Paul commendeth himself.

Chap. xi, xil.

17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commend eth.

CHAP. XI.

He glorieth in affiction.

21 I fpeak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit, whereinfoever any is bold, (I fpeak foolishly,) I am bold alfo.

22 Are they Hebrews? fo am I. Are they Ifraelites fo am I. Are they the feed of

Paul being forced, entereth into a commenda. Abraham? fo am 1. tion of himself.

WOULD to God ye could bear with me

a little in my folly and indeed bear

with me.

2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealoufy: for I have efpoufed you to one hufband, that I may prefent you as a chatte virgin to Chrift.

3 But I fear, left by any means, as the ferpent beguiled Eve through his fubtilty, fo your minds fhould be corrupted from the fimplicity that is in Christ.

4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jefus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another fpirit, which ye have not received, or another gofpel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with

bim.

s For 1 fuppofe I was not a whit behind the very chiefeft apoftles.

6 But though I be rude in fpeech, yet not In knowledge; but we have been thoroughly made manifeft among you in all things.

7 Have I committed an offence in abafing myfelf that ye might be exalted, becaufe I have preached to you the gospel of God freely ?

8 Í robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service.

9 And when I was prefent with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia fupplied: and in all things I have kept myfelt from being burdenfome unto you, and so will I keep my felf.

10 As the truth of Chrift is in me, no man fhall ftop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia.

11 Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.

12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occafion from them which defire occafion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.

a

23 Are they minifters of Chrift? (I speak as

fool) I am more; in labours more abundant,

in ftripes above meafure, in prifons more fre quent, in deaths oft.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty fripes fave one.

13 For fuch are falfe apoftles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apoftles of Chrift,

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15 Therefore it is no great thing if his minifters alfo be transformed as the minif. ters of righteousness; whofe end shall be according to their works.

16 I fay again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwife, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boatt myself a little.

25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I ftoned, thrice I fuffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilder nefs, in perils in the fea, in perils among falfe brethren;

17 That which I fpeak, I fpeak it not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boating.

18 Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory alfo.

19 For je fufer fools gladly, feeing ye yourselves are wife.

27 In wearinefs and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirft, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

28 Befide thofe things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

20 For ye fuffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, it a man take of you, ir a man exalt himself, if a mau fmite you on the face.

29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?

30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.

31 The God and Father of our Lord Jefus Chrift, which is bleffed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

32 In Damafcus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damafcenes with a garrifon, defirous to apprehend me:

33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall and escaped his hands.

CHAP. XII.

He commendeth his apoftleship, not by bit revelations, but by his infirmities.

IT

T is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to vifions and revelations of the Lord.

2 I knew a man in Chrift above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I canno tell: God knoweth ;) fuch an one caught to the third heaven.

3 And I knew fuch a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth ;)

4 How that he was caught up into para dife, and heard unfpeakable words, which i is not lawful for a man to utter.

5 Of fuch an one will I glory: yet of my felf I will not glory, but in mine infirmitic

6 For though I would defire to glory, fhall not be a fool; for I will fay the truth but now i forbear, left any man should think of me above that which he feeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.

7 And left I should be exalted above mea fure through the abundance of the revelations there was given to me a thorn in the fleth the meffenger of Satan to buffet me, leit fhould be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I befought the Lord thrice that it might depart from me.

9 And he aid unto me, My grace is fuf ficieat for thee: for my ftrength is mad

perfect in weakness. Moft gladly therefore
will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the 1 He threateneth obftinate finners. 5 Heat
power of Christ may reif upon me.

ro Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities,
in reproaches, in neceffities, in perfecutions,
in diftreffes for Chrift's fake: for when I am
weak, then am I trong.

11 I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I be hind the very chiefeft apostles, though I be nothing.

12 Truly the figns of an apoftle were wrought among you in all patience, in figns, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

13 For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I my. felf was not burdenfome to you? forgive me this wrong.

14 Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdenfome to you: for I feek not your's, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the pa. rents, but the parents for the children.

15 And I will very gladly spend and be fpent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the lefs I be loved.

16 But be it fo, I did not burden you nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.

17 Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I fent unto you?

18 I defired Titus, and with him I fent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? Walked we not in the fame fpirit! walked we not in the fame steps?

19 Again, think ye that we excufe ourfelves unto you? We fpeak before God in Chrift: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.

20 For I fear, left, when I come, I fhall not find you fuch as I would, and that I shall be found unto you fuch as ye would not: left there be debates, envyings, wraths, ftrifes, backbitings, whisperings, fwellings,

tumults:

21 And left, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I fhall bewail many which have finned already, and have not repented of the uncleanneis and Fornication and lafcivioufnefs which they have committed.

vifeth them to a trial of their faith. THIS is the third time I am coming to

you. In the mouth of two or three wit nefles thall every word be established.

