8 Every morning will I destroy all the wicked of the land,

That I may cut off from the city of Jehovah all the workers of iniquity."

PSALM CII.

A Prayer by the afflicted one when he was overwhelmed, and poured out his complaint before Jehovah.

1

HEAR my prayer, O Jehovah,

And let my cry come unto thee.

2 Hide not thy face from me.

In the day of my trouble, incline thine ear

unto me:

In the day that I call, answer me speedily. 3 For my days are consumed like* smoke, And my bones are dried up like fire-wood; 4 My heart is smitten and withered like grass, For I have forgotten to eat my bread.

5 By reason of the voice of my groaning, my bones cleave to my flesh.

6 I am like the pelican of the wilderness, I am like the owl of desolate places,

7 I watch, and am like a sparrow alone upon the house-top.

All the day mine enemies reproach me;

a Jer. xxi. 12; Zeph. iii. 5.

b Ps. cxxv. 5.

And those that are mad against me curse by

me.

9 For I have eaten ashes like bread,

And mingled my drink with weeping,

10 Because of thine indignation and thin anger;

For thou hast lifted me up and cast me down.

11 My days are like a shadow that declineth, And I am withered like grass;

12 But thou, O Jehovah, shalt endure for ever, And thy name, to all generations.a

13 Thou wilt rise up, and have pity on Zion; For the time to be gracious unto her, yea, the

set time shall come;

14 For thy servants shall take pleasure in her stones,

And favour the dust thereof.

15 And the nations shall fear the name of Je

hovah,

And all the kings of the earth thy glory;

16 Because Jehovah shall build Zion,

17

18

He shall appear in his glory,

He shall regard the prayer of the destitute,
And not despise their prayer.

This is written for a generation to come,

a Ps. cxxxv. 13.

And a people that shall be created shall praise

Jah;

19 Because he shall look down from his holy

height,

From heaven shall Jehovah behold the earth, 20 To hear the sighing of the prisoner,

To set free those that are appointed to die, 21 To declare the name of Jehovah in Zion, And his praise in Jerusalem,

22 When the peoples are gathered together, And the kingdoms, to serve Jehovah.

23

He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.a

24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days:

25

Thy years are throughout all generations.

"Of old hast thou founded the earth,

"And the heavens are the work of thy hands: 26 "They shall perish; but thou shalt remain. 'Yea, all of them shall grow old like a gar

ment,

'As a vesture shalt thou change them, and

they shall be changed;

"But thou art the same,

a Ps. lxxxix. 45.

"And thy years shall have no end.*

28 "The children of thy servants shall dwell

there,

66 And their seed shall be established before

thee."

PSALM CIII.

By David.

BLESS Jehovah, O my soul;

And all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless Jehovah, O my soul,

And forget not all his benefits;

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life" from destruction; Who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and

tender mercies;

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things,
So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

• Ps. xix. 14 (note).
d Lam. iii. 58.

For all that are oppressed.

7 He made known his ways

unto Moses,

His deeds unto the children of Israel.

8 Jehovah is merciful and gracious,

Slow to anger, and great in loving-kindness."

9 He will not alway contend,

Neither will he keep his anger for ever."

10 He hath not dealt with us according to our sins,

Nor recompensed us according to our ini

quities;

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is his loving-kindness to those that

fear him.

12 As far as the east is from the west,

So far hath he put our transgressions from us.

13 Like as a father pitieth his children,

So Jehovah pitieth those that fear him;

14 For he knoweth our frame,

He remembereth that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are as grass;

As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth; 16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone, And the place thereof knoweth it no more.
