And let thy right hand teach thee terrible

things.

5 Thine arrows are sharp,

The peoples fall under thee,

Sharp, in the heart of the King's enemies.

6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: A sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy

kingdom.

7 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated wickedness;

8

Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee
With the oil of joy above thy companions."

All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia :

Out of the ivory palaces," the stringed instruments make thee glad.

9 Kings' daughters are among thy precious

10

women:

Upon thy right hand standeth the Queen in gold of Ophir.

Hear, O daughter, and see, and incline

thine ear,

Forget also thine own people, and thy father's house;

a Heb. i. 8, 9.

b 1 Kings xxii. 39; Amos iii. 15.

11 So shall the King greatly desire thy

beauty;

For he is thy Lord, and worship thou him.

12 And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with presents;

13

The rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.a

The King's daughter is all glorious within the house,

Of gold thread is her clothing;

14 In variegated garments shall she be brought unto the King:

The virgins also that follow her,

Even her companions, shall be brought unto thee;

15 With gladness and joy shall they be brought, They shall come into the King's palace. 16 Instead of thy fathers shall be thy sons,

Whom thou shalt make princes in all the earth.

17 I will make thy name to be remembered throughout all generations;

Therefore shall the peoples give thee thanks for ever and ever.

PSALM XLVI.

For the chief Musician. For the sons of Korah. A Song with female voices.

1

GOD is our refuge and strength:

A help in troubles is he especially found.

2 Therefore will we not fear,

Though the earth should change,

And the mountains be moved into the midst

of the sea,

3 Though the waters thereof should make a noise and be troubled,

And the mountains shake at the raging

thereof.

Selah.

4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God,

The holy dwelling-place of the Most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved:

God shall help her when the morning appeareth."

6 The nations make a noise, the kingdoms are moved :

He hath uttered his voice; the earth melteth.

a Exod. xiv. 27.

7 Jehovah of hosts is with us;

8

9

The God of Jacob is our high tower. Selah.

[ocr errors]

Come, behold the works of Jehovah,

What desolations he hath caused in the earth ! He hath made wars to cease unto the end of the earth;

He hath broken the bow, and cut the spear

asunder;

He hath burned the chariots in the fire.

10 "Be still and know that I am God:

11

"I will be exalted among the nations, I will

be exalted in the earth."

Jehovah of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our high tower.