2 I told you before, and foretel you, as if I were prefent, the fecond time; and being abfent now I write to them which hereto fore have finned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not fpare:

3 Since ye feek a proof of Chrift fpeaking in me, which to you ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.

4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we alfo are weak in him, but we fhall live with him by the power of God to ward you.

5 Examine yourfelves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own felves. Know ye not your own felves, how that Jefus Chrift is in you, except ye be reprobates?

6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.

7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honeft, though we be as reprobates.

8 For we can do nothing againft the truth, but for the truth.

9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are ftrong: and this alfo we wish, even your perfection.

to Therefore I write these things being abfent, left being prefent 1 fhould ufe harp. nefs, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and net to deftruction."

11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be per
fect, be of good comfort, be of one mind,
live in peace; and the God of love and peace
shall be with you.

12 Greet one another with an holy kifs.
13 All the faints falute you.

14 The grace of the Lord Jefus Chrift, and
the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Ghoft, be with you all. Amen.

As we faid before, fo fay I now again If any man preach any other gospel into you than that ye have received, let him be accurfed.

But I certify you, brethren, that

than * Of juflification by faith,

Chap. ii, ii!. the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

12 For I neither received it of man, nei eather was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jefus Chrift.

13 For ye have heard of my converfation in time part in the Jews' religion, bow that beyond measure I perfecuted the church of God, and waited it:

14 And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the tra ditions of my fathers.

15 But when it pleased God, who fepa. rated me from my mother's womb, and call ed me by his grace,

16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

17 Neither went I up to Jerufalem to them which were apoftles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damafcus.

18 Then after three years I went up to Jerufalem to fee Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

19 But other of the apoftles faw I none, fave James the Lord's brother.

20 Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.

21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;

22 And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judea which were in Chrift:

23 But they had heard only, That he which perfecuted us in times paft, now preacheth the faith which once he deftroyed. 24 And they glorified God in me.

CHAP. II.

He fheweth when he went up again to Jerufalem, and why. 14 of juflification by faith, and not by works. THEN fourteen years after I went up again to Jerufalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me alfo.

2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gofpel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, left by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcifed:

4 And that because of falfe brethren umawares brought in, who came in pri. vily to spy out our liberty which we have in Chrift Jefus, that they might bring us into bondage:

5 To whom we gave place by fubjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gofpel might continue with you.

6 But of thefe who feemed to be fome what, whatfoever they were it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's perfon: for they who seemed to he fomewhat in conference added nothing to me:

7 But contrariwife, when they faw that the gospel of the uncircumcifion was commit. ted unto me, as the gospel of the circumcifion was unto Peter;

8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcifion, he fame was mighty in me toward the Gentiles :)

and not by works, 9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who feemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we bould go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcifion.

10 Only they would that we should re member the poor; the fame which I also was forward to do.

11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withitood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew, and fe parated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcifion

13 And the other Jews diffembled likewife with him; infomuch that Barnabas alfo was carried away with their diffimulation.

14 But when I faw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I faid unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, liveft after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compelleft thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

15 We who are Jews by nature, and not finners of the Gentiles,

16 Knowing that a man is not juftified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift, even we have believed in Jefus Chrift, that we might be juftified by the faith of Chrift, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law fhall no flest fe justified.

17 But if while we seek to be justified by Chrift, we ourselves alfo are found finners, is therefore Chrift the minister of fin? God forbid.

18 For if I build again the things which I deftroyed, I make myfelf a tranfgreffor.

19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

201 am crucified with Chrift: neverthelefs, I live; yet not I, but Chrift liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the fleth I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

21 I do not fruftrate the grace of God: for if righteoufnefs come by the law, then Chrift is dead in vain.

CHAP. III.

1 He aketh what moved them to leave the

faith, and depend on the law. 6 They that believe are juftified.

Foolith Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whofe eyes Jefus Christ hath been evi. dently fet forth, crucified among you?

2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Are ye fo foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the fleth? 4 Have ye fuffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.

He therefore that miniftereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth be it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteoufnels.

7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the fame are the chidreu of Abraham,

Believers are juftified.

GALATIANS. Chrift freeth as from the la 8 And the fcripture, forefeeing that God N is a child, differeth nothing from OW I fay, That the heir, as long a

would juftify the heathen through faith,
preached before the gospel unto Abraham,
Jaying, In thee thall all nations be blessed.
9 So then they which be of faith are
bleffed with faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the
law are under the curfe; for it is written,
Curfed is every one that continueth not in
all things which are written in the book of
the law to do them.

II But that no man is juftified by the law in the fight of God, it is evident: for, The juft fhall live by faith.

12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them fhall live in them.

13 Chrift hath redeemed us from the curfe of the law, being made a curfe for us: for it is written, Curfed is every one that hangeth

on a tree:

14 That the bleifing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jetus Chrift that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15 Brethren, I fpeak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man difannulleth, or addeth thereto.

