Hezekiah's death.

Chap. xxxiii.

Manasseh fucceedeth him. up to the towers, and another wall without, the leaders and captains in the camp of the and repaired Millo in the city of David, and king of Affyria: fo he retuned with thame of made darts and thields in abundance. face to his own land. And when he was come into the houfe of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels ilew him there with the fword.

6 And he fet captains of over the people, and gathered them togeer to him in the street of the gate of the city, and fpake comfortably to them, faying,

7 Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor difmayed for the king of Affyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him :

8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God, to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themfelves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

After this did Sennacherib king of Affyria fend his fervants to Jerufalem, (but he bimjelf laid fege against Lachith, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerufalem, faying,

10 Thus faith Sennacherib king of Affyria, Whereon do ye truft, that ye abide in the fiege in Jerufalem?

II Doth not Hezekiah perfuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, Saying, The LORD our God thall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Affyria?

12 Hath not the fame Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerufalem, faying, Ye shall worthip before one altar, and burn incenfe upon

13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of thofe lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?

14 Who was there among all the gods of thofe nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God fhould be able to deliver you out of mine hand?

15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor perfuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less thall your God deliver you out of mine hand?

16 And his fervants fpake yet more againft the LORD God, and against his fervant Heze. kiah.

17 He wrote alfo letters to rail on the LORD God of Krael, and to speak against him, faying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, fo fhall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.

18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' fpeech unto the people of Jerufalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

19 And they fpake against the God of Jerufalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of

22 Thus the LORD faved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerufalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Affyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every fide.

23 And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerufalem, and prefents to Hezekiah king of Judah: fo that he was magnified in the fight of all nations from thenceforth.

24 In thofe days Hezekiah was fick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a fign.

25 But Hezekiah rendered not again ac cording to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerufalem.

26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled him. felf for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerufalem, fo that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

27 And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himfelf treafuries for filver, and for gold, and for pre cious ftones, and for fpices, and for fhields, and for all manner of pleafant jewels;

28 Storehouses alfo for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and talls for all manner of beafts, and cotes for flocks.

29 Moreover he provided him cities, and poffettions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him fubitance very much.

30 This fame Hezekiah alfo stopped the upper water courfe of Gihon, and brought it ftraight down to the weft fide of the city of David. And Hezekiah profpered in all his works.

31 Howbeit, in the business of the ambailadors of the princes of Babylon, who fent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vifion of Ifaiah the prophet, the fon of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Ifrael.

33 And Hezekiah flept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefert of the fepulchres of the fons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerufalem did him honour at his death. And Manaffen his fon reigned in his

tead.

CHAP. XXXIII.

1 Manaleh's wicked reign: 11 be is carried into babylon: 12 upon bis prayer he is releafed: 20 Amon fücceedeth him: 24 be be ing flain by his own fervar, 25 Johab fuc. ceedeth him.

MANASSE was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fitty and five years in Jerufalem:

2 But did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD had caft out be fore the children of Ifrael.

3 For he built again the high places

which Hezekiah his father had broken down,
and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made
groves, and worshipped all the holl of heaven,
and ferved them.

4 Alfo he built altars in the house of the
LORD, whereof the LORD had faid, In Jerufa-
lem thall my name be for ever.

5 And he built altars for all the hoft of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.

6 And he caufed his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the fon of Hinnom: alfo he obferved times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar fpirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the fight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

7 And he fet a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, of whica God had faid to David, and to Solomon his fon, In this house, and in Jerufalem, which I have chofen before all the tribes of Ifrael, will I put my name for ever:

8 Neither will I any more remove the foot of Ifrael from out of the land which 1 have appointed for your fathers; fo that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the ftatutes and the ordinances by the hand of Mofes.

9 So Manaffeh made Judah and the inha bitants of Jerufalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD haddettroyed before the children of Ifrael.

Io And the LORD fpake to Manaffeh, and to his people: but they would not hearken.

Wherefore the LORD brought upon then the captains of the hot of the king of Allyria, which took Manaffeh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and car. ried him to Babylon.

12 And when he was in affiction, he befought the LORD his God, and humbled him. fell greatly before the God of his fathers,

13 And prayed unto him; and he was entreated of him, and heard his fupplication, and brought him again to Jerufalem into his kingdom. Then Manaffeli knew that the LORD he as God.

14 Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west fide of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compaired about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah.

