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcifed Philiftine thall be as one of them, feeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. 37 David faid moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philiftine. And Saul faid unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. 38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brafs upon his head; alfo he armed him with a coat of mail. 39 And David girded his fword upon his armour, and he affayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David faid unto Saul, I cannot go with thefe; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. 40 And he took his ftaff in his hand, and chofe him five fmooth ftones out of the brook, and put them in a thepherd's bag which he had, even in a ferip, and his fling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine. 4) And the Philistine came on, and drew and flayeth Goliath. near unto David; and the man that bare the fhield went before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and faw David, he difdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43 And the Philiftine faid unto David, Am fa dog, that thou comeft to me with ftaves? And the Philistine curfed David by his gods. 44 And the Philiftine faid to David, Come to me, and I will give thy fleth unto the fowls of the air, and to the beafts of the field. 45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comeft to me with a fword, and with a fpear, and with a shield; but I come to theg in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Ifrael, whom thou haft defied. 46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will fmite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the car. caffes of the hoft of the Philiftines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beafts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Ifrael. 47 And all this affembly thall know that the LORD faveth not with fword and fpear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. 48 And it came to pafs, when the Philiftine arofe, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hafted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and flang it, and (mote the Philistine in his forehead, that the ftone funk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philiftine with a fling and with a ftone, and fm te the Philiftine, and flew him; but there was no fword in the hand of David. SI Therefore David ran, and food upon the Philistine, and took his fword, and drew it out of the theath thereof, and flew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philiftines faw their champion was dead, they fled. 52 And the men of Ifrael and of Judah arofe, and fhouted, and purfued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron: and the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 53 And the children of Ifrael returned from chafing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54 And David took the head of the Philiftine and brought it to Jerufalem: but he put his armour in his tent. 55 And when Saul faw David go forth against the Philistine, he faid unto Abner, the captain of the hott, Abner, whofe fon is this youth? And Abner faid, As thy foul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 56 And the king faid, Enquire thou whee fon the ftripling is. 57 And as David returned from the flaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Phili tine in his hand. 58 And Saul faid to him, Whofe fon art thou, thou young man? SAMUEL. 1 Jonathan loveth David: 5 Saul envieth bis praife, 10 feeketh to kill him in bis fury, 12 feareth him for his good fuccefs: 17 be offereth him his daughter for a snare. And David went out whitherfoever Saul fent him, and behaved himfeif wifely and Saul fet him over the men of war; and he was accepted in the fight of all the people, and alfo in the fight of Saul's fervants. 6 And it came to pafs, as they came, when David returned from the flaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Ifrael, finging and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with Inftruments of mufick. 7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath flain his thoufands, and David his ten thousands. 8 And Saul was very wroth, and the faying difpleafed him; and he faid, They have afcribed unto David ten thoufands, and to me theyve afcribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? 9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. 10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophefied in the midft of the houfe; and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. ! XIX. 1 Jonathan discloseth bis father's purpose to kill David; 4 be perfuadeth his father to reconciliation. 8 by reason of David's good fuccefs in a new war, Saul's malicious rage breaketh out against him. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, AND Saul fpake to Jonathan his fon, and and made him his captain over a thoufand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David behaved himself wifely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him. 15 Wherefore when Saul faw that he behav. ed himself very wifely, he was afraid of him, 16 But all Ifrael and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them. 17 And Saul faid to David, Behold my el. der daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife; only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles: for Saul faid, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of 1 Philistines be upon him. 18 And David faid unto Saul, Who am I? ad what is my life, or my father's family in Ifrael, that I should be fon-in-law to the king! 19 But it came to pafs, at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, thould have been given to David, that the was given unto Adria the Meholathite to wife. zo And Michal, Saul's daughter,loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleafed him. a1 And Saul faid, I will give him her, that the to all his fervants, that they should kill David. 2 But Jonathan, Saul's fon, delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, faying, Saul my father feeketh to kill thee. And Michal anfwered Saul, He faid unto me, Let me go; why fhould I kill thee? 18 So David fled, and efcaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him: and he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth. 19 And it was told Saul, faying, Behold David is at Naioth in Ramah. 20 And Saul fent meffengers to take David: and when they faw the company of the prophets prophefying, and Samuel ftanding as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they alio prophefied. 21 And when it was told Saul, he fent other meifengers, and they prophesied likewife. And Saul fent meffengers again the third time, and they prophefied alfo. 22 Then went he alfo to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu; and he asked, and faid, Where are Samuel and David? And one faid, Behold they be at Naioth in Ramah. 23 And he went thither to Naioth in Raman: and the Spirit of God was upon him alfo, and he went on and prophefied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 And he tripped off his clothes alfo, and prophefied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day, and all that night. Wherefore they fay, Is Saul alfo among the prophets? CHAP. XX. David confulteth with Jonathan for his fafety: 11 their covenant renewed by oath. 24 Saul,miffing David, feeketh to kill Jonathan. ND David fled from Naioth And Deane and aid before Jonathan, David confulteth Fonathan. What have done? What is mine iniquity I and what is my fin before thy father, that he feeketh my lite? 2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou fhalt not die: behold, my father will do no thing, either great or fmall, but that he will fhew it me: and why thould my father hide this thing from me It is not fo. 3 And David fware moreover, and faid, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he faith, Let not Jonathan know this, left he be grieved: but tru ly, as the LORD liveth, and as thy foul liveth, there is but a ftep between me and death. 4 Then faid Jonathan unto David, Whatfoever thy foul defireth, I will even do it for thee. 5 And David faid unto Jonathan, Behold, to-morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to fit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unte the third day at even. 6 If thy father at all mifs me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me, that he might run to Beth-lehem his city; for there is a yearly facrifice there for all the family. 7 If he fay thus, It is well; thy fervant fhall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be fure that evil is determined by him. 8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy fervant; for thou haft brought thy fer. vant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, flay me thy felf; for why fhouldeft thou bring me to thy father? 9 And Jonathan faid, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were deter mined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee? 10 Then faid David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me or what if thy father answer thee roughly!
