9

I roar by reason of the disquietness of my

heart.

O my Lord, all my desire is before thee,
And my groaning is not hid from thee.

10 My heart panteth, my strength forsaketh

me;

As for the light of mine eyes, they also are gone from me.

11 My lovers and my companions stand aloof from my stroke,

And my neighbours stand afar off.

12 Those also that seek after my soul lay snares; And those that seek evil for me speak

wickedness,

And talk deceitful things all the day.

13 But as for me, as a deaf man, I hear not; And I am as a dumb man that openeth not

his mouth.

14 Yea, I am as a man that heareth not,

And in whose mouth are no rebukes;

For in thee, O Jehovah, do I hope :

It is thou that wilt answer, O my Lord, my
God.a

16 For I said, "Lest they should rejoice over

me:

a Ps. lxxxvi. 12.

"When my foot is moved, they magnify them

selves against me."

17 For I am ready to halt,

And my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For mine iniquity I declare ;

I am in fear on account of my sin.

19 And mine enemies are lively and mighty, And those that hate me without cause are

many.

20 Those also that requite evil for good

Are mine adversaries, because I pursue the thing that is good.

21 Forsake me not, O Jehovah :

O my God, be not far from me;

22 Make haste for my help, O my Lord, my salvation.

PSALM XXXIX.

For the chief Musician. For Jeduthun.* A Psalm by

1

David.

I SAID, "I will take heed to my ways, “That I sin not with my tongue :

"I will keep my mouth with a bridle,

"While the wicked one is before me."

2 I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, even from good:

Then was my sorrow stirred.

3 My heart became hot within me :
In my meditation a fire was kindled ;-
I spake with my tongue.

4

O Jehovah, make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is,

That I may know how frail I am.

5 Behold, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth,

And my life is as nothing before thee.

Surely, every man at his best state is alto

gether vanity.

6 Surely, man walketh in a vain show:

7

Surely, they are disquieted in vain ;

Selah.

He heapeth up riches and knoweth not who shall gather them.

And now, O my Lord, what wait I for?
My hope is in thee.

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions:

Make me not the reproach of the fool.

9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because it was thou that didst it.

10 Remove thy stroke from me :

As for me, I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.

11 When thou with rebukes dost chasten man

for iniquity,

[blocks in formation]

And a sojourner, like all my fathers. 13 Look away from me that I may get comfort, Before I go hence, and be no more.a

PSALM XL.

For the chief Musician. A Psalm by David.

1

I WAITED patiently for Jehovah,

And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry,

2 And brought me up from the horrible pit, from the miry clay,

And set my feet upon a rock, and established

my steps,

3 And put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.

Many shall see it, and fear, and trust in
Jehovah.

a Job x. 20, 21.

trust,

And regardeth not the proud, nor those that

turn aside to lies.

Thou hast greatly multiplied, O thou Jehovah, my God,

Thy wonderful works and thy devices on our behalf; there is no setting of them forth before thee;

If I would show them forth and speak of them, they are more than can be counted.

Sacrifice and meat-offering thou didst not delight in;

Ears didst thou form for me:

Burnt-offering and sin-offering thou didst not ask.

7 Then said I, "Lo, I am come,

"In the roll of the book it is written of me,8"I delight to do thy will, O my God;* "Yea, thy law is within my heart.

9 "I have published righteousness in the great

assembly.

Lo, I have not restrained my lips; "Thou, O Jehovah, knowest it.

a Heb. x. 5-7.
