CHA P. XIX. The cities of refuge. 16 The punishment of a falfe witnefs.

WHEN the LORD thy God hath cut off the

nations, whofe the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou fucccedeft them, and dweileft in their cities, and in their houfes;

2 Thou shalt feparate three cities for thee In the midt of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to poffefs it.

3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coafts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every flayer may flee thither.

And this is the cafe of the flayer which Ace thither, that he may live: Whofo killeth his neighbour whom he hated not in time past;

As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his band fetcheth a ftroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head flippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he thall fee unto one of thefe cities and live:

The prief's exhortation to battle.

13 Thine eye fhall not pity him; but thou fhalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Ifrael, that it may go well with thee.

14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's land-mark, which they of old time have fet in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to poffefs it.

15¶One witnefs fhall not rife up against. a man for any iniquity, or for any fin, in any fin that he finneth: at the mouth of two wit. neffes, or at the mouth of three witneffes, hall the matter be established.

1 The prief's exhortation to encourage the people to battle. 10 How to use the cities that accept or refufe the proclamation of peace. 16 What cities must be devoted. WHEN thou goeft out to battle against thine enemies, and feeft horfes chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

2 And it thall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest thall approach, and fpeak unto the people,

3 And thall fay unto them, Hear, O Ifrael; Ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint; fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them:

4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your ene mies, to fave you.

5 And the officers fhall fpeak unto the people, faying, What man is there that hath built a new houfe, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his houfe, left he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him alfo go and return unto his houfe, left he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.

7 And what man is there that hath betroched a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his houfe, left he die in bat tle, and another man take her.

8 And the officers hall fpeak further unto the people, and they thall fay, What man is there that is fearful and taint-hearted? let him go and return unto his houfe, let his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.

8 Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Ifrael, whom thou haft redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Ifrael's charge. And the blood thall be forgiven them.

9 So thalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou fhalt do that which is right in the fight of the LORD.

14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, thalt thou take unto thyself: and thou shalt eat the fpoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

15 Thus fhalt thou do unto all the cities which are very tar of from thee, which are not of the cities of thefe nations.

10When thou goeft forth to war against thine enemies, and the LORD thy God hath delivered them into thine hands, and thou haft taken them captive,
