4 Then fpake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live ter ever: tell thy fervants the dream, and we will thew the interpretation.

5 The king anfwered and fail to the Chaldeans, the thing is gone from me: it ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses thall be made a dunghill.

But if ye fhew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye tha!! receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: there. Jore thew me the aream, and the interpretation thereof.

7 They anfwered again and faid, Let the ing tell his fervants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.

8 The king anfwered and faid, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, becaufe ye fee the thing is gone from me.

9 Bin if ye will not make known unto me Che dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to fpeak before me till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I fhall know that ye can flew me the interpretation there

of.

10 The Chaldeans anfwered before the king, and faid, There is not a man upon the earth that can thew the king's matter: there. fore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that aked fuch things at any magician, or aftrolo. ger, or Chaldean.

11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can thew 1: before the king, except the gods, whofe dwelling is not with flesh.

12 For this caufe the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to defroy all the wife men of Babylon.

13 And the decree went forth that the wife en thould he flain; and they fought Daniel and his fellows to be dain.

14 Then Daniel anfwered with counfel and wifdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to flay the wife men of Babylon:

15 He answered and faid to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree fo hatty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel,

16 Then Daniel went in, and defired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would fhew the king the interpretation.

17 Then Daniel went to his houfe, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mihael, and Azariah his companions:

18 That they would defire mercies of the GOD of heaven concerning this fecret; that Daniel and his fellows thould not perish with the rest of the wife men of Babylon.

Then was the fecret revealed unto Daniel in a night vifion. Then Daniel blef. fed the God of heaven.

20 Baniel answered and faid, Bleffed be the rame of God for ever and ever: for wifiom and might are his:

Daniel findeth it.

21 And he changeth the times and the feafons: he removeth kings, and fetteth up kings: he giveth wifdom unto the wife, and knowledge to them that know under. ftanding:

22 He revealeth the deep and fecret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

23 I thank thec, and praife thee, O thou God of my fathers, who haft given me wildom and might, and haft made known unto me now what we desired of thee: lor thou haft now made known unto us the king's matter.

24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Ariech," whom the king had ordained to de troy the wife men of Babylon; he went and faid thus unto him; Denroy not the wife men of Babylon: bring me in betore the king, and I will thew unto the king the interpretation.

25 Then Aricch brought in Daniel before the king in hatte, and faid thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the in. terpretation.

26 The king anfwered and faid to Da niel, whofe name was Beltehazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have feen, and the interpretation thereof?

27 Daniel anfwered in the prefence of the king, and faid, The fecret which the king hath demanded cannot the wife men, the astrologers, the magicians, the footh-laye:s thew unto the king:"

28 But there is a God in heaven that re realeth fecrets, and maketh known to the King Nebuchadnezzar what fhall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are thefe;

2) As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth fecrets maketh known to thee what fall come to pafs.

30 But as for me, this fecret is not re vealed to me for any wifdom that I have more than any living, but for their fakes that hall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

31 Thou, O king, faweft, and behold a great image. This great image, whofe bright nefs was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

32 This image's head was of fine goid, his breaft and his arms of filver, his belly and his thighs of brass.

33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

34 Thou faweft till that a ftone was cut out without hands, which fmote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brafs, the filver, and the gold, broken to pieces to gether, and became like the chaff of the fummer thrething floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the tone that fmote the image be came a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king

L

His interpretation.

Chap. II!. 37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and frength, and glory.

38 And whereivever the children of men dwell, the beans of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he givea into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.

39 And after thee hall arife another king. dom inferior to thee, and another third king. dom of braís, which thall bear rule over all

the earth.

40 And the fourth kingdom fhall be ftrong as iron: forafmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and fubdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all thefe, fhall it break in pieces and bruife.

41 And whereas thou faweft the feet and toes, part of potters clay, and part of iron, the kingdom fall be divided; but there fhall be in it of the strength of the iron, forafmuch as thou fawett the iron mixed with the miry clay.

42 And as the tocs of the feet were part of iron and part of clay; fo the kingdom thall be partly trong, and partly broken.

43 And whereas thou fawet iron mixed with miry clay, they thall mingle themfelves with the feed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

44 And in the days of thefe kings fhall the God of heaven fet up a kingdom, which thall never be destroyed and the kingdom fhall not be left to other people, but it thall break In pieces and confume all these kingdoms, and it iball ftand for ever.

45 Forafmuch as thou faweft that the ftone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brafs, the clay, the filver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what fhall come to pafs hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof fure.

46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell up. on his face, and worthipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and fweet odours unto him.

47 The king anfwered unto Daniel, and faid, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of fecrets, fecing thou couldent reveal this fecret.

48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wife men of Babylon.

49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he fet Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel fat in the gate of the king.

СНАР. 111.

1 Nebuchadnezzar dedicateth a golden image in Dura. 8 Shadrach, Mefbach and Abed, nego are accufed.

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image

of gold, whofe height quas threefcore cubits, and the breadth thereof fix cubits: he fet it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king fent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers,

the counfellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had fet up.

