GENESIS. 21 And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt, even to the other end thereot. 22 Only the land of the priests bought he not: for the priests had a portion aligned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore they fold not their lands. 23 Then Jofeph faid unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day, and your land, for Pharaoh: lo, here is feed for you, and ye thail tow the land. 24 And it shall come to pafs, in the increafe, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts thall be your own, for feed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your houtholds, and for food for your little ones. 25 And they faid, Thou hatt faved our lives: let us find grace in the fight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's fervants. 26 And Jofeph made it a law over the land of Egyptunto this day, that Pharaoh should have the nith part; except the land of the pric's only, which became not Pharaoh's. 27 And Ifrael dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Gothen; and they had poffe:ions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly. 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt feventeen years: fo the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and feven years. 29 And the time drew nigh that Ifrael muft die: and he called his fon Jofeph, and faid unto him, If now I have found grace in thy fight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt. 35 But I will lie with my fathers, and thou fhalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying-place. And he faid, I will do as thou haft faid. 31 And he faid, Swear unto me. And he fware unto him. And Ifrael bowed himfelf upon the bed's head. CHAP. XLVIII. 1 Jofeph vifits his fick father. 3 Jacob repeats the mife, 21 and prophefieth their return. AND it came to pass after these things, that one told jofeph, Behold, thy father is fick: and he took with him his two fons, Manaffeh and Ephraim. 2 And one told Jacob, and faid, Behold, thy fon Jofeph cometh unto thee: and Ifrael Atrengthened himfelf, and fat upon the bed. 3 And Jacob faid unto Jofeph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the 'and of Canaan, and bleffed me, 4 And faid unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy feed after thee for an everlasting poffeffion. 5 And now thy two fons, Ephraim and Manafeh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt, before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine: as Reuben and Simeon, they fhall be mine, 6 And thy iffue, which thou begetteft after them, thall be thine, and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inherit ance. 7 And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan, in the way, when yet there was but a little way Jacob bleeth bis fons. to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the fame is Beth-lehem. 8 And Ifrael beheld Jofeph's fons, and faid, Who are these? my fons, whom God hath given me in this 10 (Now the eyes of Ifrael were dim for age, fo that he could not fee.) And he brought them near unto him; and he kiffed them, and embraced them. thought to fee thy face; and, lo, God hath 11 And Ifrael faid unto Jofeph, I had not thewed me alfo thy feed. 12 And Jofeph brought them out from be tween his knees, and he bowed himself with his tace to the earth. 13 And Jofeph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Ifrael's left hand, and Manaifeh in his left hand toward Ifrael's right hand, and brought them near unto him. 14 And Ifrael ftretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who suas the younger, and his lett hand upon Manaffeh head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Ma naffeh was the first-born. 15 And he bleed Jofeph, and faid, God before whom my fathers Abraham and Ifaze did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, 16 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, blefs the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my ta thers Abraham and Ifaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. 17 And when Jofeph faw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it difpleafed him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manaich's head. 18 And Jofeph faid unto his fatner, Not fo, my father; for this is the first-born: put thy right hand upon his head. 19 And his father refufed, and faid, Iknow it, my fon, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he alfo fhall be great; but truly his younger brother thall be greater than he and his feed fhall become a multitude of nations. 20 And he bleffed them that day, faying, In thee shall Ifrael blefs, faying, God make thee as Fphraim and as Manaffeh. And he let Ephraim before Manafeh. die; but God fhall be with you, and bring 21 And Ifrael faid unto Jofeph, Behold! you again unto the land of your fathers. 22 Moreover, 1 have given to thee one por tion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand or the Amorite with my fword and with my bow. CHAP. XLIX. 1 Jacob calleth his fons to bless them: 3. their bleng in particular: 29 his charge concerning his burial: 33 his death. AND Jacob called unto his fons, and faily Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which thall betal you in the last days. ye fons of Jacob; and hearken unto Ifrael2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, your father. CHAP. L. 1 The mourning for Jacob. The funeral. 24 Jofeph prophefieth to his brethren their return; 26 be dieth. AND Jofeph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kiffed him. 2 And Jofeph commanded his fervants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Ifrael. 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; (for fo are fulfilled the days of thofe which are embalmed;) and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. 4 And when the days of his mourning were pait, Jofeph fpake unto the houfe of Pharaoh, faying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, fpeak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, faying, 5 My father made me fwear, faying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore, let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. 6 And Pharaoh faid, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee fwear. 7 And Jofeph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the fervants of Pharaoh, the elders of his houfe, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 And all the houfe of Jofeph, and his bre thren, and his father's houfe: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Gothen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horfemen; and it was a very great company. 10 And they came to the tarefhing-floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan; and there they mourned with a great and very fore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father feven days." II And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, faw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they faid, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the The children of Ifrael opprefed by a new king, down before his face; and they laid, Behold we be thy fervants. And Jofeph wept when they spake unto him. 18 And his brethren alfo went, and fell 19 And Jofeph faid unto them, Fear not; for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, ye thought evil againft me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pafs, as it is this day, to fave much people alive. 21 Now therefore, fear ye not: I will nou rith you, and your little ones. And he com forted them, and fpake kindly unto them. 22 And Jofeph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's houfe: and Jofeph lived an hundred and ten years. 23 And Jofeph faw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children alio of Machir, the fon of Manaffeh, were brought up upon Jofeph's knees. 24 And Jofeph faid unto his brethren, I die : and God will furely vifit you, and bring you out of this land, unto the land which he fware to Abraham, to Ifaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Jofeph took an oath of the chil dren of Ifrael, faying, God will furely vifit you, and ye mall carry up my bones from hence. 26 So Jofeph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. The Second Book of MOSES, called E XODUS. every man and his houshold came with Jacob. 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, And all the fouls that came out of the Joins of Jacob were feventy fouts; for Jofeph was in Egypt already. 6 And Jofeph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. And the children of Ifrael were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. 8 Now there arofe up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Jofeph. 