"Let the false lips be dumb,

"That speak hard things against the righteous

one,

"In pride and contempt."

O how great is thy goodness which thou hast laid up for those that fear thee, Which thou hast wrought for those that take

refuge in thee, before the children of men! 20 Thou wilt hide them in the secret place of thy presence from the conspiracies of men : Thou wilt hide them in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be Jehovah, for he hath showed me wonderful loving-kindness in a strong

city.

22 As for me, I said, as I hasted away, "I am cut off from before thine eyes;"

23

But verily thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.a

O love Jehovah, all ye his godly ones;
For Jehovah preserveth the faithful,

And abundantly requiteth the proud doer.

24 Be of good courage, and let your heart be

strong,

All ye that hope in Jehovah.

a Lam. iii. 54-56.

PSALM XXXII.

A didactic Poem by David.

1 BLESSED is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered."

2 Blessed is the man unto whom Jehovah will

3

not impute iniquity,

And in whose spirit there is no deceit.

When I kept silence, my bones wasted away Through my roaring all the day;

C

4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon

me;

My moisture was turned into the drought of

summer.

Selah.

5 I made known my sin unto thee, and mine

iniquity I did not cover:

I said, "I will confess my transgressions unto
Jehovah;"

And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.

Selah.

6 For this, shall every godly one pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: Surely, in the overflowing of many waters," they shall not reach him.

a Ps. lxxxv. 2.

b Rom. iv. 6-8.

Hos. vii. 14.

d Isa. xxviii. 2, 15, 17, 18.

[blocks in formation]

8 I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the

way which thou shalt

go:

I will set mine eye upon thee.*

9

Be ye not as the horse,

Or as the mule, which do not understand,

Whose mouth must be held with bit and bridle,

Else, they will not draw near unto thee. 10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked one; But as to him that trusteth in Jehovah, loving-kindness shall compass him about. Be glad in Jehovah, and rejoice, ye righteous, And shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

PSALM XXXIII.

1 SHOUT for joy in Jehovah, O ye righteous: Praise is comely for the upright.

2 Give thanks unto Jehovah with the harp; Sing praises to him with the ten stringed lyre;

a Ps. xxxiii. 18; xxxiv. 15.

3 Sing unto him a new song ;*

Play skilfully with a joyful sound. 4 For the word of Jehovah is right;

And all his works are done in faithfulness. 5 He loveth righteousness and judgment:" The earth is full of the loving-kindness of Jehovah..

7

By the word of Jehovah were the heavens made,

And all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathere) the waters of the sea together

as a heap;

He laid up the depths in storehouses.

8 Let all the earth fear Jehovah,

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in

awe of him;

9 For he spake and it was done,

He commanded and it stood fast.

10 Jehovah maketh void the counsel of the

nations:

He maketh the devices of the peoples of none

effect.

11 The counsel of Jehovah standeth for ever, The devices of his heart to all generations.

a Ps. cxliv. 9.

b Jer. ix. 24.

c Ps. cxix. 64.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is Jehovah, And the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance.

13

Jehovah looketh down from heaven;

He seeth all the children of men:

14 From the place of his dwelling he looketh Upon all the inhabitants of the earth,

15 He that alone formed their heart,

That understandeth all their works.

16 There is no king saved by the abundance of his might;

A mighty man is not delivered by the abund

ance of his strength:

17 A horse is a vain thing for safety,

Neither shall he deliver any by the abundance of his might,

18 Behold, the

eye

fear him,

of Jehovah is upon those that

Upon those that hope in his loving-kindness,"

19 To deliver their soul from death,

20

And to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul waiteth for Jehovah :
He is our help and our shield.