3 Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treafurers, the counsellors, the therits, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebu chadnezzar the king had fet up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had fet up.

4 Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,

5 That at what time ye hear the found of the cornet, flute, harp, fackbut, pfaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of mufick, ye fall down and worthip the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath fet up.

6 And whofo falleth net down and wor hippeth fhall the fame hour be caft into the midit of a burning fiery furnace.

7 Therefore at that time; when all the pen ple heard the found of the cornet, flute, haip, fackbut, pfaltery, and all kinds of mulick, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worhipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had fet up.

8 Wherctore at that tinie certain Chal deans came near, and accufed the Jews. 9 They fpake and aid to the king Nebu chadnezzar, O king, live for ever.

10 Thou, O king, haft made a decree, that every man that shall hear the found of the cornet, flute, harp, fack but, pfaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of mufick, fhall fall down and worship the golden image:

11 And whofo falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be caft into the mida of a burning fiery furnace.

12 There are certain Jews whom thou haft fet over the artairs of the province of Baby. lon, Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego; there men, O king, have not regarded thee: they ferve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou haft fet up.

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought thefe men before the king.

14 Nebuchadnezzar fpake and faid unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, do not ye ferve my gods, nor wor hip the golden image which I have fet up?

15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ve hear the found of the cornet, flute, harp, fackbut, pfaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of mufick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye thall be catt the fame hour into the midft of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that hall deliver you out of my hands?

16 Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego, anfwered, and faid to the king, O Nebuchad nezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in

this matter.

17 If it be fo, our God whom we ferve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not ferve thy gods, nor worthip the golden image which thou hait fet up,

Nebuchadnezzar's dream.

DANIE L.

Daniel's interpretation

19¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fu- laiting kingdom, and his dominion is fre fy, and the form of his vifage was changed generation to generation. againft Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego: therefore he fpake, and commanded that they fhould heat the furnace one feven times more than it was wont to be heated.

20 And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their hofen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were caft into the midft of the burning fiery furnace.

22 Therefore, because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire flew thofe men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

23 And these three men, Shadrach, Mefhach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midft of the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was antonie, and rofe up in hafte, and fpake, and faid unto his counsellors, Did not wc caft three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.

25 He answered and faid, Lo, I fee four men loofe, walking in the midft of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burcing fiery furnace, and fpake, and said, Shadrach, Mefliach, and Abednego, ye fervants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego, came forth of the

midft of the fire.

27 And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, faw thefe men, upon whofe bodies the tire had no power, nor was an hair of their head finged, neither were their coats changed, nor the fmell of fire had pasted on them.

18 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and faid, Bieffed be the God of Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego, who hath fent his angel, and delivered his fervants that truned in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not ferve nor worship any god, except their own God.

29 Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which fpeak any thing amifs again the God of Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego, thall be cut In pieces, and their houfes thall be made dunghill; because there is no other God that can deliver after this fort.

30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Methach, and Abed-nego, in the province of Babylon.

4 I Nebuchadnezzar was at rett in mint houfe, and flourishing in my palace:

5 I faw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed, and the vifions of my head troubled me.

6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wife men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the inter pretation of the dream.

7 Then came in the magicians, the aftrologers, the Chaldeans, and the foothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpre tation thereof.

8 But at the latt Daniel came in before me, whofe name was Beltefhazzar, accord. ing to the name of my God, and in whom i the fpirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,

9 O Beltefhazzar, mafter of the magicians, because I know that the fpirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no fecret troubleth thee, tell me the vifions of my dream that I have feen, and the interpretation thereof.

10 Thus were the vifions of mine head in my bed; I faw, and behold a tree in the midt of the earth, and the height thereof was great.

11 The tree grew, and was frong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the fight thereof to the end of all the earth

12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the bearts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all fleth was fed of

it.

13 I faw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy ont came down from heaven;

14 He cried aloud, and faid thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, thake of his leaves, and fcatter his fruit: let the beats get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches.

15 Neverthelefs, leave the ftump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brafs, in the tender grafs of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and lef his portion be with the bears in the grafs of the earth.

16 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beat's heart be given unto him; and let feven times pafs over him.

17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whom fo ever he will, and fetteth up over it the ba feft of men.

18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have feen. Now thou, O Beltehazzar, de. clare the interpretation thereof, forafmuch as all the wife men of my kingdom are not

able to make known unto me the interpreta

tion: but thou art able; or the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

19 Then Daniel, whofe name was Beltehazzar, was aflonied for one hour, aud his thoughts troubled him. The king pake, and faid, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof trouble #bee.

The story of the event.

Belsbazzar'ı impious fedf. minion is an everlasting dominion, and ha kingdom is from generation to generation:

Chap. 17: Eelte hazzar anfwered and faid, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemics.

20 The tree that thou faweit, which grew, and was itrong, whofe height reached unto the heaven, and the fight thereof to all the earth;

21 Whofe leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beats of the field dwelt, and upon whofe branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:

22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatnefs is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

23 And whereas the king faw a watcher and an holy one coming down trom heaven, and faying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the ftump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brafs in the tender grafs of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till leven times pafs over him;

2 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which is come upon my lord the king:

25 That they hall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beafts of the field, and they thail make thee to eat grafs as oxen, and they thall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and feven times fhall país over thee, till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomfoever he will.

