5 A broken spirit is

By God most highly priz'd; By him a broken contrite heart Shall never be despis'd.

PSALM LII-(N. V.)

The Judgment of God awaits the obstinate and impenitent Sinner.

1 WHY boastest thou, O lawless man,
Thy pow'r to work us ill,

Since God, the God in whom we trust,
Vouchsafes his favour still.

2 God shall for ever blast thy hopes,
Shall snatch thee soon away,
Root from the land of life thy name,
No longer here to stay.

3 The just, with thankful awe, shall see
The downfal of thy pride,
And at thy sudden ruin smile,

And all thy boasts deride.

4 Then shall our souls, with praise, O God, Extol thy wondrous love,

nd on thy name with patience wait;
Tor this thy saints approve.

PSALM LIII.

The Folly and Madness of Sinners.

1 FOOLS in their heart have madly said,
"There is no God above;"
Corrupt they thus his power defy,
Corrupt despise his love.

2 Great God! appear to their surprise,
Reveal thy dreadful name;
Let them no more thy wrath despise,
Nor turn our hope to shame.

3 Dost thou not dwell among the just?
Why then do fools deride,

That we should make thy name our trust,
And in thy love confide?

4 When thou from Sion's hill shalt send
Redemption's gladdning voice,
Then rescued Jacob shall be glad,
And Israel's sons rejoice.

PSALM LIV. (N. V.)

A Prayer for Assistance against our Enemies.

[ocr errors]

1 SAVE me, O Lord, by thy great name, And in thy strength appear;

Judge thou my cause, accept my prayer,

2 Take thou my part, and with my friends Be thou my surest guard;

And, God of truth! deal on my foes
Their falsehood's just reward.

3 Then, from distress and danger free,
I'll sacrifice with joy;
And ever in thy praise, O Lord,
My time and tongue employ.

PSALM LV.

Prayer the Believer's Confidence.

1 By morning light I'll seek his face,
At noon repeat my cry,

The night shall hear me ask his grace,
Nor will he long deny.

2 God shall preserve my soul from death,
Shall shield me when afraid ;
Ten thousand angels must appear,
If he command their aid.

3 I cast my burdens on the Lord,
The Lord sustains them all;
My courage rests upon his word,
That saints shall never fall.

4 My highest hopes shall not be vain,
My lips shall spread his praise;
While cruel and deceitful men
Scarce live out half their days.

PSALM LVI.-(N. V.)

THE SAME SUBJECT CONTINUED.

1 WHENE'ER, O God, I ask thy aid,
My foes shall be o'erthrown ;
For I am well assur'd that thou
My righteous cause wilt own.

2 I'll trust thy word, and so despise
The force that men can raise ;
To thee, O God, my vows are due;
To thee I'll render praise.

3 Thou hast retriev'd my soul from death, And thou wilt still secure

The life thou hast so oft preserv'd,
And make my footsteps sure.

4 That thus, protected by thy pow'r,
I may this light enjoy,

And in the service of my God

PSALM LVII.-(N. V.)

A Hymn of Thanksgiving for the Resurrection of Christ, and for the Glories and Blessings of Redemption.

1 O GOD, my heart is fix'd, 'tis bent,
Its thankful tribute to present;

And, with my heart, my voice I'll raise
To thee, my God, in songs of praise.

2 Be thou, O God, exalted high;

[ocr errors]

And as thy glory fills the sky,

So let it be on earth display'd,
Till thou art here, as there, obey'd.

3 Awake, my glory; harp and lute,
No longer let your strings be mute;
And I, my tuneful part to take,
Will with the early dawn awake.

4 Thy praises, Lord, I will resound
To all the list'ning nations round:
Thy mercy highest heav'n transcends,
Thy truth beyond the clouds extends.

5 Be thou, O God, exalted high;
And as thy glory fills the sky,
So let it be on earth display'd,
Till thou art here, as there, obey'd,
