CHAP. XVIII.

15 Judas betrayeth Chrift, Peter denieth him, 22 Jefus is arraigned before Pilate. WHEN Jefus had spoken thefe words, he wer t forth with his difciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his difciples.

2 And Judas alfo, which betrayed him, knew the place; for Jefus oft-times reforted thither with his difciples.

3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharifees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches, and weapons.

4 Jefus therefore, knowing all things that fhould come upon him, went forth, and faid unto them, Whom feek ye?

5 They answered him, Jefus of Nazareth. Jefus faith unto them, I am he. And Judas alfo, which betrayed him, ftood with them.

6 As foon then as he had faid unto them, I am be, they went backward and fell to the ground.

7 Then asked he them again, Whom feek ye? And they laid, Jefus of Nazareth.

Jetus antwered, I have to you that I am be. If therefore ye feck me, let thefe go their way:

That the faying might be fulfilled, which he ipake, of them which thou gavest me have

I loft none.

10 Then Simon Peter, having a fword, drew it, and fmote the high prief's fervant, and cut off his right ear. The fervant's name was Malchus.

11 Then faid Jefus unto Peter, Put up thy fword into the sheath: the cup which my Fa. ther hath given me, fhall I not drink it ́

12 Then the band, and the captain, and officers of the Jews, took Jefus, and bound him,

13 And led him away to Annas firft: (for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that fame year.)

14 Now Caiaphas was he which gave coun fel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man fhould die for the people.

15¶ And Simon Peter followed Jefus, and fo did anther difciple. That difciple was known unto the high pricft, and went in with Jefus into the palace of the high priest.

16 But Peter ftood at the door without. Then went out that other difciple, which was known unto the high priest, and fpake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17 Then faith the damfel that kept the

18 And the fervants and officers flood there, who had made a fire of coals, (for it was cold,) and they warmed themfelves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

19 The high prieft then asked Jefus of his difciples, and of his doctrine.

20 Jefus anfwered him, I fpake openly to the world; I ever taught in the fynagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always refort and in fecret have I faid nothing.

21 Why askeft thou me? atk them which heard me, what I have faid unto them: behold, they know what I faid.

22 And when he had thus fpoken, one of the officers which stood by truck Jefus with the palm of his hand, faying, Answereft thou the high priest fo

21 Jetus anfwered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witnefs of the evil; but if well, why fmiteft thou me ?

24 (Now Annas had fent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.)

25 And Simon Peter ftood and warmed himself: they faid therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his difciples! He denied it, and faid, I am not.

26 One of the fervants of the high priest (bes ing his kinfman whofe car Peter cut off) faith, Did not 1 fee thee in the garden with him?

27 Peter then denied again; and immediate. ly the cock crew.

28 Then led they Jefus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early, and they themselves wen not into the judg ment-hall, left 'hey should be defiled; but that they might eat the paffover.

29 Pilate then went out unto them, and faid, What accufation bring ye against this man?

30 They answered and faid unto him, if he were not a malefactor, we would not have de. livered him up unto thee.

31 Then faid Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him ring to your law. The Jews therefore faid unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32 That the faying of Jefus might be fu!filled, which he ipake, fignifying what dearh

re thould die.

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgmenthalf again, and called Jefus, and faid unto him, Art thou the king of the Jews?

34 Jefus anfwered him, Sayeft thou this thing of thyfelf, or did others tell it thee of me?

35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have deliver. ed thee unto me. What haft thou done?

36 Jefus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world then would my fervarts fight, that I fhould not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate therefore faid unto him. Art hou a king then? Jefus anfwered, Thou fayeft that I am a king. To this end was 1 born, and for this caufe came I into the world, that I should bear witaefs unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate faith unto him, What is truth? And when he had faid this he went out again unto the Jews, and faith unto them, I zadin him no fault at all.

39 But ye have a cufton, that I fhould

40 Then cried they all again, faying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

CHAP. XIX.