26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree-roots; thy kingdom thall be fure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy fins by righteoufnefs, and thine iniquities by thewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.

29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.

30 The king fpake and faid, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the houfe of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majefty?

31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, fay ing, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is fpoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling ball be with the beafs of the field: they fhall make thee to eat grafs as oven, and feven times thall pass over thee, until thou know that the Mott High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whom foever he will.

33 The fame hour was the thing fulfilled upoa Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grafs as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

36 At the fame time my reafon returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom mine honour and brightne's returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords fought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whofe works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abafe. CHAP. V.

1 Belshazzar's impious feaf: 5 a hand writ ing troubleth him: 17 Daniel retroveth him: 25 and interpreteth the writing.

BElhazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand,

2 Belshazzar, while he tafted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and filver vetfels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerufalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

3 Then they brought the golden vefiels that were taken out of the temple of the houfe of God which was at Jerufalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.

4 They drank wine, and praifed the gods of gold, and of filver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of tone.

Sin the famé hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the platter of the wall of the king's palace: and the king faw the part of the hand that wrote.

6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, fo that the joints of his loins were loofed, and his knees fmote one against another,

7 The king cried aloud to bring in the aftro. logers, the Chaldeans, and the foothfayers. And the king fpake, and faid to the wife men of Babylon, Whofoever thall read this writing, and thew me the interpretation thereof, thall be clothed with fearlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and thall be the third ruler in the kingdom.

8 Then came in all the king's wile men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly trou bled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were altonied.

10 Now the queen, by reafon of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet houfe: and the queen fpake, and faid, O king, live for ever let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy counts. nance be changed:

II There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understand.

ing and wifdom, like the wifdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I fay, thy father, made matter of the magicians, aitroLogers, Chaldeans, and foothfayers;

12 Forafmuch as an excellent ipirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and fhewing of hard fentences, and diffolving of doubts, were found in the fame Daniel, whom the king named Beltehazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will fhew the interpretation.

13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king ipake and faid unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

14 I have even heard of thee, that the fpirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wifdom is found

in thee.

15 And now the wife men, the aftrologers, have been brought in before me, that they fhould read this, writing, and nake known

unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not thew the interpretation of the thing:

16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canft make interpretations, and diffolve doubts: now if thou cant read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou thait be clothed with fcarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and fhalt be the third ruler in the Lingdom.

17 Then Daniel anfwered and faid before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyfelf, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

18 0 thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majetty, and glory, and honour:

19 And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he few; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he fet up; and whom he would he put down.

20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was depofed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

21 And he was driven from the fons of men; and his heart was made like the beafts, and his dwelling was with the wild affes; they fed him with grafs like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the moit bigh God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomfoever he will.

22 And thou his fon, O Belshazzar, haft not humbled thine heart, though thou kneweit all this;

23 But haft lifted up thyfelf against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the veifels of his houfe before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou haft praifed the gods or filver, and gold, of brafs, iron, wood, and ftone, which Tee not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whofe hand thy breath is, and whofe are all thy ways, halt thou not glorified.

24 Then was the part of the hand fent from him; and this writing was written.

interpreted by Danick

25 And this is the writing that wi written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.

27 TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the ba lances, and art found wanting.

28 PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Perfians.

29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with fearlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a procla mation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom,

30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans flain.

31 And Darius the Median took the king. dom, being about threefcore and two years old.

CHAP. VI.

1 Daniel's preferment: 16 he is cafi into the den of lions, 18 and faved. IT pleafed Darius to fet over the kingdom da hundred and twenty princes, which thould be over the whole kingdom;

2 And over thefe three prefidents; of whom Daniel was firit: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king thould have no damage.

3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the prefidents and princes, because an excellent fpirit was in him; and the king thought to fet him over the whole realm.

4 Then the presidents and princes fough to find occafion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occafios nor fault; forafmuch as he was faithful neither was there any error or fault found in him.

Then faid thefe men, We shall not find any occafion against this Daniel, except w find it against him concerning the law of his God.

6 Then thefe prefidents and princes af fembled together to the king, and fail thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.

7 All the prefidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have confulted together to establish a royal datute, and to make a firm decree, that whofoever thall ak a petition of any god or man for thirty days, fave of thee, O king, he thall be caft into the dea of lions.

8 Now, O king, eftablish the decree, and fign the writing, that it be not changed, at cording to the law of the Medes and Perfians, which altereth not.

9 Wherefore king Darius figned the writ ing and the decree.

10 Now when Daniel knew that the writ. ing was figned, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber to ward Jerufalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did ateretime.

11 Then thefe men affembled, and found Daniel praying and making fupplication be. fore his God.

12 Then they came near, and fpake be fore the king concerning the king's decree; Haft thou not figned a decree, that every man that thall aika petition of any Ged or man within thirty days, fave of thee, O