15 And he took away the ftrange gods, and the idol out of the houfe of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the houfe of the LORD, and in Jerufalem, and caft them out of the city.

16 And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and facrificed thereon peace-offerings and thank-offerings, and commanded Judah to ferve the LORD God of Ifrael.

17 Nevertheless, the people did facrifice fill in the high ps, yet unto the LORD their God only.

18 Now the reft of the acts of Manaf feh, and his prayer unto his God, and the words of the feers that fpake to him in the name of the LORD God of Ifrael, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of lirael:

19 His prayer alío, and bow God was entreated of him, and all his tin, and his trefpafs,

Jofiah's good reign.

and the places wherein he built high places, and fet up groves and graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the fayings of tlcers.

20 So Manauch flept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his fon reigned in his tead.

21 Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned two years in Jerufalem.

22 But he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD, as did Manaffeh his father: for Amon facrificed unto all the carved images which Manaffeh his father had made, and fer. ved them;

23 And humbled not himself before the 1.op, as Manaffeh his father had humbled himfelf; but Amon trefpaffed inore and more. 24 And his fervants confpired against him, and flew him in his own houfe.

25 But the people of the land flew all them that had conspired againft king Amon; and the people of the land made Jofiah his fon king in his itead. CHAP. XXXIV. Jofiah's good reign: 3 he deffroyeth idolatry: & be repaireth the temple; 20 and, caufing the law to be read, renewweth the covenant with God.

J

OSIAH was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerufalem one and thirty years.

2 And he did that which was right in the fight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand nor to the left.

3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to feek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerufalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

4 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his prefence; and the images that were on high above them he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images he brake in pieces, and made dull of them, and ftrewed it upon the graves of them that had facrificed unto them.

5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusa lem.

6 And fo did he in the cities of Manaffeh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.

7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Ifrael, he returned to Jerufalem.

8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he fent Shaphan the fon or Azaliah, and Maafeiah the governor of the city, and Joah the fon or Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of

the LORD his God.

9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manaftch and phraim, and of all the remnant of Ifrael, and of all Judah and Benja. min; and they returned to Jerulalem.

10 And they put it in the hand of the work.

Chap. xxxv. men that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the houfe of the LORD, to repair and amend the house:

11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn ftone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houfes which the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 And the men did the work faithfully: and the overfeets of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the fons of Merari; and Zechariah and Methuliam, of the fons of the Kehathites, to fet it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could kill of inftruments of musick.

13 Allo they were over the bearers of burdens, and quere overfeers of all that wrought the work in any manner of fervice; and of the Levites there were fcribes, and oricers, and porters.

14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the houfe of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Mofes.

15 And Hilkiah anfwered and faid to Shaphan the fcribe, I have found the book of the law in the houfe of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, faying, All that was committed to thy fervants, they do it.

17 And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overfeers, and to the hand of the work

men.

18 Then Shaphan the fcribe told the king, faying, Hilkiah the prieft hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

19 And it came to pafs, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

and caufetb the law to read. unto him, Thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, concerning the words which thou hart heard; 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thy felf before God, when thou heardett his words against this place, and ageinft the inhabitants thereof, and humbledit thyfelt before me, and didtt rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee alfo, faith the LORD.

28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither thall thine eyes fee all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the fame. So they brought the king word again.

29 Then the king fent and gathered toge. ther all the elders of Judah and Jerufalem.

30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerufalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and fmall: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the

houfe of the LORD.

31 And the king ftood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk atter the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his teftimonies, and his ftatutes, with all his heart, and with all his foul to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

32 And he caufed all that were present in Te. rufalem and Benjamin to ftand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerufalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

33 And Jofiah took away all the abomina. tions out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Ifrael, and made all that were prefent in Ifrael to fserve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.

CHA P. XXXV,

1 Jofiah keepeth a folemn passover: 22 he, provoking Pharaoh-nechob, is flain at Megidan.

20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the fon of Shaphan, and Abdon the fon of Micah, and Shaphan the feribe, and MOREOVER Jofiah kept a paffover unto

Afaiah a fervant of the king's, faying,

21 Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Ifrael and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: 1or great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.

22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetes, the wife of Shallum the fon of Tikvath, the fon of Hafrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now the dwelt in Jerufalem in the college :) and they fpake to her to that effect.

