Nor taketh upa reproach against his neighbour 4 In whose eyes a reprobate is despised,

But he honoureth those that fear Jehovah; He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not,

PSALM XVI.

с

A Golden Poem by David.

KEEP me, O God, for in thee do I take refuge.

2 I* have said unto Jehovah," Thou art my Lord;

"Thou art my happiness: I have nothing besides thee."

3 As to the saints that are in the earth,

And the excellent, in them is all my delight. 4 Their sorrows shall be increased that hasten after another god:

Their drink-offerings of blood will I not pour

out,

Nor take

up their names upon my lips.

Jehovah is the allotment of my portion and

my cup:

Thou maintainest my lot.

6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places : Yea, I have a goodly inheritance.

7 I bless Jehovah, who giveth me counsel: Yea, by night my reins instruct me.

8 I set Jehovah continually before me :

Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth :

Yea, my flesh shall dwell safely.

PSALM XVII.

A Prayer by David.

HEAR righteousness, O Jehovah; attend unto my cry:

Give ear to my prayer, that goeth not out of deceitful lips.

2 Let my judgment go forth from before thee; Let thine eyes behold equity.

3

Thou hast tried my heart; thou hast visited

me in the night;

Thou hast tried me, and found no evil thought

in me;

Neither hath my mouth transgressed.

As for the doings of men, by the word of thy lips,

I have marked the paths of the destroyer; 5 By maintaining my goings in thy paths, My steps have not been moved.

6

As for me, I call upon thee, because thou answerest me, O God.

Incline thine ear unto me; hear my word. 7 Show thy wonderful loving-kindnesses, O thou that savest by thy right hand

Those that take refuge in thee from those that rise up against them.

8 Keep me as the pupil of the eye,

9

Hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
From the wicked that oppress me,
From

my deadly enemies that surround me.

10 They have shut up their fat heart :

With their mouth they speak in pride. 11 Now have they compassed us* about in our goings:

They set their eyes bowing down to the earth. 12 He resembleth a lion that longeth to tear, And a young lion sitting in secret places. 13 Rise up, O Jehovah, meet him, cast him down : Deliver my soul from the wicked one, by thy

sword,

14 From men, by thy hand, O Jehovah,

15

From men of the world, who have their portion in this life,

And whose belly thou fillest with thy trea

sures:

They are satisfied with children,

And leave their abundance to their babes.

As for me, in righteousness I shall behold

thy countenance;

On awaking, I shall be satisfied with thy likeness.a

PSALM XVIII.a

For the chief Musician. By David, the servant of Jehovah, who spake unto Jehovah the words of this Song in the day that Jehovah delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: and he said,

1

I LOVE thee, O Jehovah, my strength ;— 2 Jehovah,-my rock, and my fortress, and my

deliverer,

My God, my rock wherein I take refuge,

My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

3 I call upon Jehovah, who is worthy to be praised,

4

So am I saved from mine enemies.

The sorrows of death compassed me,

And the floods of wickedness made me afraid : 5 The sorrows of hades compassed me about,

b

The snares of death encountered me.

6 In my trouble I called upon Jehovah, And cried unto my God:

He heard my voice from his temple,

And my cry came before him, even into his ears.

a 2 Sam. xxii.
