God encourageth Joshua:

JOSHUA. tell me now what thou haft done; hide it not from me.

20 And Achan anfwered Joshua, and faid, Indeed I have finned against the LORD God of Ifrael, and thus and thus have I done: 21 When I faw among the fpoils a goodly Babylonith garment, and two hundred thekels of filver, and a wedge of gold of fifty thekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my text, and the filver under it. 22 so Johua fent meifengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the fiver under it.

23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joft.ua, and unto all the children of Ifrael, and laid them out before the LORD.

24 And Joshua, and all Ifrael with him, took Achan the ton of Zerah, and the filver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his fons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his affes, and his theep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

25 And Jothua faid, Why haft thou troubled us: the LORD thall trouble thee this day. And all ifrael toned him with tones, and burned them with fire, after they had toned them with ftones.

26 And they raifed over him a great heap of ftones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fiercenefs of his anger: wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor unto this day.

CHAP. VIII.

Godencourageth Joshua. 3 The fratagem whereby Ai was taken. 30 Joshua buildeth an altar, 32 writeth the law on ftones, 33 propoundeth bleflings and curfings. AND the LORD faid unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou difmayed; take all the people of war with thee, and arife, go up to Ai, ice I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.

2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king, as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the fpoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourfelves. Lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 So Joshua arofe, and all the people of war, to go up againit Ai: and Joshua chofe out thirty thoufand mighty men of valour, and fent them away by night.

4 And he commanded them, aying, Behold, ye thall lie in wait againft the city, even behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pafs, when they come out against us as at the firit, that we will flee before them,

6 (For they will come out after us,) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will fay, They flee before us, as at the first: there

fore we will fee before them.

7 Then ye thall rife up from the ambush, and feize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 and it thall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye thall fet the city on fire: accord ing to the commandment of the LORD fhall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

9 Jodia therefore fent them forth;

His fratagem againf, Ai. and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the weft fide of Al: but Joshua lodged that night among the peo ple.

10 And Joshua rofe up early in the morsing, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Ifrael, before the people to Ai.

it And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north fide of Ai: now there was a val. ley between them and Ai.

12 And he took about five thousand men, and fet them to lie in ambush between Beth-ei and Ai, on the weft fide of the city.

13 And when they had fet the people, even all the hoit that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the weft of the city, Joshua went that night into the midft of the valley.

Ai.

37 Only the cattle, and the fpoil of that city, Ifrael took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD, which he commandet Joshua.

18 And Jahua burnt Ai, and made it an heap forever, even a defolation unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until even tide: and as foon as the fun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcals down from the tree, and caft it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raife thereon a great heap of tones, that re maineth unto this day.

30 Then Jothus built an altar unto the LORD God of Ifrael in mount Ebal;

31 As Moles the fervant of the LORD commanded the children of Ifrael, as it is written in the book of the law of Mofes, An altar of whole ftones, over which no man hath lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burntofferings unto the LORD, and facrificed peaceofferings.

32 And he wrote there upon the ftones a copy of the law of Mofes, which he wrote in the prefence of the children of Ifrael.

33 And all Ifrael, and their elders, and of ficers, and their judges, ftood on this fide the ark, and on that fide, before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant at the LORD, as well the stranger as he that was born among them; half of them over againft mount Gerizim, and half of them over againit mount Ebal; as Mofes the fervant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Ifrael.

34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the bleffings and curlings, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Mofes commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Ifrael, with the wemen, and the little ones, and the ftrangers that were converfant among them.

CHAP. IX.

The kings combine again ifrael. 3 The Gi. besmites obtaining a league by craft, 6 are condemned to perpetual bondage. AND it came to pafs, when all the kings which were on this fide Jordan, in the Mills, and in the vallies, and in all the coafts of the great fea over againft Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebufite, heard thereof,

2 That they gathered themfelves together to fight with Joshua, and with Ifrael, with

one accord.

35 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and

to Ai,

4 They did work wildly, and went and made as if they had been ambaffadors; and teok old facks upon their affes, and wine-botties, off, and rent, and bound up;

7 And the men of Ifrael faid unto the Hi. vites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how hall we make a league with you?

8 And they faid unto Jothua, We are thy fervants. And Jothua faid unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

9 And they faid unto him, From a very far country thy fervants are come, because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

Jo And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Hethbon, and to Ổg king of Bathan, which was at Athtaroth.

11 Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our country, spake to us, faying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and fay unto them, We are your fervants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12 This our bread we took hot for our provifion out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13 And thefe bottles of wine which we filled, were new; and behold they be rent, and thefe our garments and cur thoes are become old by reafon of the very long jour ney.

14 And the men took of their victuals, and afked not counfel at the mouth of the LORD.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them to let them live and the princes of the congregation fware unto them.

16 And it came to pafs at the end of three days, after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neigh bours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 And the children of Ifrael journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

18 And the children of Ifrael fmote them not, becaufe the princes of the congregation had fworn unto them by the LORD God of Ifrael. And all the congregation murmured against the princes..

19 But all the princes faid unto all the congregation, We have fworn unto them by the LORD God of Ifrael: now, therefore, we may not touch them.

20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, left wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we fware unto them.

21 And he princes faid unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congre gation; as the princes had promised

them.

22 And Jothua called for them, and he fpake unto them, faying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, faying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23 Now, therefore, ye are curfed; and there fhall none of you be freed from being bond. men, and hewers of wood and drawers of was ter for the houfe of my God.