9 And he faid unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Ifrael are more and mightier than we. 10 Come on, let us deal wifely with them, left they multiply and it come to país, that, when there falleth out any war, they join alfo unto our enemies, and fight against us, and fo get them up out of the land. 11 Therefore they did fet over them task. mafters, to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure-cities, Pithom and Raamfes. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Ifrael. hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of fervice in the field: all their fervice, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour. And the woman took the child, and nurfed it. 10 And the child grew, and the brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her fon. And the called his name Mofes: and the faid, Because I drew him out of the water. And it came to pafs in thofe days, when Moles was grown, that he went out tnto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he fpied an Egyptian fmiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and, when he faw that there was no man, he lew the Egyptian, and hid him in the fand. 13 And when he went out the fecond day, behold, two men of the Hebrews ftrove together: and he laid to him that did the wrong, Wherefore (miteit thou thy fellow? 14 And he faid, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us Intendeft thou to kill me as thou killedft the Egyptian? And Mofes feared, and faid, surely this thing is known. 15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he fought to lay Mofes. But Mofes fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he fat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had feven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses food up and helped them, and watered their flock. 18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he faid. How is it that ye are come fo foon to-day! 19 And they faid, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the thepherds, and alfo drew water enough for us, and watered the flock. 25 And he faid unto his daughters, And where is he? CHAP. III Mofes keepeth Jethro's flock: 2 God appear. eth unto him in a burning bufe: 9 he fend. eth him to deliver Ifrael. Now Mofes kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the back-fide of the defert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. a And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a name of fire out of the midst of a bufh: and he looked, and behold, the buth burned with fire, and the buth was not confumed. 3 And Mofes faid, I will now turn afide and fee this great fight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD faw that he turned afide to fee, God called unto him out of the midft of the bufh, and faid, Mofes, Mofes. And he faid, Here am I. 5 And he faid, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy fhoes from off thy feet; for the place whereon thou ftandeft is holy ground. 6 Moreover he faid, I am the God of thy fa ther, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob. And Mofes tid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD faid, I have furely feen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reafon of their taik-masters; for I know their forrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Ca naanites, and the Hittites, and the Amor. ites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebufites. 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Ifrael is come unto me and I have alfo feen the oppreffion wherewith the Egyptians oppreis them. 10 Come now, therefore, and I will fend thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayeit bring forth my people, the children of Ifrael, out of Egypt. 11 And Mofesfaid unto God, Who am I, that I fhould go unto Pharaoh, and that I thould bring forth the children of Ifrael out of Egypt?) 12 And he faid, Certainly I will be with thee: and this all be a token unto thee that have fent thee: When thou haft brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall ferve God upon this mountain. 13 And Mofes faid unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Ifrael, and hall fay unto them, The God of your fathers hath fent me unto you; and they mall fay to me, What is his name? what shall I fay un to them? 14 And God faid unto Mofes, I AM THAT I AM and he faid, Thus thalt thou fay unto the children of Ifrael, I AM hath fent me unto you. 15 And God faid moreover unto Mofes, Thus halt thou fay unto the children of If rael, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob, hath fent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. 16 Go and gather the elders of Ifrael together, and fay unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Ifaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have furely vifited you, and feen that which is done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have faid, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebuites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. 18 Anu they fhall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Ifrael, unto the king of Egypt, and ye thall fay unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us; and now let us go (we beseech thee) three days journey into the wilderness, that we may facrifice to the LORD our God. 19 And I am fure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand. zo And I will fretch out my hand, and fmite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midft thereof: and after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favour in the fight of the Egyptians and it fhall come to pafs, that when ye go, ye thall not go empty: 22 But every woman fhall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that fojourneth in her houfe, jewels of filver, and jewels of gold, and raiment and ye shall put them upon your fons, and upon your daughters; and ye hall fpoil the Fgyptians. CHAP. IV. 1 Mofes's rod is turned into a ferpent: 6 bis band is leprous.21 God's megage to Pharaoh. turned into a ferpent. fom; and, behold, it was turned again as hi other flesh. 8 And it fhall come to pafs, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the firft fign, that they will believe the voice of the latter fign. 9 And it thall come to pafs, if they will not believe alfo thefe two figns, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water, which thou takeft out of the river, fhall become blood upon the dry land. And Mofes faid unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither here tofore, nor fince thou haft fpoken unto thy fervant: but I am flow of fpeech, and of a flow tongue. 11 And the LORD faid unto him, Who hath made maa's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the feeing, or the blind? Have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore, go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou thalt fay. 13 And he faid, O my Lord, fend, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt fend. 14 And the anger of the LORD was kin dlei against Mofes, and he faid, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother! I know that he can fpeak well. And alfo, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee; and when he feeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt fpeak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he thall be thy fpokefman unto the people: and he thall be, even he thall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God. 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do figns. 18 And Motes went, and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and faid unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and fee whe ther they be yet alive. And Jethro faid to Mofes, Go in peace. 19 And the LORD faid unto Mofes in Mi AND Mofes antwerent, and faid, But, be- dian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men hold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will fay, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD faid unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he faid, A rod. 3 And he faid, Caft it on the ground. And he caft it on the ground, and it became a ferpent: and Mofes fled from before it. 4. And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand : 5 That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee. 6¶And the LORD faid furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bofom. And he put his hand into his bofom and, when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as inow. 7 And he faid, Put thine hand into thy bofom again. And he put his hand into his bofom again, and plucked it out of his bo are dead which fought thy life. 10 And Mofes took his wife, and his fons, and fet them upon an afs, and he returned to the land of Egypt.