23 And the answered them, Thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, Tell ye the man that fent you to me,

24 Thus faith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curfes that are written in the book which they have read be fore the king of Judah :

25 Because they have forfaker me, and have burned incenie to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath thall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched. 26 And as for the king of Judah who fent you to enquire of the LORD, fo fhall ye fay

the LORD in Jerufalem; and they killed the paffover on the fourteenth day of the firft month.

2 And he fet the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the fervice of the house of the LORD,

3 And faid unto the Levites that taught all Ifrael, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the houfe which Solomon the fon of David king of Ifrael did build; it fall not be a burden upon your shoulders: ferve now the LORD your God, and his people Ifrael,

4 And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courtes, accord. ing to the writing of David king of liracl, and according to the writing of Solomon his fon.

5 And ftand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the divifion of the families of the Levites.

6 So kill the poaver, and fanctify your. felves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moles.

7 And Jofiah gave to the people, of t e flock, lambs and kids, all for the pallover. offerings, for all that were prefent, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thou.

10 So the fervice was prepared, and the priests flood in their place, and the Levites in their courfes, acccording to the king's commandment.

11 And they killed the paffover, and the priefts fprinkled the blood from their hands, and the Levites dayed them.

12 And they removed the burnt-offerings, that they might give according to the divifions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Mofes, And fo did they with the oxen.

23 And the archers thot at king Jofiah; and the king said to his fervants, Have me away; for I am fore wounded.

24 His fervants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the fecond chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerufa. lem, and he died, and was buried in one of the fepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerufalem mourned for Jofiah.

25 And Jeremiah lamented for Jofial:: and all the finging men and the finging wo men fpake of Jofiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Ifrael: and, behold, they are written in the lamenta. tions.

15 And the fingers the fons of Afaph were In their place, according to the commandment of David, and Afaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's fcer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their fervice; for their brethren the Levites pre. pared for them.

16 So all the fervice of the LORD was prepared the fame day, to keep the parlover, and to offer burnt-offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king Jofiah.

17 And the children of Ifrael that were prefent kept the padover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread, seven days.

18 And there was no paffover like to that kept in Ifracl, from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Ifrael keep fuch a pailover a Jofiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and If. rael that were prefent, and the inhabitants of Jerufalem.

19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jofiah was this paflover kept..

20 After all this, when Jofiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt caine up to fight againit Carchemith by Euphrates: and Jotiah went out against him.

21 But he fent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make hafte: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.

22 Nevertheless, Jofiah would not turn his face from him, but diguifed himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not

his father's ftead in Jerufalem.

2 Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerufalem.

3 And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerufalem, and condemned the land in an hundred talents of fiver, and a talent of gold.

4 And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerufalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.

5Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerufalem: and he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD his God.

6 Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.

7 Nebuchadnezzar alfo carried off the veffels of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.

8 Now the reft of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings or Ifrael and Judah: and Jehoiachin his fen reigned in his tead.

9¶ Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerufalem and he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD.

10 And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar ient and brought him to Ba bylon, with the goodly veffels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over judah and Jerufalem.

11 Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerufalem.

12 And he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD his God, and humbled not

Chap. I. himfelf before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD.

13 And he also rebelled against king Nebu chadnezzar, who had made him fwear by God: but he ftiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the LORD God of Ifrael.

14 Moreover all the chief of the priests and the people tranfgreffed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed In Jerufalem.

15 And the LORD God of their fathers fent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and fending; because he had compation on his people, and on his dwelling place:

16 But they mocked the meifengers of God, and defpifed his words, and mifuled his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arofe against his people, till there was no remedy.

17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Challees, who flew their young men with the fword in the house of their fanctuary, and had no rompattion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that tooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.

18 And all the veffels of the houfe of God, great and fmall, and the treasures of the houfe of the LORD, and the treasures of the king,

19 And they burnt the houfe of God, and brake down the wall of Jerufalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly veffels thereof.

20 And them that had escaped from the fword carried he away to Babylon; where they were fervants to him and his fons, until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:

21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her fabbaths: for as long as the lay defo late the kept fabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Perfia, that the word of the LORD, Spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Perfia, that he made a proclamation through. out all his kingdom, and put it allo in writing, faying,

23 Thus faith Cyrus king of Perfia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build nim an house in Jerufalem, which is in Judan. Who is there among you of all his peo ple? the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