1 Chrift is forged, crowned with thorns,

HEN Pilate therefore took Jefus, and

2 And the foldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3 And faid, Hail, king of the Jews! and they fmote him with their hands.

4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and faith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault

in him.

5 Then came Jefus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate faith unto them, Behold the man!

6 When the chief priests therefore and officers faw him, they cried out, faying, Crucify bim, crucify bim. Pilate faith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no

fault in him.

7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he

made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate therefore heard that faying, he was the more afraid;

9 And went again into the judgment-hall, and faith unto Jefus, Whence art thou? But Jefus gave him no answer.

10 Then faith Pilate unto him, Speakeft thou not unto me? Knoweft thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to releafe thee?

11 Jeius anfwered, Thou couldet have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater fin.

12 And from thenceforth Pilate fought to releafe him: but the Jews cried out, faying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cefar's friend: whofoever maketh himself a king, fpeaketh against Cefar.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that faying, he brought Jefus forth, and fat down in the judgment-feat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation of the pafs over, and about the fixth hour: and he faith unto the Jews, Behold your king!

15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate faith unto them, Shall I crucify your King! The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cefar.

16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jefus, an led him away.

17 And he bearing his crofs went forth into a place called the place of a scull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha;

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either fide one, and Jefus in the

midft.

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the crofs. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF

THE JEWS.

and crucifixion.

20 This title then read many of the Jews; for the place where Jefus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in He brew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Then faid the chief priefts of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he faid, I am king of the Jews.

22 Pilate anfwered, What I have written, t have written.

23 Then the foldiers, when they had cru. cified Jefus, took his garments, (and made four parts, to every foldier a part,) and also bis coat: now the coat was without feam, woven from the top throughout.

24 They faid therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but caft lots for it, whofe it fhall be: that the fcripture might be ful filled, which faith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my venture they did caft lots. These things therefore the fol diers did.

25 Now there food by the cross of Jefus, his mother, and his mother's fifter, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jefus therefore faw his mother, and the difciple ftanding by whom he loved, he faith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy

fon!

27 Then faith he to the difciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that difciple

took her unto his own home.

28 After this, Jefus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the fcripture might be fulfilled, faith, I thirst.

29 Now there was fet a velel full of vine. gar: and they filled a fponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyffop, and put it to his mouth.

30 When Jefus therefore had received the vinegar, he faid, it is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31 The Jews therefore because it was the preparation, that the bodies thould not remain upon the crofs on the fabbath day, (for that fabbath day was an high day,) befought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 Then came the foldiers, and brake the legs of the firit, and of the other which way crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jefus, and fow that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the foldiers with a fper pierced his fide, and forthwith came there ou blood and water.

35 And he that faw it bare record, and record is true; and he knoweth that he fai true, that ye might believe.

36 For thefe things were done, that fcripture should be fulfilled, A bone of his thail nct be broken.

37 And again another feripture faith, Thy fhall look on him whom they pierced.

38 And after this Jofeph of Arimath, (being a difciple of Jefus, but fecretly for fear of the Jews,) befought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jefus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefre and took the body of Jefus.

39 And there came alfo Nicodemus (which at the firft came to Jefus by night,) and brought a mixture of myrrh and slows, about an hundred pound weight.

Chri's refurrection.

Chap. xx, xxi. 40 Then took they the body of Jefus, and Wound it in linen clothes with the fpices as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new fepulchre, wherein was never man yet

laid.

42 There laid they Jefus therefore, because of the Jews preparation-day; for the fepulchre was nigh at hand. CHAP. XX.

Mary cometh to the fepulchre, 3 and Peter and fohn. 24 The incredulity of Thomas. THE firit day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the fepulchre, and feeth the one taken away from the fepulchre.

2 Then the runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other difciple whom Jefus loved, and faith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the fepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other difciple, and came to the fepulchre.

4 So they ran both together: and the other difciple did outrun Peter, and came firit to the fepulchre.

5 And he, ftooping down, and looking in, faw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the fepulchre, and feeth the linen clothes lie,

7 And the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

Then went in alfo that other difciple, which came first to the fepulchre, and he faw and believed.

