7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt keep me alive :

Thou wilt put forth thine hand against the anger of mine enemies,

And thy right hand shall save me.

8 Jehovah will perform all things for me;" Thy loving-kindness, O Jehovah, endureth for

ever:

Forsake not the works of thine own hands.

PSALM CXXXIX.

For the chief Musician. A Psalm by David.

O JEHOVAH, thou searchest me, and knowest me.

2 Thou knowest my sitting down, and my rising

up;

Thou understandest my thought afar off.

3 Thou compassest my path, and my lying down,

And art acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word on my tongue,

But, lo, O Jehovah, thou knowest it altogether.

5 Thou besettest me behind and before,

6

And layest thy hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain unto it.

a Ps. lvii. 2.

7 Whither can I go

from thy Spirit ?

Or whither can I flee from thy presence?

8 If I ascend up into the heavens, thou art there; If I make my bed in hades, behold, thou art

there.

9 If I take the wings of the dawn,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,b 10 Even there shall thy hand guide me,

11

And thy right hand shall take hold of me.
If I should say, "Surely the darkness shall

cover me,

"And the light about me shall be night,”

12 Even the darkness cannot make dark to thee, But the night giveth light as the day,

The darkness is as the light.

13 For it is thou that hast formed my reins; Thou didst cover me in my mother's belly. 14 I will give thee thanks, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made:

Wonderful are thy works;

And that my soul knoweth right well.

15 My body was not hid from thee,

When I was made in secret,

And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of

the earth.c

a Ps. vi. 5 (note).

b That is, the extreme west.

c Ps. lxiii. 9; Eph. iv. 9.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being

17

imperfect;

And in thy book were all my members written, Which in continuance were formed, when as yet there was none of them.

How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God!

How mighty is the sum of them!

18 If I would count them, they are more in

19

number than the sand.

I awake, and I am still with thee.

Surely thou wilt slay the wicked one, O God; Depart from me, therefore, ye men of blood. 20 For they speak* of thee wickedly,

And thine adversaries take thy name in vain. 21 Do I not hate those, O Jehovah, that hate thee ?

And am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred :

23

I count them mine enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my thoughts;

24 And see if there be any idolatrous way in

And guide me in the way everlasting.

PSALM CXL.

For the chief Musician. A Psalm by David.

DELIVER me, O Jehovah, from the evil

man,

Preserve me from the man of violence,

2 Who devise evil in their heart.

Every day they gather themselves together for war.

3 They sharpen their tongue like a serpent; Adder's poison is under their lips.

4

Selah.

Keep me, O Jehovah, from the hands of

the wicked one,

Preserve me from the man of violence,

Who devise to overthrow my steps.

5 The proud hide a trap for me, and cords; They spread a net by the side of the path; They set snares for me.

6

Selah.

I have said to Jehovah," Thou art my God: "Give ear, O Jehovah, to the voice of my supplications."

a Rom. iii. 13.

7 O Jehovah, my Lord, the strength of my sal

vation,

Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

8 Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked one:

Further not his wicked device, lest they exalt

themselves.

Selah.

9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them ;

10 Let burning coals be cast upon them;

Let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, whence they cannot rise again.

11 Let not the slanderer be established in the earth.

As to the man of violence, let evil hunt him

to his overthrow.a

12- I know that Jehovah will maintain

The cause of the afflicted one, and the judgment of the needy.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name:

The upright shall dwell in thy presence.

a Ps. xxxiv. 21.