1 Five kings war against Gibeon: 6 Joshua refcueth it. 12 The fun and moon fland fill at the word of Jofua.

Now it came to pafs, when Adoni-zedec king of Jerufalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly deftroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, fo he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Ifrael, and were among them;

2 That they feared greatly, because Gibe on was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and becaufe it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 Wherefore Adoni-zedec king of Jerufa lem fent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachith, and unto Debir king of Eglon, faying,

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may fmite Gibeon; for it hath made peace with Jofhua, and with the children of Ifrael.

5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerufalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachith, the king of Eglon, gathered themfelves together, and went up, they and all their hoffs, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war againft it.

6And the men of Gibeon fent unto Jofhua to the camp to Gilgal, faying, Slack not thy hand from thy fervants; come up to us quickly, and fave us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 So Jofhua afcended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand: there fhall not a man of theni tand before thee.

9 Joshua therefore came unto them fudden ly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

10 And the LORD difcomfited them before Ifrael, and flew them with a great flaughter at Gibeon, and chafed them along the way that foeth up to Beth-horon, and fmote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

II And it came to pafs, as they fled from before Ifrael, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD caйt down great tones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hail-ftones than they whom the children of Ifrael flew with the fword.

12¶Then fpake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amo rites before the children of Ifrael, and he

14 And there was no day like that before it, or after it, that the LORD hearkened un. to the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Ifrael.

15¶And Joshua returned, and all Ifrael with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 But thefe five kings fled, and hid them. felves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 And it was told Jothua, faying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

18 And Joshua faid, Roll great ftones upod the mouth of the cave, and fet men by it for to keep them;

19 And flay ye not, but purfue after your enemies, and fmite the hindmoft of them; fuffer them not to enter into their cities; for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 And it came to pafs, when Jofhua and the children of Ifrael had made an end of flay. ing them with a very great flaughter, till they were confumed, that the reft which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

21 And all the people returned to the camp to Jofhua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of

Ifrael,

22 Then faid Jofhua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out thofe five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 And they did fo, and brought forth thofe five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerufalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachiin, and the king of Eglon.

24 And it came to pafs, when they brought out thofe kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Ifrael, and faid unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of thefe kings. And they came neat, and put their feet upon the necks of them."

25 And Jofhua faid unto them, Fear not, nor be difmayed, be ftrong, and of gond courage: for thus fhall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 And afterward Jofhua fmote them, and flew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 And it came to pafs, at the time of the going down of the fun, that Joshua com manded, and they took them down of the trees, and caft them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great Rones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.

28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and the king thereof he utterly defroyed, them, and all the fouls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Je richo.

31 And the LORD delivered Lachith into the band of Ifrael, which took it on the fe. cond day, and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and all the fouls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachith: and Joshua fmote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 And from Lachith Joshua paffed unto Eglon, and all Ifrael with him, and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 And they took it on that day, and fmote it with the edge of the fword; and all the fouls that were therein he utterly deftroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachith.

36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all lirael with him, unto Hebron, and they fought against it:

37 And they took it, and fmote it with the edge of the word, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the fouls that were therein: he left none remaining, (according to all that he had done to Eglon,) but deffroyed it utterly, and all the fouls that

were therein.

38 And Joshua returned, and all Ifrael with him, to Debir; and fought against it: 39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they fmote them with the edge of the fword, and utterly de. troyed all the fouls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, fo he did to Debir, and to the king thereof, as he had done alfo to Libnah, and to

her king.

40 So Jofua fmote all the country of the hills, and of the fouth, and of the vale, and of the fprings, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Ifrael com. manded.

41 And Joshua fmote them from Kadefh. barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Gothen even unto Gibeon.

42 And all thefe kings, and their land, did Joshua take at one time; because the LORD God of Ifrael fought for Ifrael.

43 And Joshua returned, and all Ifrael with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

5 And when all thefe kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight again&t Ifrael.

6 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow about this time will I deliver them up all flain before Ifrael:thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom fuddenly, and they fell upon them.

8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Ifrael, who fmote them, and chafed them unto great Zidon, and unto Mizrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh east ward; and they fmote them, until they left them none remaining.

9 And Jofhua did unto them as the LORD bade him he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua at that time turned back and took Hazor, and fmote the king thereof with the fword: for Hazor before-time was the head of all thofe kingdoms.

11 And they fmote all the fouls that were therein with the edge of the fword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe; and he burnt Hazor with fire.

Iz And all the cities of thofe kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and fmote then with the edge of the fword, and he utterly deftroyed them, as Mofes the fer vant of the LORD commanded.

13 But as for the cities that flood ftill in their ftrength, Ifrael burned none of them, fave Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

14 And all the fpoil of thefe cities, and the cattle, the children of Ifrael took for a prey unto themfelves: but every man they fmote with the edge of the fword, until they had deftroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

15 As the LORD commanded Mofes his fervant, fo did Mofes command Joshua, and fo did Jofhua: he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Mofes.

16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the fouth country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Ifrael, and the valley of the fame;

17 Even from the mount Halak, that go. eth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad, in the valley of Lebanon, under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and fmote them, and flew them.

18 Joshua made war a long time with all

thofe kings.

19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Ifrael, fave the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon; all biber they took in battle.

21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains; from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Ifrael: Joshua deftroyed them utterly with their cities.

22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Ifrael; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Afhdod, there remained.