16 Now to Abraham and his feed were the promifes made. He faith not, And to feeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy feed, which is Chrift.

17 And this I fay, That the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Chrift, the 19 1a, which was four hundred and thirty years felve atter, cannot difannul, that it should make Chrit the promise of none effect.

19 Wherefore then ferveth the law? It was added because of tranfgreffions, till the feed fhould come to whom the promife was made: and it was ordained by angels in the hand of

a mediator.

20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of
one, but God is one.

21. Is the law then against the promises of
God! God forbid: for if there had been a law
given which could have given life, verily
righteoufnefs should have been by the law.
22 But the icripture hath concluded all un-
der fin, that the promife by faith of Jefus
Chrift might be given to them that believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept un.
der the law, shut up unto the faith which
fhould afterwards be revealed.

24 Wherefore the law was our fchoolmafter to bring us unto Chrift, that we might be

Pjuftified by faith.

The liberty of the Gospel.

Chap. v, vi.

16 But Jerufalem which is above is free, ich is the mother of us all.

27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren gar beareft not; break forth and cry, thou at travaileft not: for the defolate hath mamore children than the which hath an huf

28 Now, we brethren, as Ifaac was, are the ildren of promise.

29 But as then he that was born after the th perfecuted him that was born after the irit, even fo it is now.

30 Nevertheless, what faith the fcripture?
ift out the bond woman and her fon : for the
a of the bond woman shall not be heir with
e fon of the free woman.

31 So then, Srethren, we are not children
the bond woman, but of the free.
CHAP. V.

He moveth them to ftand in their liberty,
3 and not to obferve circumcifion.

TAND faft therefore in the liberty where

> with Chrift hath made us free, and be ot entangled again with the yoke of bonage.

2 Behold, I Paul fay unto you, that if e be circumcifed, Chrift fhall profit you nohing.

3. For I testify again to every man that circumcifed, that he is a debtor to do the 'hole law.

4 Chrift is become of no effect unto you, thofoever of you are justified by the law; e are fallen from grace.

5 For we through the Spirit wait for the ope of righteoufnefs by faith.

6 For in Jefus Chrift neither circumcifion vaileth any thing, nor uncircumcifion; but ith which worketh by love.

7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you hat ye fhould not obey the truth? 8 This perfuafion cometh not of him that alleth you.

A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in you through the ord, that ye will be none otherwife minded: it he that troubleth you shall bear his dgment, whofoever he be.

11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumfion, why do I yet fufter perfecution ? Then the offence of the cross ceafed.

12 I would they were even cut off which ouble you.

13 For, brethre, ye have been called to liberty; only fe not liberty for an cafion to the flesh, but by love ferve one other.

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, en in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour thyfelf.

15 But if ye bite and devour one another, te heed that ye te not confumed one of

other.

16 This I fay then, Walk in the Spirit, and
thall not fulfil the luft of the flesh.
7 For the flesh lufteth against the Spirit,
the Spirit againft the flesh and thefe
contrary the one to the other: fo that ye
inot do the things that ye would.

8 But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are
under the law.

9 Now the works of the flesh are maft, which are thefe, adultery, fornicauncleannefs, lafciviousness,

Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance,

To deal mildly with offenders,

emulations, wrath, ftrife, feditions, herefies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and fuch like of the which I tell you before, as I have alfo told you in time paft, that they which do fuch things fhall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, Peace, long futfering, gentleness, good nefs, raith, 23 Meeknefs, temperance: against fuch there is no law.

24 And they that are Chrift's have cruci. fied the fleth, with the affections and lufts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the spirit.

26 Let us not be defirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. CHAP. VI. 2 He willeth them to deal midly with a brother that bath flipped. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a

fault, ye which are fpiritual restore fuch an one in the fpirit of meeknefs; confidering thyfelf left thou alfo be tempted.

2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and fo fulfil the law of Christ.

3 For if a man think himself to be fomething, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himfelf.

4 But let every man prove his own work, and then fhall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

$ For every man fhall bear his own burden. Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man foweth, that fhall he alfo reap.

8 For he that foweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that foweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlafting.

9 And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, efpecially unto them who are of the household of faith,

II Ye fee how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.

12 As many as defire to make a fair thew in the fleth, they conftrain you to be circum. cifed; only left they should fuffer perfecution for the cross of Chrift.

13 For neither they themselves who are circumcifed keep the law; but defire to have you circumcifed, that they may glory in your fleth.

14 But God forbid that I fhould glory, fave in the crofs of our Lord Jefus Chrift, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

15 For in Chrift Jefus neither circumcifion availeth any thing, nor uncircumcifion, but a new creature.

16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Ifrael of God.

17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jefus,

18 Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Chrift be with your Ipirit. Amen.