9 For as yet they knew not the fcripture, that he muff rife again from the dead. 10 Then the difciples went away again unto their own home.

11 ¶ But Mary food without at the fepulchre, weeping; and, as the wept, the flooped down, and looked into the fepulchre,

12 And feeth two angels in white fitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jefus had lain.

13 And they fay unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She faith unto them, Becaufe they have taken away my Lord, and I know

not where they have laid him.

14 And when the had thus faid, She turned herself back, and faw Jefus ftanding, and knew not that it was Jefus.

15 Jefus faith unto her, Woman, why weep. eft thou! whom feekeft thou? She, fuppofing him to be the gardener, faith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou haft laid him, and I will take him

away.

16 Jefus faith unto her, Mary. She turned herfelf, and faith unto him, Rabboni; which is to fay, Mafter.

17 Jefus faith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet afcended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and fay unto them, I afcend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the difciples that the had feen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

19 Then the fame day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors

He appeareth to his disciples. were fhut where the difciples were affem. bled for fear of the Jews, came Jefus, and ftood in the midft, and faith unto them, Peace be unto you.

20 And when he had fo faid, he fhewed unto them his hands and his fide. Then were the difciples glad when they faw the Lord.

21 Then faid Jefus to them again, Peace he unto you: as my Father hath fent me, even fo fend I you.

22 And when he had faid this, he breathed on them, and faith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghott.

23 Whofe foever fins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whole foever fint ye retain, they are retained.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, ealled Didymus, was not with them when Jefus came.

25 The other difciples therefore faid unto him, We have feen the LORD. But he faid unto them, Except I fhall fee in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his fide, I will not believe.

26 And after eight days, again his dif ciples were within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jefus, the doors being thut, and ftood in the midit, and said, Peace be unto you.

27 Then faith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thruft it into my fide: and be not faithlefs, but believing,

28 And Thomas anfwered and faid unto him, My Lord, and my God.

29 Jefus faith unto him, Thomas, because thou haft feen me, thou hatt believed: bleffec are they that have not feen, and yet have believed.

30 And many other figns truly did Jefus in the prefence of his difciples, which are not written in this book:

31 But thefe are written, that ye might be lieve that Jefus is the Chrift, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

3 Simon Peter faith unto them, I go a fishing. They fay unto him, We alfo go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

4 But when the morning was now come, Jefus ftood on the fhore; but the difciples knew not that it was Jefus.

1; For thefe are not drunken, as ye fuppofe, feeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

17 And it shall come to pafs in the last days, (faith God,) I will pour out of my Spirit upon all fleth and your fons and your daughters fall prophefy, and your young men fhall fee vifions, and your old men hall dream dreams:

18 And on my fervants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in thofe days of my Spirit; and they fhall prophefy:

19 And I will thew wonders in heaven above, and figns in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of fmoke.

20 The fun thall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

21 And it shall come to pafs, that whofoever shall call on the name of the Lord fhall be faved.

22 Ye men of Ifrael, hear these words; Jefus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you, by miracles, and wonders, and figns, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves alfo know:

23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counfel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and flain;

24 Whom God hath raifed up, having

booked the pains of death: because it was not

poffible that he should be holden of it.

25 For David fpeaketh concerning him, I forefaw the Lord always before my face; for he is on my right hand, that I fhould not be

26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover alfo, my fieth fhall reft in hope:

27 Because thou wilt not leave my foul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to fee corruption.

28 Thou haft made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

29 Men and brethren, let me freely fpeak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his fepulchre is with us unto this day.

30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had fworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Chrift to fit on his

throne :

31 He feeing this before fpake of the refur reation of Chrift, that his foul was not left in hell, neither his fleth did fee corruption.

32 This Jefus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promife of the Holy Ghoft, he hath thed forth this, which ye now fee and hear.

34 For David is not afcended into the heavens: but he faith himfelf, The Lord fat unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footftool."
